About North Harbour Gymnastics
Brief History
North Harbour Gymnastics Centre (Inc.) is the product of nearly 40 years of gymnastics development on the North Shore. In 1987 the Centre was established as an amalgamation of the North Shore Gymnastics Club, East Coast Bays Gymnastics Club, Birkenhead Gymnastics Club and North Shore YMCA Rhythmic Gymnastics Club. The Centre was able to operate from one venue (apart from rhythmic) in 1990 when vacant commercial premises were obtained in Kaimahi Place, Wairau Valley. In 1991 a move was made to Cherry Lane off Porana Road. The final move was made in August 1992 when the North Shore City Council completed the new stadium known as the North Shore Events Centre and Gymnastics Centre . Since 1992 the Centre has grown from strength to strength. It is the largest gymnastics club in the Auckland area and is the almost exclusive provider of gymnastics services on the North Shore. The Centre is run by a board , assisted by parent support committees for both rhythmic and artistic and full time coaching staff who look after the Men's and Women's competitive

History The History of the Panthers Gymnastics Club
In 1966, the Panthers started in the Norwood-St.Boniface area of Winnipeg under the guidance of Mrs.Ingrid Pichette. There were 17 members. They used gymnasiums and equipment provided by the St.Boniface-St.Vital Parks Board. At that time they were named the Purple Panthers.
By 1979, the club had grown and it became obvious that to develop further, they needed a permanent facility. Warehouse space was found, rented and transformed into a gymnasium.
In 1980, a contest was held to find a logo for the club. Debbie McDowell won the contest. Her drawing consisted of a paw print formed of 4 filled circles. The four circles represent the four events in artistic gymnastics. The large circle represents the floor and the other 3 smaller ones the bars, the beam and finally the vault.
The Panther parent organization raised funds to purchase the necessary equipment for this new facility. With this much needed change, Panthers were able to develop and produce many top gymnasts including 1988 Olympian, Lynette Wittmeier and 7 other High Performance athletes.
December of 1990 saw a great stepping stone in the history of the Panthers and gymnastics in Manitoba. The club purchased its own building - an 11,000 sq.ft. facility - our current facility!

TRI STAR GYMNASTIC CLUB HISTORY
Tri Star Gymnastic Club was formed in 1988 and has its origins in three Central Auckland gymnastic clubs that were established in the 1950's: St Mary’s, Mt Roskill and Onehunga Gymnastic Clubs.
Part of the current gymsport complex was the American Services gym built during the Second World War and initially located in Cornwall Park.
In 1965, the American Services gym building was moved to its current site, having been donated by the Mayor, Mr Keith Hay.
The facility was known as the Mt Roskill Gym and Youth Centre, and was used for gymnastics, weight lifting, judo, Maori cultural groups and community house classes.
In late 1985, a proposal was put to Auckland City to construct a new building, sited adjacent to the existing gym. The facility was completed in 1987, and the three independent clubs merged to become Tri Star Gymnastic Club Inc. in March 1988. The new club was granted a land lease covering both buildings for 66 years.
The demand for mat based sports and recreational space in both buildings now exceeds their capacity, and fundraising is currently in progress to build a new Regional Gymsport Centre on the existing site at Keith Hay Park, Mt Roskill, by demolishing the old American Services gym and building a new and larger facility in its place.

Origin of Artistic Gymnastics
Gymnastics is one of the oldest Olympic sports, and was first practised at the ancient Olympic Games when the competitors performed a variety of events that could loosely be termed "gymnastics". These included wrestling and vaulting over bulls, according to illustrations seen on ancient clay pots. In fact, the name "gymnastics" is derived from the ancient Greek word "gumnos" which literally translated means naked. Because of this, women were excluded from the ancient Games, not just as competitors but also as spectators ! The sport in its modern form first evolved during the 19th century, when two styles of gymnastics were in conflict : the Swedish system (mainly freestyle group exercises) and the German system (using apparatus). Large open air gymnasiums began to appear in Europe during the 19th century, resembling adventure playgrounds where gentlemen could impress their lady friends with a spot of rope-climbing. It was regarded as a great form of discipline by the army, and many military terms still exist today, such as "marching on" ans "saluting the judges". The international governing body for gymnastics, the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) was founded in 1881. There are currently 125 federations affiliated to the FIG (International Federation – June 2001).

ANAHEIM - Nadia Comaneci's Perfect 10 at the 1976 American Cup at Madison Square Garden has been selected as the most memorable "Longines Perfect 10 Moment In Time" in USA Gymnastics history during an on-line campaign that registered more than 316,000 votes. Comaneci's Perfect 10 moment narrowly edged 1984 Olympic Champion Mary Lou Retton's five-medal performance by 2,699 votes, or less than one percent. "Nadia Comaneci revolutionized gymnastics in the United States by demonstrating that powerful tumbling and a graceful presence could be achieved by younger women," said USA Gymnastics President Bob Colarossi. "Certainly Nadia, Mary Lou, Kurt Thomas and all the nominees deserve recognition for their contributions to the growth of our sport in the United States." Comaneci's Perfect 10 - the first of seven in her career - garnered 63,692 votes. Retton's five medals during the 1984 Olympic Games finished a close second with 60,993 votes. Third place finish went to Cathy Rigby's 1970 silver medal, the first world championships medal for the U.S. women, with a final total of 38,903 votes. The 1996 Magnificent Seven finished fourth at 34,691.

Congratulations to all of the competitors at the Rhythmic National Championships and especially to our Senior and Junior National Champions, Natalie Lacuesta and Heilie Isaacs. It was an excellent competition at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Six groups entered this Championships with the group from AIRGC named as Senior Champions and Illinois Rhythmics group named as Junior Champions. Earlier this spring, the group from Rhythmflex Gymnastics, coached by Catherine Yakhimovich, was awarded the right at the Trials to represent the United States at the Group World Gymnastics Championships in Seville, Spain. This was the first time the United States has sent a club-based group to a World Championships. The group did a very nice job representing us and really showed how far we are coming with the development of group rhythmic gymnastics in our country. The Men's National Team spent a week training at China's National Training Institute in Beijing. This was the first time any foreign team has been permitted to train at this Center. The friendship we have developed with the Chinese Gymnastics Association through the International Team Championships and the Visa American Cup helped to secure this prestigious invitation for the Team. The men gained a lot from training with the World Champions, ate scorpions and had a thoroughly wonderful time with their Chinese hosts! Thanks to all the clubs and gymnasts who, over the years, have helped host the Chinese teams in the United States.

Chinese Teenager Tames Ivankov to Make World Gymnastics History
Teenager Feng Jing made history in becoming the youngest ever men's all-around world champion on Thursday when he struck a surprise gold for China.
The 16-year-old pushed two-time world champion and favourite Ivan Ivankov of Belarus into second with the bronze going to Jordan Jovtchev of Bulgaria
In a tight contest Feng, the youngest member of the Chinese team, was the most consistent performer, scoring a combined 56.211 points, with Ivankov just behind on 56.124 and Jovtchev, bronze medallist in 1999, on 56.085. "My name is Feng Jing and I come from China," joked the youngster to those who rushed to find out more on this unknown gymnast. The newcomer, who is the Chinese youth champion, was called up following the decision of the country's top stars to stay home for the national championships. But the newly-crowned champion said that decision was part of a strategy by China - the five-time world and Olympic team champions - to build a strong team of up-and-coming world-beaters.

Gymnastics: History and Value - A Perspective
Gymnastics, as an activity, has been around for more than
two thousand years in one form or another, from the ancient
Greek Olympics, to Roman ceremony, to today’s modern meets.
As an organized and truly competitive sport, gymnastics
has existed for a little more than a century. It was
introduced in the mid 1800s to the United States, where it
inexorably gained in popularity within school systems.
Amateur associations gathered together by the late nineteenth century, offering classes and opportunities for young people to join in on the fun. Eventually, these associations began to have their own championships. In 1896, at the first international Olympic games in Athens
