Even Paul Hamm's coach figured it was over: "I thought he had no odds." A fall on his vault landing sent Hamm stumbling into the judges' table and all the way down to 12th place in the all-around gymnastics final. "I thought, `That's it. I'm done,"' he said. Far from it. In one of the most amazing comebacks in Olympic history, Hamm performed the two most spectacular routines of his career Wednesday to win the gold medal by the closest margin ever in the event. "I'm happy right now. Shocked, actually," said Hamm, the first American man to win the Olympic all-around. "To be in first place after that kind of mistake, I thought there was no chance to win."

Allana Slater is Australia 's highest ranking gymnast . She was born April 3 in Perth Western Australia . She suffered from a condition called sleep apnea in her early years. Allana was hooked up to a machine that monitored her breathing and heart rate Her early years in gymnastics saw her train at Kalajos School of Gymnastics but it was not long before the talent scouts from the Western Australia Institute of Sport (WAIS) spotted the then 5 year old Allana and invited her to join their elite development program. She began training in the WAIS program just after her 6th birthday. Allana made her national competition debut at the age of 9 and her international debut at 11. 1998 stands out as a breakthrough year for Allana, at a dual meet against Japan while still a junior, she emerged as the all around champion recording her first major international victory over her more experienced and senior teammates as well as the best gymnasts from Japan . A good performance at the World Youth Games followed and soon after a third place finish at the Australian Commonwealth Games team trial. Allana soon found herself standing with her teammates on the podium in

    History of Rhythmic Gymnastics
Rhythmic gymnastics combines ballet and creative movements to music, while working with ribbons, balls, hoops, ropes and clubs in a choreographed dance-and-tumble routine. It has a lot more dance than artistic gymnastics. Everything is done on the floor with far different routines and different music. There are two kinds of gymnastics: rhythmic gymnastics and artistic gymnastics. The kind of gymnastics most of us are familiar with is artistic gymnastics. Women's artistic gymnastics includes uneven bars, balance beam, vault and floor exercise. The kind of gymnastics I am going to talk about is rhythmic gymnastics which includes ball, hoop, ribbon, rope, clubs and sometimes floor exercise ( I will go into these in more detail later). Gymnastics, rhythmic and artistic combined, started in Europe during the eighteenth century as one sport and over time gradually developed into two different yet similar sports. Rhythmic gymnastics started as an independent competitive sport in the early nineteen fifties by the Russians. Then in nineteen sixty three the first rhythmic gymnastics world championship was held in Europe. Even though rhythmic gymnastics has its own world championships it did not become an Olympic medal sport until nineteen eighty four. This is partly why rhythmics is such a little known and hardly recognized sport in the U.S.

How the king of gymnastics music got shut out of Athens.
    By Dan Kois
Posted Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at 1:01 PM PT
Patterson: She won without Nease's magic touch Do you remember what song accompanied Mohini Bhardwaj's floor routine Monday night? Of course not, says Barry Nease —this year's crop of floor exercise tunes was repetitive, dreary, and downright dull. Since 1979, when fully orchestrated music was first allowed in gymnastics floor routines, Nease has been the undisputed king of floor-exercise music. But this year, the man responsible for some of the most inspired song selections in Olympic gymnastics history—Dominique Moceanu's "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" and Kim Zmeskal's "Hooked on Swing," for example—has been shut out of the Olympics. While seven athletes at this year's U.S. Olympic Trials used Nease's tunes, none ended up making the team. Nease, in a phone interview from a McDonald's on South Padre Island, Texas, where he's on vacation, says he's extremely disappointed with the low-grade tunes he's heard the last two weeks. He claims that most of it was mixed by coaches, not professionals, and "is not entertaining, not charming, [and] has no impact." Before 1979, most nations' gymnastics federations had piano players on staff. Then Nease came along and changed the sport forever. He describes the floor-exercise sound engineer's main task as creating a constant stream of "big moments" for the routine's choreographer to work with. Some coaches approach Nease with a specific song in mind; others have nothing more than a feeling they would like to capture. Once he decides which song fits the bill, Nease completely rerecords it, synthesizing as many as 140 different instruments and trimming to between 60 and 90 seconds. "You could say I do a great service to the composer," he says, "because I remove all his redundancies."

The University of New Hampshire is one of those programs. That's why, in 2002,the 'Cats once again expect "All Eyes on Us." In 2001, the 'Cats proved they are truly "A Class Act." UNH recorded new team highs in all four events and recorded the third highest team score in UNH history with a 195.275. The year end record was a strong 16-3-1 and in post season the team placed fourth at the EAGL Championships and advanced to the Northeast Regional, where they finished fourth in one of the most difficult regional meets in the country. UNH was topped by the Big Ten Champions - U of Michigan (third in the Nation), the Pacific Ten Champions - Stanford(eighth in the Nation), and a strong LSU team. The regional meet score of 194.225 was the highest regional mark in UNH history and was strong enough to end the season with a ranking of twenty-second in the Nation. Suzanne Poretz was named EAGL Gymnast of the Year and advanced to the NCAA Championship as an individual qualifier in the all-around.
