Baron De Coubertin inspires the first modern Games
The first of the modern Olympic Games was staged in Athens, Greece, although financial difficulties almost saw it staged in Budapest, Hungary. Initially it was intended that Paris would host the first Olympics in 1900, but Athens was chosen four years earlier, though Greece ran into financial difficulties before the Games could begin. With Hungary preparing for its millennium celebrations, Budapest repeatedly offered to step in as a replacement but the Crown Prince Constantine of Greece set up an organising committee and the donations began to flood in. Just over 200 men, representing 14 countries competed in a total of 43 events. The majority of the participants were from the host nation with tennis, track and field, fencing, weightlifting, cycling, wrestling, shooting, swimming and gymnastics all contested. Cricket and soccer tournaments were cancelled due to a lack of participating teams while rowing and sailing competitions fell victim to poor weather. Event winners received a silver medal, a certificate and a crown of olive leaves. Runners-up were given bronze medals and a crown of laurel while third placed participants went home empty handed.

But no one should mistake Daiane dos Santos's apparent physical slightness for frailty. When asked what it would mean to win the Olympic gold in floor exercise for which she is heavily favored, the little gymnast does not define what it would mean. She defines what it will mean.

In fact, gymnastics can be likened to an art form. Gymnastics events test the strength, rhythm, balance, flexibility and agility of the gymnast. The history of gymnastics has seen many a popular gymnast who has mesmerized the world with awesome performances. History of Gymnastics
Gymnastics in its present form can be traced to Sweden. The history of gymnastics shows that Germany and Czechoslovakia developed gymnastics apparatus around the 1800s. Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, a German educator was known as the Father of gymnastics. He used pieces of stationery apparatus to inculcate and develop self-discipline and strength of body. The Swedish method on the other hand, developed by Pehr Henrik Ling, concentrated on rhythm and coordination with the use of hoops, clubs and small balls. It was just a matter of time before gymnastics became an extremely popular sport in Europe. The history of gymnastics at a competitive level can be traced to the 1896 Olympics in Athens. The Gymnastics World Championships has its history in the 1903 international event held in Antwerp.

History from 1968 to the present ... Donna Strauss (when asked how it all began…) The Parkette program has come a long way since its humble beginnings in the early 1960's. Bill and Donna Strauss formed the group that was to become one of the most famous and recognized gymnastics programs in the USA Gymnastics history. It was with great pride that the Strausses selected the name Parkettes when identifying their new team. It was to honor the man that inspired them to pursue their dreams of building a gymnastics program in the Lehigh Valley. Little did they realize, as they started helping young people develop their athletic abilities, that in less than two decades they would achieve a ranking of #1 Team in the United States and be voted by their peers. . . coaches of the Year in 1983,1994 and 1998. The road to success was not an easy one. The sport of gymnastics has increased dramatically in popularity since the founding of the Parkettes. As gymnastics grew, so did the Strausses means to provide a quality program to their students. In their formative years, the Parkettes practiced in places such as a barn with no heat, a dimly lit basement of a church, the Strauss's own backyard (during the summer), and the second and third floors of Symphony Hall in Allentown's downtown area!
