The country is aptly named because if its profusion of rivers, creeks, and other bodies of water. It is located in the northern part of the Amazon Basin of South America, so it is quite understandable that there should be many waterways to the Atlantic Ocean. The three main rivers are, from west to east, the Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice Rivers. Guyana, formerly British Guiana, is the only English speaking country in South America, and its neighbors are Venezuela, Brazil, and Suriname (formerly Dutch Guiana) to the west, south and east respectively. Although on the South American continent, Guyana is part of the West Indies and is regarded as the only Caribbean country the rest of the West Indies/Caribbean are island states. At 83,000 sq. miles (215,000 sq.km.) Guyana is about the size of the United Kingdom, and is the largest country in the West Indies.

Culture knows no boundaries. Music is one of those elements of our civilisation, which, once it has been planted, continues to flourish, and thereafter must be regarded as an integral connection of the way of life of a community. With the spirit of Mashramani firmly entrenched, revellers will fete to the popular sounds of the calypso, soca and the steel band.
Origins
The steel band today is known to be capable of playing a wide range of music, sweeping people off their feet with its tropical rhythm. It originated in Trinidad, where the pan was born out of the necessity to form musical instruments to assist in the celebrations in Port-of-Spain that followed the end of the First World War. It is reported that the people went wild grabbing all the old dustbins, parts of discarded motorcars and other metal material to make a noisy din as they celebrated in the streets of Port of Spain. The unusual but distinctive sounds symbolised the birth of a new musical instrument, which swept the West Indies.
To play the fine compositions of music, bins or drums are cut horizontally in half. They are then scraped and heated. Those to be used for the lighter type of music, called the first and second pans to dispense melody and timing, are heated for about four to five minutes and then chilled in water and prepared for the grooving process.

- Support Extension of Initiative to Debts owed to IDB
(GINA) Commonwealth Finance Ministers, at their meeting in Barbados, where Guyana was represented by Finance Minister Saisnarine Kowlessar, voiced strong support for the Gleneagles proposals made recently by G8 leaders to further reduce the debt burden of Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC).
These proposals aim to write off 100 percent of the debts owed by countries which have attained HIPC completion point to the IMF, IDA (the concessional arm of the World Bank) and the African Development Fund (the concessional arm of the African Development Bank).
Widespread support was also expressed at the Commonwealth meeting for calls made by Guyana for the G8 initiative to be extended to include debts owed by HIPC countries, such as Guyana, to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

MUSLIMS IN GUYANA
by Raymond Chickrie
rchickrie@hotmail.com
SUMMARY
Updated September 9th. 2001 "Muslims in Guyana: History, Traditions, and Conflict and Change " is a modest attempt to begin recording the history and traditions of Guyanese Muslims. To this day, nothing has ever been published on this subject. This paper traces the origins of the Muslims, their cultural heritage and their "Indo-Iranian" practices that came under scrutiny after "Arabization" or the orthodox movement, which began in the seventies. "Muslims in Guyana: History, Traditions, Conflicts and Change " brings to light aspects of the "Indo-Iranian" traditions that are controversial and have often divided the Muslims into two camps the "Indo-Iranian" and the "Arab." Opponents of "Indo-Iranian" traditions such as Milad-un-Nabi (Melaad-Sharief), Tazim, and the singing of Qasida call these practices Bidah or Innovation. It is impossible to disconnect Guyanese Muslims from the Sub-Continent since it is their ancestral home. Hence," Muslims in Guyana: History, Traditions, Conflict and Change
