Dubai is bracing for the economic fallout of a war
By the BBC's Julia Wheeler in Dubai The rulers of the Gulf states have joined other Arab leaders in expressing their revulsion at the events in the United States.
Wrong does not wear a turban or a cowboy hat - it happens everywhere in the world
Abdallah al-Serkal They are strong American allies and remember clearly the support they received during the Gulf War. But they will be treading a difficult line in the coming months between backing America's declared war against terrorism and dealing with their people's anger if innocent Muslims are killed. And the effects of any military action are likely to be keenly felt in the Gulf. Plain wrong Inside Dubai's large Jumeirah Mosque, Abdallah al-Serkal is showing Westerners how Muslims pray. In a city where around 75% of the population is ex-patriate, his organisation, the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, aims to bring down the barriers between local Arabs like himself and the people they see as their "guests".

INTRODUCTION:
The purpose of this instructional module is to present a methodology to determine the size of an oil spill. This methodology employs the use of a Landsat TM data set, which covers a study area of 512 by 512 pixels. The data set depicts conditions present on March 4, 1991 at Dawhat Ad Daffi, near the city of Al Jubail on the Saudi coastline.
BACKGROUND:
Persian Gulf
The Persian Gulf, also called the Arabian Gulf by the Arab countries, is a kidney-shaped water body orientated in a northwest to southeast direction. It is approximately 917 km (570 miles) long with its greatest width being 338 km (210 miles). The Shatt-al- Arab river, the Gulf's main source of fresh water, flows primarily from Iraq into the northern end of the Gulf. The Tigris and Euphrates, two of the largest river systems in the Middle East, merge together to form the Shatt-al-Arab river shortly before it enters the Gulf. At its southeast terminus, the Gulf is linked to the Gulf of Oman and eventually the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean via the Strait of Hormuz. The Gulf covers 233,100 km (90,000 square miles), an area equal in size to New York State and Pennsylvania combined, and contains 8630 km

127. Bibliography Of Protests Against Gulf War 1 (1991)
Studies on the protests that challenged the gulf war of 1991. Topics include studies of participants, mediamovement interactions, and public perceptions of gulf war protesters.
http://www.geocities.com/gulfprotestsbib/index.html
BIBLIOGRAPHY OF PROTESTS AGAINST GULF WAR 1 (1991) Operation Desert Storm was not a "patriotic triumph" for many U.S. citizens. Numerous Americans silently disapproved of the war, while others defiantly created a movement of Gulf War dissenters. By the late 1990's the recognition of these protests had faded from the public's consciousness. On top of this amnesia among the general citizenry, some insightful peace scholars have minimized the size of the protests. For example, peace historian Charles Chatfield (1992) wrote, "So brief and militarily successful was the [Gulf] war . . . that no significant opposition evolved" (p xi) and Sociologists Sam Marullo et. al. (1996) said that the Gulf War inspired only a brief "'minisurge' in peace activism." (p. 10). The purpose of this web-page is to give citizens and academics a list of empirical studies that counter these misconceptions. In doing so, readers will get references to studies that describe different aspects of mobilization against 1991 Gulf War. Since I am scholar who values academic integrity and sound research principles, I have only included works which pass a minimal level of academic rigor (clearly none of these works have perfect research designs, but even the best social scientific studies contain methodological limitations). Moreover, I have only included original research that primarily limits its focus to Gulf War demonstrations (i.e., not general studies of peace movements). LINKS:

Henry V, the Gulf War, and Cultural Materialism Dr. Kevin Ewert, University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Dr. Ewert is Assistant Professor of Theatre at Pitt-Bradford, and also the General Manager of the Unseam’d Shakespeare Company in Pittsburgh Productions he has directed with Unseam’d include Coriolanus (Best Stage Production of 1999, In Pittsburgh The Libertine (Top 10, Best of Theatre 2000, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ) and The Winter’s Tale (Best of Theatre 2001, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Abstract: This paper is about the difficult relationship between visions of the future and known history in Shakespeare’s Henry V ; it is also about finding a way to make cultural materialism comprehensible to undergraduates. Three particular moments of historical/cultural schism are analyzed: between the play and the history it represents, when the final Chorus steps forward and tells us that everything Henry has won will shortly be lost; between the play and its originary moment, where a hopeful vision of the Earl of Essex returning victorious to London from Ireland is dashed only months after the play premiered; and between a modern victor in a modern battle, in a series of articles in Forbes magazine using Shakespeare’s play to “understand” the Gulf War.

A decade after Gulf War, Iraq endures
WEB EXCLUSIVE Quiet reflection, business as usual mark anniversary in Baghdad The bombing of Baghdad during the Gulf War In this story: The country has rebuilt Recycling, re-creating and surviving Arms inspectors left two years ago RELATED STORIES, SITES From Jane Arraf CNN Correspondent BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) Ten years later, the Amaryia shelter in Baghdad, Iraq, remains a powerful symbol of the Gulf War. The United States said the bunker was a military command and control center. Iraq denied it. Whatever the case, 400 civilians were killed when U.S. missiles slammed into it. A decade later, the pain and the controversy endure. Also enduring is the country's leader, Saddam Hussein. But he is more than a symbol. He is a powerful force who has survived three major U.S.-led attacks since the Gulf War, as well as bombings and plots to depose him.

United Nations The Gulf War 1990-91 The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait began on 2 August 1990, initiating the Second Gulf War. The UN-sanctioned operation to liberate Kuwait commenced on 17 January 1991, with the land offensive following on 24 February. A ceasefire was declared on 28 February, with a formal end to hostilities on 12 April 1991. The Royal Australian Navy provided the main Australian contribution, in the form of RAN Task Group 627.4 of two frigates and an underway replenishment ship. Because the latter ship had no air-defence capability, a missile-launcher detachment was provided from the Army's 16 Air Defence Regiment. Army medical personnel were provided for two Australian surgical support teams on US Navy hospital ships in the area while other Army personnel served with one joint intelligence detachment and on individual exchanges with other allied armies. Gulf War Nominal Roll This Preliminary Gulf War Nominal Roll, prepared by the Department of Veterans' Affairs in Canberra, lists Australian Defence Force personnel involved in that conflict. It includes all personnel involved in the hostilities and associated operations in the Persian Gulf from August 1990 to September 1991.

Clinton defends changing status of downed Gulf War pilot from 'killed' to 'missing'
In this story: Pilot's family to receive his salary Wreckage found in 1994 RELATED STORIES, SITES From John King CNN Senior White House Correspondent, Andrea Koppel State Department Correspondent, and Chris Plante Military Affairs Producer WASHINGTON (CNN) A Gulf War pilot initially listed as killed in action was reclassified to missing in action because of evidence "which convinced me that we can't ensure that he perished," President Clinton said. Clinton spoke to reporters in Boston, Massachusetts, on Thursday, a few hours after saying in an interview with CBS Radio that "we have some information that leads us to believe that he might be alive. And we hope and pray that he is." Clinton went on in the CBS interview to say, "I don't want to raise false hopes." But some Pentagon officials privately voiced concern that Clinton's remarks could be interpreted as suggesting the government believed Navy Lt. Cmdr. Michael Scott Speicher was alive.
