Trailblazers. Pioneers. Leaders. Breaking down barriers of race and gender, these 10 black female sports figures redefined the role of women in sports and laid the foundation for future generations. In honor of Black History Month, we celebrate their groundbreaking achievements and honor their contributions. Alice Coachman - Pioneer for black female athletes in all sports
Growing up in the segregated South during the 1920s and '30s, Alice Coachman was denied access to public facilities and forced to run barefoot in the streets. With the little opportunity she was given, Coachman took it and ran with it - literally. Overcoming racial segregation, Coachman went on to win 25 AAU track titles and numerous national championships at Tuskegee Institute, mostly in the long jump. However, her greatest achievement came in 1948 in London when she became the first black woman to win an Olympic gold medal. By breaking the race barrier for women, Coachman opened the door for the future black female track stars, including some of the greats, like Wilma Rudolph, Florence Griffith Joyner and Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Dominique Dawes - Three-time Olympic medalist
As a young girl, Women's Sports Foundation President Dominique Dawes spent hours at the gym in order to achieve her dream of winning an Olympic medal. Her hard work paid off - big time. In 1988, she became the first African-American on the U.S. national gymnastics team, and in 1992, the first on the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team. In 1996, Dawes reached another milestone, winning an individual bronze medal in the floor exercises - the first black to earn an individual Olympic medal in women's gymnastics. She earned an Olympic gold medal the same year, as the U.S. women's gymnastics team won the team event in Atlanta. In a career of firsts, Dawes inspired a generation and set the stage for today's black gymnasts.

Gymnastics judges suspended but results stand ATHENS, AUG. 21. The International Gymnastics Federation suspended three judges on Saturday for a mistake they made in scoring the men's all-around final, but said results would not be changed and Paul Hamm of the United States would keep his gold medal. The error in Wednesday's all-around cost bronze medallist Yang Tae-young of South Korea a tenth of a point that would have given him the gold. Yang received a start value of 9.9 on his parallel bars routine, a tenth lower than he received for the same set in team qualifying and finals. After reviewing a tape of the all-around, FIG officials determined he should have been awarded a start value of 10. He scored a 9.712 on the event. With the extra .1, he would have finished with 57.874 points and defeated Hamm by .051

Three judges hit with suspensions
August 22, 2004 ATHENS The International Gymnastics Federation suspended three judges for making a scoring error in the men's all-around competition, won by Paul Hamm Wednesday, but the action will not change the final results. ADVERTISEMENT Hamm became the first US man to win the all-around title in the closest finish in Olympic history, beating South Korea's Kim Dae Eun by .012 points. South Korea's Yang Tae Young won the bronze, and it was the scoring of his routine on the parallel bars that drew a protest by the South Korean Olympic Committee. At issue was the start value given to Yang's exercise. He received a score of 9.712, but could have received a score one-10th of a point higher, which would have been enough to give him the gold. In each event, gymnasts are given a start value based on the difficulty of their routine. The judges then deduct any mistakes. But unlike diving, for example, when each dive has a certain degree of difficulty and is fixed, the start value in gymnastics is slightly more fluid. A routine may have a 10.0 start value if it is completed fully, but if one element is left out, the start value is reduced and the judging and deductions start from there. When a gymnast's score is announced after his routine, the start value is shown. No objection was raised at the time by the South Koreans, who moved on to the next event, the high bar. Under international gymnastics rules, a score can be changed only if the protest is lodged and found legitimate before the athletes proceed to the next event.

It's anything but a routine gold for Patterson
August 20, 2004 ATHENS That was then and this is now. That was there and this is here. So which is a bigger moment? Mary Lou Retton's "No-Fault Vault" that produced America's first Olympic all-around gold medal in women's gymnastics 20 years ago in Los Angeles? Or Carly Patterson's "Dream Beam" here last night that clinched the second? ADVERTISEMENT "In 1984, the Russians were not there," said US team coordinator Martha Karolyi, after Patterson, the 16-year-old native of Baton Rouge, La., had come out of fourth place midway through the evening to outpoint the Russians, Chinese, Romanians, Ukrainians, and anybody else who pulled on a leotard. "So I think this is even more precious a result." Patterson was not only the first American to win the all-around gold against a full field, she was also the first to do it at an overseas Games. And she did it just one night after teammate Paul Hamm made history by becoming the first US men's champion in Olympic history. "You dream about this your whole life, about winning the gold medal," said Patterson, after she'd busted Russian world champion Svetlana Khorkina on balance beam (9.725) and floor exercise (9.712) to win by a comfortable margin, 38.387 to 38.211, with China's Zhang Nan in third with 38.049. "It's just amazing."

GYMNASTICS REPORT Tuesday, September 19 Make-up masks mental anguish
From Simon Barnes in Sydney She is the most graceful athlete I have ever seen, with the possible exception of Dubai Millennium. She is the diva of the gymnasium, and has always believed that you tumble for show and you pout for dough. But because of a small matter of fractions of millimetres and seconds, she is quite inconsolable. She is Svetlana Khorkina, and she loves the limelight. Some of these Olympic performers who come out of the shadows every four years do so with an air of embarrassment, blushing and shuffling on to their appointed stages, but not Russia's Khorkina. She struts as if all these Olympic Games were designed entirely to please her. The Games is an occasion that has been created so that she can rise to it. It is hard to be a diva when you appear before your public only every four years, but at least for an Olympic gymnast you know that the audience can be measured in billions. "I want to be recognised," she once said, "from half a mile away." We all looked, we all recognised, for she is indeed unmistakable. But Khorkina, more than anything else, is a sportswoman. Defeat and disaster affect her every bit as much as they do Vinnie Jones. And there she was on her best apparatus, the uneven bars. The women’s team event was expected to be a straight slugging match between Russia and Romania, and Khorkina was expected to lead Russia to the gold medal.
