WORLDGUIDE Introduction See Image Gallery Transport Money Essential Info RELATED Thorn Tree Forum Postcards Travel Links Dutch and British colonisation made an indelible mark on Guyana, leaving behind a now dilapidated colonial capital, a volatile mix of peoples and a curious political geography. The country's natural attractions, however, are impressive, unspoiled and on a scale that dwarfs human endeavour. Dangerous Situation in Georgetown and New Amsterdam Home invasions, carjackings, kidnappings and shootings are on the increase in Guyana, particularly in Georgetown and New Amsterdam. If driving, lock all your doors. The East Coast Demerara is also a high-risk area, particularly Buxton, Friendship and Annadale, as are the East Bank regions and the highway from Timerhi to Linden. Veins of social and political unrest run through Guyana, and Georgetown is a magnet for sporadic, low-level violence. Although it's rarely directed at foreigners, visitors are advised to avoid walking alone after dark, maintain alertness at all times and keep out of Georgetown's Tiger Bay and Stabroek Market areas and all of the city's south.

Guyana: Overview Guyana
"At the point where the Caribbean meets South America on its North Atlantic seaboard lies an almost unknown, but incredibly wonderful land of unspoilt beauty, where the virgin rainforest leads to the Amazon Basin. Where the jungle is still unexplored, rivers uncharted and mountains yet to be climbed."
Guyana is situated on the north- eastern coast of the continent of South America between l degree and 9 degrees north latitude, and 57 degrees and 61 degrees west longitude. It is bounded on the north by the Atlantic Ocean, on the east by Suriname, on the south and southwest by Brazil, and on the northwest by Venezuela. Its coastline stretches for some 270 miles and it extends inland for about 450 miles. About 35 percent of the country, the area approximately below 4 degrees north latitude, lies within the Amazon Basin. Guyana Standard Time is four hours behind Greenwich Mean Time and one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time. (GMT-4). The area of Guyana is 83,000 square miles (215,000 square kilometers), which is slightly larger than the state of Idaho or slightly smaller than the United Kingdom, excluding Northern Ireland.

Guyana River

Get a taste of what awaits you in print from this compelling excerpt.

The expedition began in earnest at Rockstone, a tiny outpost hacked out of the rain forest on the Essequibo River. As we approached the landing on a jungle-lined dirt road, scattering clouds of yellow and chartreuse butterflies, we saw a group of more than a dozen women and children, dressed in long skirts and colorful blouses. They piled into an old wooden boat and, eight dugout canoes in tow, headed upstream, where they would spend two days catching piranha, catfish, arawana, and angelfish for the international aquarium trade. The next morning our team of eight (six Americans, an Englishman, and a Guyanese) got into a small motorboat and explored a canal off the Essequibo. Thick white clouds drifted across the sky, occasionally blocking a sun so hot that the mere act of sitting induced a shirt-soaking sweat. Red and green kingfishers shot in front of our wooden boat. Iridescent hummingbirds hovered over the cove. As we drifted into a fetid lagoon clogged with dead trees, a snake skittered across the water. Armbruster pronounced conditions perfect. He was the first over the side.
