SPECIAL REPORT War Tracker On the Scene Map U.S. Iraq ... Special Report WASHINGTON (CNN) Former CNN correspondents Bernard Shaw and Peter Arnett marked the 12th anniversary of the start of the Persian Gulf War by appearing Thursday on CNN and recalling their days as the only journalists along with the late John Holliman to provide live reports from Baghdad, Iraq, as war erupted. Known then as "the Boys of Baghdad," they shared their opinions with CNN's Wolf Blitzer on two other topics the possibility of a second war with Iraq and Pentagon plans to allow journalists to accompany military units in the field should they fight. SHAW: In war, one moment you're alive, the next moment you're dead, and I made my peace with the fact that at any moment I could die, and I just decided to focus on doing my job.

166. Brief Overview Of Persian Gulf War
Summary of events before during and after the war, from an Iraqi perspective. Described through various articles, pictures, audio and video samples.
http://www.geocities.com/iraqinfo/gulfwar/overview.html
Brief Overview of Persian Gulf War The 1991 Gulf War was hailed by many people, including those who prided themselves on their liberal outlook, as the first example of the New World Order made possible by the end of the Cold War. We were told that the international community, using the United Nattions as its founders intended, would defeat and probably overthrow a brutal dictator by means of weapons of clinical accuracy, deploying the minimum force possible, and hence pave the way for democracy and a lasting settlment of the problems of the Middle East. It is now clear that what happened was very different from this official explanation of events. The United Nations was actually taken over by the US to secure its strategic oil supplies at a time when the USSR was disintegrating. The bombing was on a horrific scale which inflicted untold suffering on the Iraqi civilian population both at the time and subsequently. A fedual king in Saudi Arabi was protected and the undemocratic Al-Sabah family was re-installed in Kuwait; Saddam's harsh regime, originally built up with enthusiastic Westren help, was actually consolidated in Iraq; and the double standards of the West, with respect to the Palestinians, stands out more glaringly than ever. When a superpower war machine gets going and the media puts itself at the disposal of the political leaders and generals who are cranking it up, all understanding is driven from the airwaves and the newspapers to ensure public support for that war. So it was during that short bloody conflict.

With Editorial Commentary by Val Valerian World Wide Web Site: http://www.trufax.org Introduction (Applause) Thank you so very much. I am Joyce Riley, and I am here because I love my God and I love my country, and I love my fellow man. We are going to hear a story tonight that unfortunately is the saddest story, not only of the 20th century, but of America's history. You are going to hear about the destruction of the United States military. I am sorry to have to bring you this story. I wish it wasn't true. I wish that I could protect you from what you are going to hear tonight, because it has taken me a year to investigate this story. During that time, I went through the worst depression you can imagine. I finally came to the conclusion one day that - yes, our country had provided the biologicals to Saddam Hussein that were used on our troops.

a non-governmental organization on the Roster 1. International Educational Development/Humanitarian Law Project welcomes the progress made on the issue of toxics and the innovative and necessary work of the Commission's rapporteur Fatma-Zohra Ksentini. We have submitted information to the rapporteur on the use of weapons containing depleted uranium by the United States forces in the Gulf War. We are also continuing to compile information on this subject in light of Sub-Commission resolution 1996/[ ] (U.N. Doc. E/CN.4/Sub.2/1996/L.18) which requests that information on the use of weapons of mass destruction, including those containing depleted uranium, is including in a report by the Secretary-General to the Sub- Commission at its forty-ninth session. 2. During the Gulf War up to 800 tons of munitions containing depleted uranium were used by United States forces in military actions in Kuwait and Iraq. This was the first field test of these weapon in actual combat, and they proved to be exceptionally effective anti-tank projectiles due to their superior armour-piercing capacity. It is unclear how much of the discarded shell casings and other radioactive material still remains in Iraq, but several investigators who have traveled to the area reports that shell casings containing depleted uranium are scattered all over the ground in many areas, including in school yards and other similar civilian locales.

Powell's Mideast tour stops to mark Gulf War anniversary
WEB EXCLUSIVE Andrea Koppel: Powell takes Jordan's king for a spin KUWAIT CITY, Kuwait (CNN) As 10th anniversary celebrations of the liberation of Kuwait continued into Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said the alliance against Iraq had effectively diffused Saddam Hussein's threat against the tiny oil emirate. But Powell, who served as chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff during the war that forced Iraqi invaders out of Kuwait, said he wasn't surprised that Hussein was still in power 10 years later. "Never underestimate the power of a dictator," Powell told CNN, adding that he believed the coalition of nations against Baghdad had "pretty much removed his [Hussein's] stings." Powell arrived in Kuwait after arriving earlier Sunday from Israel, the West Bank and Jordan. Foremost during the Sunday trips were meetings with Israeli-Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon and Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat.

The spokesman did not say when documents on the pilot would be made public.

RELATED Gulf War veterans suing companies for chemical exports DALLAS, Texas (CNN) – As U.N. inspectors search Iraq for weapons of mass destruction – including chemical weapons – a U.S. researcher may be on the way to unraveling the mystery of Gulf War illnesses, and he says the ailment may be linked to low levels of chemical agents. Gulf War illnesses include a collection of symptoms such as chronic fatigue, skin rashes, muscle and joint pain, memory loss and confusion. The Department of Defense says about 20,000 veterans suffer from those illnesses. Veterans' advocates say the number is tens of thousands higher. The Presidential Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans' Illnesses declared in 1996 that "Stress is likely to be an important contributing factor to the broad range of illnesses currently being reported by gulf war veterans." Other possible, physiological causes were discounted. Dr. Robert Haley of the Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, says the stress theory is wrong, dead wrong.

Bush and Rumsfeld plan tight control of information
By BBC News Online's Kevin Anderson in Washington While the US prepares for a war on terrorism, the media is preparing for a battle for information. When the firing starts, the information may cease
US military commanders in the Gulf War tightly controlled access to information during the Gulf War, restricting most journalists to escorted pools. And the media is concerned that President George W Bush's administration will have similar policies with respect to the control of information, especially owing the role key members of the present administration played in the Gulf War. Vice President Dick Cheney was then Secretary of Defence, and Secretary of State Colin Powell was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. But with special operations troops expected to take a lead role in the conflict, this might be a war fought mostly in secret.

“[A] war of collective punishment, a war of mass destruction directed at the civilian population of Iraq. The UN, at the insistence of the U.S., and contrary to international conventions and treaties, has created, in Iraq, a zone of misery and death - with no end in sight... The toll of these sanctions on an entire generation of Iraqi children is incalculable. What are the implications of Iraqi children growing up traumatised by hunger and disease, if they survive at all? How can the deeds of one leader or even an entire government be used to justify this unprecedented, internationally sanctioned violation of human rights?... The devastating effects continue to harm the environment, agricultural production and health of the Iraqi people significantly.”
