You might say that Cicely Warrington fell in love with gymnastics while window-shopping. The New Jersey native was just 5 or 6 years old when she nearly flipped for something she saw in a store window. Getting used to the full credit load on top of a rigorous practice schedule took Warrington some time. At Brookdale, she only had one or two days of class at a time.

Gymnastics Team Sets Goal for Games Gymnast-turned-coach Gao Jian, director of the State Sports General Administration of China (SSGAC) Gymnastics Management Center, recently talked with China.org.cn about the 2004 Summer Olympics goals and prospects of the national gymnastics team, and how the sport has changed over the years.
China.org.cn: What are the goals of the gymnastics team at the Athens Games, and who are China's big rivals?
Gao Jian: We expect the national team to win two or three gold medals among the 14 events. China is most competitive in seven events: men's team combined and individual all-around exercises, parallel bars, vault, pommel horse and women's uneven bars and balance beam. The Chinese team acquitted itself pretty well at last year's world championships, winning the most medals with a total of eight five gold, two silver and one bronze. The situation won't change a lot at the Athens Games. For the men's team, the United States and Japan still are the most threatening, while the women face their greatest challenges from Romania, Russia and the United States.
C: China drew an excellent lot for the performing order at the Olympics. The men's team is in the last group match in the evening and the women will compete in the third match. Do you think China is very lucky?

CLEVELAND, OH-After qualifying for the NCAA South Central Regional Championships last season, Northern Illinois University gymnast Kristina Campos (Gladstone, MO) hopes to avoid the dreaded "sophomore jinx" in 2003. The Huskie standout took more than a first step in that direction; rather, a giant leap as Campos opened her sophomore campaign by picking up the Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Week honor Monday (Jan. 13), as announced by league commissioner Rick Chryst.
Campos won two event championships plus the all-around title in NIU's season-opening victory over Winona State University on Sunday (Jan. 12). The Gladstone, MO, native claimed the balance beam crown with a 9.725 performance and proceeded to earn a 9.875 for her floor exercise routine. Campos-who also finished second to teammate Lisanna Goldschen (St. Joseph, MN / Apollo) on the uneven bars at 9.700-finished with an all-around total of 38.925, more than a full point better than her nearest competitor.
Campos already owns two of the 11 scores of 39.000 or better in Northern Illinois gymnastics history. Her effort Sunday helped produce the best season-opening score ever by the Huskie program.

Gymnastics - History
Gymnastics is one of the world's oldest sports and can be traced back thousands of years. In 2000 BC, the men and women of Ancient Greece developed the sport of bull jumping, which is similar to the vaulting exercises you see today in modern gymnastics. In bull jumping, the athlete would run towards a charging bull , grab its horns and either vault onto the bull's back or vault over the bull in a somersault and land on his or her feet on the other side of the bull! This early event required both courage and strength , as well as grace and style. The Ancient Romans used gymnastics as part of their military training to improve the strength, balance and flexibility of soldiers. In the 1800s, gymnastics exercises using rings, bars, balls and mats were developed by gymnasts in Germany and Sweden. Gymnastics have been a part of the modern Olympic Games , since they were first held in 1896. Rhythmic gymnastics, which combines gymnastics and dance, and makes use of

The pommel horse is one of six apparatus in artistic gymnastics Gymnastics is among the oldest Olympic sports, dating back to ancient times as well as the first modern Games in 1896.
The term "gymnastics" derives from the Greek word "gymnos", meaning naked, and the sport in its modern form evolved during the 19th century. Two styles of gymnastics were in conflict - the Swedish and German systems - with German Frederick-Ludwig Khan introducing parallel bars and the horizontal bar to what had been a floor-based event. Academy: Beth Tweddle's guides to all the apparatus These days, gymnastics as an Olympic sport is split into three disciplines; artistic, rhythmic and trampoline. The Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (Fig) was founded in 1881, and men's artistic gymnastics was included for the first time in the 1896 Olympic Games, with women joining in 1928.

Gymnast launches court bid
American gymnast Paul Hamm has been allowed to keep his Olympic gold medal.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected an appeal from South Korea's Yang Tae-young that he should be awarded the gold. The South Korean was mistakenly docked 0.1 points in his parallel bars routine - had he been given the correct score he would have beaten Hamm. Hamm was the first American man to win the gymnastics' all-round title at the Olympic Games. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) had ruled that bronze medallist Yang should have been awarded the gold but refused to redistribute the medals because the South Koreans did not protest until after the event. However, the three judges involved in the controversy were suspended by the federation.

Artistic Gymnastics
Gymnastics has existed for more than 2,000 years, but its development as a competitive sport began just little more than 100 years ago. During the 1800's, mass and individual exhibitions were conducted by various athletic and school clubs, as well as ethnic organizations, like the Turnvereins and Sokols. Although slow to catch on in the schools, gymnastics did flourish in the Turnvereins and Sokols. It was introduced to the U.S. and its school systems in the 1830's by such immigrants as Charles Beck, Charles Follen and Francis Lieber. The Bureau of the European Gymnastics Federation, which would evolve into the International Gymnastics Federation, was formed in 1881 opening the way for international competition. In the United States, the Amateur Athletic Union assumed control of gymnastics, along with most other amateur sports, in 1883. Prior to this time gymnastics championships were held by various clubs and organizations. The first large-scale meeting of gymnasts was the 1896 Olympics, where Germany virtually swept the medal parade. Gymnasts from five countries competed in events which included men's horizontal bar, parallel bars, pommel horse, rings and vault.

History
There are many people in the history of gymnastics. Here are a few people and what they did... Larissa Latynina L arissa won 18 medals at the Olympics. She won nine gold, five silver, and four bronze. The amount she won at the Olympics is a record for any sport. Larissa was a member of the Soviet Team. In 1957 at the European Championships she won all five individual events. She placed first in the floor exercise, uneven bars, balance beam, vault, and all-around. After her retirement she began coaching for the Soviet Teams and helped plan the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics. Peter Vidmar P eter was born in 1961. In 1984 at the Olympics in Los Angeles, California, Peter served as captain of the men's U.S. Team. At the games the team won the gold medal. This victory was the first team competition medal won since 1932. Vidmar went to college at The University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). In 1980 and 1982 he won the United States National Title in the all-around, and in 1983 and 1984 he won the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Title in the all-around. Vidmar was put in the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1991. Nadia Comenaci N adia was born on November 12, 1961 in Onesti, Romania. Nadia was a favorite of fans and the press at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. There she won three gold medals and a bronze medal in an individual competition, and a silver medal for the Romanian team's second-place finish. Because Nadia was born in Onesti, she was noticed by the Romanian coach Bela Karolyi. In 1970 she won the national junior title and many other titles until she began senior competition in 1975. In 1975 she entered the European championships winning the all-around title and three individual events.
