    The word gymnastics comes from the Greek word gymnos , meaning naked, and referring to the dress code (or lack thereof) of the athletes back in ancient Greece.
    In , Russia's Olga Korbut helped take our minds off the horrors going on in Munich and in Vietnam. In , Romania's Nadia Comaneci recorded the first perfect score in Olympic gymnastics history, then proceeded to record six more for good measure. In , American Mary Lou Retton dazzled us with her smile and spunk, and in , it was the "Magnificent Seven" and Kerri Strug's gutsy vault that ensured the gold for the United States. Larissa Latynina of Russia won 18 Olympic gymnastic medals, thus setting an Olympics record for women: nine gold medals, five silver, and four bronze between 1956 and 1964. Marcia Frederick was the first American woman to win the World Gymnastics Championship. She won in 1978 on the uneven bars. Olga Korbut of the Soviet Union inspired thousands of girls to take up gymnastics after she won two gold medals and one silver medal in the 1972 Olympics. She was later named Female Athlete of the Year. In the 1976 Olympics, Nadia Comaneci of Romania became the first gymnast in Olympic history to score a perfect 10.0. She did this on the uneven bars. She went on to record six more perfect scores during those Olympics. In 1984, 16-year-old

The pommel horse is one of six apparatus in artistic gymnastics Gymnastics is among the oldest Olympic sports, dating back to ancient times as well as the first modern Games in 1896.
The term "gymnastics" derives from the Greek word "gymnos", meaning naked, and the sport in its modern form evolved during the 19th century. Two styles of gymnastics were in conflict - the Swedish and German systems - with German Frederick-Ludwig Khan introducing parallel bars and the horizontal bar to what had been a floor-based event. Academy: Beth Tweddle's guides to all the apparatus These days, gymnastics as an Olympic sport is split into three disciplines; artistic, rhythmic and trampoline. The Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (Fig) was founded in 1881, and men's artistic gymnastics was included for the first time in the 1896 Olympic Games, with women joining in 1928.

    The stadium at the 1896 Athens Games, the first of the modern Olympics. The Olympic Games are the creation of the Ancient Greeks with records of the first competition dating back to 776 BC. The Games reigned supreme in Ancient Greece for 12 centuries until in 393 AD Emperor Theodosius founded them to be a pagan celebration and thus ended the competition. It wasn't until the late 1800's that Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin began researching and rallying support for the rebirth of the Olympic Games. His hard work succeeded and in 1896 Athens was the host city of the first of the modern Olympic Games.
    1896 Athens, Greece
    Thirteen countries participated at the 1896 Athens Games with around 300 athletes taking part in the competition. There were 43 events contested which fell into the following categories;
    athletics (track and field), cycling, fencing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling.

    ATHENS - Following the medals draught of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, USA Gymnastics officials convened the greatest minds in the sport to develop a long-range plan geared toward producing not only medals in Athens, but depth of all programs across the board. Under the new, truly American training system, U.S. gymnasts were back on the medal podium within one year. Within three years, U.S. gymnasts had accumulated more World Championships medals - a total of 15 - than in any previous three-Worlds stretch in history. The apex came at the 2003 World Championships in Anaheim, Calif., when the U.S. women captured the nation’s first-ever team gold medal, and Paul Hamm became the first-ever men’s all-around world champion for the United States. Thus, when the Athens Olympic Games rolled around in 2004, U.S.

    Through the Olympic Years
    The Olympics is like no other competition, offering some of the greatest moments of unscripted drama. We have documented here some of the outstanding achievements, with an emphasis on the progress of American gymnastics. Rather than provide a boring history lesson, we hope that you will see a great deal of FUN within these pages! For instance, did you know that...
    • gymnastics competitions used to be held outdoors?
    • the gymnasts would usually bring their own apparatus to compete on?
    • until 1960, anyone could try out for the U.S. Olympic team in gymnastics; you merely had to show up at the Trials competition to enter!
    My, how things have changed!

    The modern Olympic Games belong to our era. The way they are organized, their ceremonies and symbolism reflect modern reality, not ancient tradition. The Games are not only about the athletes. The Games are not just a question of records and numbers. Hidden behind the statistics, the medals, the records are important ideas, experiences, questions about participation and exclusion, rivalry and competition, victory and defeat, commitment and exertion, the athletic ideal and commercialization. The Games concern everyone participating in them, in whatever way. They have to do with individuals and social groups, cities and countries. They speak of symbols, heroes and myths.
    The 19th-Century Olympic Movement
    Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the man who inspired the revival of the Olympic Games Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a Frenchman, is justly given credit for establishing the modern Olympics, but it was England that revived the idea, and it was in England that Coubertin was introduced to it. As early as 1612, Robert Dover established an English version of the Olympic Games in the Cotswold Hills in Gloucestershire. Events included card games, chess, and dancing, as well as running, jumping, the hammer throw, pitching the bar, wrestling, and horse racing.
