Gymnastics 1: Ancient Gymnastics
Gymnastics, in the form of acrobatics, calisthenics, and disciplined exercise, has been around since ancient times. Acrobats entertained Egyptian nobility about 7,000 years ago and, judging by ancient frescoes, acrobats vaulted over the backs of bulls on the island of Crete when the Minoan civilization flourished, beginning about 2,700 BC. The name of the sport comes from gymnos , the Greek word for naked. In ancient Greece, male athletes trained and competed in the nude. The gymnasium, originally an area for physical training, came to be a school for training both the mind and the body. There were three types of teachers in a gymnasium: Grammatistes, who taught the three Rs; Kitharistes, who taught music; and paidotribes, who were physical fitness teachers. Physical training took place in the palestra, a square, walled, open-air area equipped with changing rooms and baths. Activities included running, jumping, weightlifting, throwing, wrestling, and swimming, all classified as gymnastics. Evidently, most exercises were conducted to music, as in the floor exercise of modern artistic gymnastics. Among the ancient Greeks, gymnastics probably reached a peak in Sparta. With their emphasis on the military, the Spartans prized exercises that could improve not only physical fitness but also discipline. In Athens and most other city-states, only boys received a formal education and took part in gymnastics. But Sparta required that both sexes be physically fit. Women needed strong bodies so they could bear strong, healthy children.

http://www.times-olympics.co.uk/communities/gym/gymhistory.html
OLYMPIC HISTORY Gymnastics has been an Olympic sport from ancient times and from the start of the modern Games in 1896. Until 1924, when gymnastics settled into a format not unlike the one we know today for artistic gymnasts, the sport also featured rope climbing, tumbling, club swinging, pole vault and even swimming among its disciplines. At Paris in 1924, men competed in individual and team events on each gym apparatus. The women followed in Amsterdam in 1928. Since then, the dominant force has been the Soviet Union, while the former Soviet bloc countries posed the biggest threat. China, too, with its diminutive talent and aptitude for harsh regimes of discipline, is a force to be reckoned with in gymnastic pursuits, though its dominance on the diving boards is not replicated so rigidly in the gymnasium. Two of the most famous gymnasts in history are both Russian. Larysa Latynina remains the most medalled Olympian in history, with 18 medals between 1956 and 1964, including nine gold, five silver and four bronze. Olga Korbut, the diminutive star of the 1972 Games stole more hearts than she won gold medals but her love affair with the media was one of the highlights of the Munich Games.

The History
Camberwell Gymnastics Club started as Russ Gym Kids by Russell Haynes in 1993. It ran one day a week on a Friday for anyone who wanted to learn gymnastics. I was coaching at Rotherhithe gym club and also coaching at Crystal Palace when I was asked to run a session on behalf of Southwark council at Camberwell Leisure Centre. The first class started with just 5 kids. Over the next few months the class grew and another day was added. Today with a name change we have around 250 kids and adults a week who uses Camberwell Gymnastics Club and we are now open every day. We have six different classes and have produced regional champions. One of our goals is to have our own gym and produced a national squad gymnast. Camberwell Gymnastics club employ 9 coaches and 10 volunteers, with classes running throughout the day and projects with schools and other clubs, workshops and coaching courses, Camberwell Gymnastics Club has become a full time working club. The aim of the club is to provide gymnastics for all. To advance the knowledge of gymnastics to all who attend the classes and to better their skills because of coming to the club. We accept gymnasts of all abilities and backgrounds and will not exclude anyone willing to learn gymnastics.

In fact, gymnastics can be likened to an art form. Gymnastics events test the strength, rhythm, balance, flexibility and agility of the gymnast. The history of gymnastics has seen many a popular gymnast who has mesmerized the world with awesome performances. History of Gymnastics
Gymnastics in its present form can be traced to Sweden. The history of gymnastics shows that Germany and Czechoslovakia developed gymnastics apparatus around the 1800s. Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, a German educator was known as the Father of gymnastics. He used pieces of stationery apparatus to inculcate and develop self-discipline and strength of body. The Swedish method on the other hand, developed by Pehr Henrik Ling, concentrated on rhythm and coordination with the use of hoops, clubs and small balls. It was just a matter of time before gymnastics became an extremely popular sport in Europe. The history of gymnastics at a competitive level can be traced to the 1896 Olympics in Athens. The Gymnastics World Championships has its history in the 1903 international event held in Antwerp.

    History
The roots of Artistic Gymnastics can be traced back to antiquity, as can be seen in representative works of art from Minoan Crete. These representations include, among other exercises, “kivistima'” and “tavrokathapsia”. “Kivistima” was a kind of acrobatic exercise: young men called “kivistires”, dressed in brightly coloured clothes, performed acrobatics, sometimes with swords. Later on, “kivistima” developed into “tavrokatharpsia”: in this event, athletes grabbed a bull’s horns as it ran, performing an arc in the air with their body, standing on the back of the bull and eventually landing on the ground. From the era of the “kivistires” until today, Artistic Gymnastics has developed into one of the most popular disciplines. The history of modern Artistic Gymnastics is closely linked to Germans GutsMuths and Frederick-Ludwig Jahn, who in the 18th century re-discovered this discipline and developed it. The invention of parallel bars and the horizontal bar is attributed to Frederick-Ludwig Khan, who also created the German Gymnastics system, which, contrary to Swedish Gymnastics that was popular at that time, required the use of apparatus.
