Acts of desperation intended, it's often said, to "send a message" from one raging side to another then roused to answering rage. In our Guyana some situations leap out at us, pleading for equal time and weight of understanding. Take the recent case of Parbattie Kamille Seenauth, 31, known as Paro, described in the press as "the shallow grave victim", her body found in a Georgetown backyard on February 15, 2002; and Pamela Alves, 41, also known as Patricia Grenville, the "shallow grave suspect", reputedly "a spiritual healer", in whose backyard the body was buried. It seems that months earlier Paro had left her home in Charity, Pomeroon "seeking a better life in the city". "Her body was discovered…after neighbors tipped off police that someone was seen burying a corpse in a shallow grave in the yard.

Diet
  • Guyanese food is distinctive and usually based on seafood or creole dishes like pepperpot, a spicy stew cooked in bitter cassava juice. Added to this are East Indian dishes such as curries and roti. Chinese food is also common. Peas, rice, and bread are staples in the diet.
Interesting Facts
  • It is the only country in South America where English is the official language. Guyana is notably famous for Kaieteur Falls, which is situated on the Potaro River, where that river falls off the Pakaraima Plateau. This is one of the highest waterfalls in the world, being nearly five times as high as the Niagara Falls in North America. The name Guyana is derived from an Amerindian word meaning "land of many waters".

Posted May 22nd. 2004 - Spanish translation below Ladies and Gentlemen, I am very delighted this morning to speak with you about the role of the Venezuelan Institute for Culture and Cooperation which currently operates in Georgetown, Guyana. It is interesting to note that even before this Institute was established by the Venezuelan Embassy, cooperation activities in the area of culture had already been on-going. This was because the Venezuelan Embassy in Georgetown from since the 1960s had already realized the significance of cultural links, and from time to time groups of cultural performers visited Guyana, much to the appreciation of the people of our country. As more and more Guyanese showed interest in learning about Venezuela - not only about the political and economic development - but also about the life style and the hopes and the aspirations of the Venezuelan people - the Venezuelan Government saw the need for the establishment of an institution to provide this information and to help Guyanese develop a full appreciation of the culture of their neighbours. Guyanese have long been interested in the political, economic and social development of Venezuela. It is interesting for you to know that some Guyanese actually participated in the fight for Venezuela's independence. You will recall that Bolivar's army also included many British and Irish mercenaries who were veterans of the Napoleonic wars. These British and Irish recruits occasionally used Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, as their staging post for organizing their supplies. From there, they arranged with Guyanese boat owners to transport them up the Orinoco River where they joined up with the army of
