Judges will never get a perfect 10 because they have brains. Things that should not matter do matter. Order of competition is another variable that plays a role. John Scheer, a professor at the University of Nebraska, found that a gymnast that is the fourth competitor on a team has a significant scoring advantage over the gymnast that is the first competitor. Scheer managed the 1973 Big Eight Gymnastics Meet, creating two different version of the meet with the first and fourth competitor switched. The order effect in scoring was seen in nationally certified judges. And with these changes, perhaps judges will be a little closer to that elusive 10.

Potted History Some early history about women and the Olympics
  • Married women were barred from the Ancient Olympic Games, but prostitutes or virgins were allowed to spectate. Kallipateria was the first female Olympic boxing coach in 440 BC. The first female Olympic champion was a Spartan princess called Kynisca, in 392 BC. She was also the first woman to become a champion horse trainer when her horses and chariot competed and won in the Ancient Olympic Games. Women had their own athletic games of Hera from about 1000 BC. Women were originally the prizes in mens Ancient Olympic chariot races. Ballooning, croquet and golf (1900) were once Olympic events in which women competed. Please see Statistics for more information. 1900 was the year the World Exhibition was scheduled to take place in Paris, with celebrations and events akin to our own Millennium celebrations. The Olympic Games were taking place at the same time, from 14th May to 28th October and were considered by many to be part of the World Exhibition. Some of the competitors did not know if they were in the Olympic Games or the World Fair. Happily for the women athletes of the time, the all male International Olympic Committee, who were very against women taking parts in sports, had little influence in Paris.
The organisers of the World Exhibition seemed unconcerned about the rights and wrongs of women competing, so their presence was not an issue. To this day there is still confusion as to which events were Olympic and which were World Fair events. So, who were the first female Olympic competitors and champion? For a sport to be Olympic in 1900 it had to be an open sport, amateur and international, not handicapped and not motorised. The long-held view was that women took part in just

On the ontological level (relationship of the subject to the universe, to the self and others) we will extol the identity of mind and body. On the aesthetic level we will delve into all the diverse manifestations of the body aesthetic, deriving from the relationships between body and movement, body and space, and body and time. Gymnastics will be the Archimedean focal point of the celebrations: "where beauty overcomes power".

Bela again in gymnastics spotlight
By Nancy Armour
Associated Press
SYDNEY, Australia Among the magnets, pictures and other knickknacks in Bela Karolyi's kitchen is a little board that reads, "Everybody is entitled to my opinion." Bela Karolyi knows his Americans have to improve from their qualifying-round performance. It's supposed to be funny, not carry some deep, hidden meaning. But it's so fitting for the man who has single-handedly shaped U.S. gymnastics for two decades. With his booming voice, a way with words that can only be described as "Bela-speak" and a knack for drawing the spotlight to him like a magnet, he's become almost bigger than the sport. "He has the record and you know it," said Kerri Strug, one of Karolyi's nine Olympic gold medalists. "He's trained so many Olympians, so many world champions. What he does works." The biggest test of his career could come Tuesday in the women's team finals. With Karolyi watching from the stands during the preliminaries, the U.S. women looked uninspired, barely making it to the finals. To have any chance at a medal, Karolyi must work some of his greatest magic and find a way to give the women the fire they so desperately need. There are some whispers he may even come back to the floor for the finals.

MILWAUKEE Morgan and Paul Hamm will be the first twin gymnasts to compete in the Olympics for the United States when they take part in the Sydney Games. And the 17-year-old fraternal twins from Waukesha, Wis., don't anticipate any sibling rivalry. While Paul Hamm, right, qualified for Sydney, Morgan was named as an at-large selection. "Our main goal is for the team. Everyone wants a team medal," Morgan Hamm said Monday in a telephone interview with The Associated Press from training camp in San Diego. "I really don't think they are thinking, 'I am trying to beat my brother on this event,'" said Stacy Maloney, their coach of 10 years. "It's more like those two versus everyone else." Their selection already has made U.S. Olympic history. There were gymnast brothers who competed in the 1956 Olympics but never twins, said Courtney Caress, communications manager for USA Gymnastics. The twins' mother, Cecily Hamm, said they were especially supportive of each other at the Boston Olympic trials that ended Aug. 19.

GYMNASTICS: Standing tall Americans rally late to capture first medal since '84 Olympics
August 17, 2004 BY JEMELE HILL
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER ATHENS, Greece Twenty years of mostly lows, of being virtually ignored, came to a glorious end Monday. The men finally outshone the women in the Olympics. The U.S. men's gymnastics team ended its 20-year medal drought with a gutsy, silver-medal performance at the Olympic Indoor Hall. It was the men's first team medal since winning gold at the boycotted 1984 Los Angeles Games. "Our mantra was 'One team, one dream,' " said U.S. coach Kevin Mazeika. "That dream was to stand on the medal podium in 2004. I'm very proud of these guys for making that dream come true." For years, the men's team has dwelled in anonymity compared to the women's team. The women might well win another medal today quite possibly a gold but the U.S. men made history and shed their obscurity with a come-from-behind performance. "If this doesn't open up eyes," Brett McClure said, "nothing will."

American athletes have swam, scored and vaulted to victory in many events at the XXVIII Summer Olympic Games this week in Athens. Jeffrey Brown discusses the Americans' surprise success in gymnastics with former U.S. Olympic gymnast and coach Muriel Grossfeld and the overall progress of the games with Sports Illustrated writer Brian Cazeneuve.
JEFFREY BROWN: First, some stunning victories in gymnastics. Last night, it was 16-year old Carly Patterson, who won the women's all-around competition, the first time a U.S. woman has won gold in the sport's premier event since Mary Lou Retton in 1984. Women gymnasts perform in four events. Patterson moved into first place with her routine on the beam, and then held on for victory with a floor exercise that featured perfect tumbling passes and landings. A day earlier, Paul Hamm pulled out an unlikely gold medal victory, falling badly in his vault, but coming back for a win by the smallest of margins. Hamm is the first American man to win gold in the men's individual all-around competition.
And joining me now is Muriel Grossfeld.

Origin of Artistic Gymnastics
Gymnastics is one of the oldest Olympic sports, and was first practised at the ancient Olympic Games when the competitors performed a variety of events that could loosely be termed "gymnastics". These included wrestling and vaulting over bulls, according to illustrations seen on ancient clay pots. In fact, the name "gymnastics" is derived from the ancient Greek word "gumnos" which literally translated means naked. Because of this, women were excluded from the ancient Games, not just as competitors but also as spectators ! The sport in its modern form first evolved during the 19th century, when two styles of gymnastics were in conflict : the Swedish system (mainly freestyle group exercises) and the German system (using apparatus). Large open air gymnasiums began to appear in Europe during the 19th century, resembling adventure playgrounds where gentlemen could impress their lady friends with a spot of rope-climbing. It was regarded as a great form of discipline by the army, and many military terms still exist today, such as "marching on" ans "saluting the judges". The international governing body for gymnastics, the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) was founded in 1881. There are currently 125 federations affiliated to the FIG (International Federation – June 2001).

Brief History of the Olympic Games
Ancient Olympic Games Chronology of athletic events added to the Olympic Games Myths and the Olympic Games Pelops myth ... Athens for Olympic Games of 2004
Ancient Olympic Games The Olympic Games begun at Olympia in Greece in 776 BC. The Greek calendar was based on the Olympiad, the four-year period between games. The games were staged in the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis. Here the Greeks erected statues and built temples in a grove dedicated to Zeus, supreme among the gods. The greatest shrine was an ivory and gold statue of Zeus. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Scholars have speculated that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but rather the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. The Eleans traced the founding of the Olympic games to their King Iphitos, who was told by the Delphi Oracle to plant the olive tree from which the victors' wreaths were made. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, at first the only Olympic event was a 200-yard dash, called a stadium. This was the only event until 724 BC, when a two-stadia race was added. Two years later the 24-stadia event began, and in 708 the pentathlon was added and wrestling became part of the games. This pentathlon, a five-event match consisted of running, wrestling, leaping, throwing the discus, and hurling the javelin. In time boxing, a chariot race, and other events were included.
