Gulf War
The Gulf War was perhaps the most efficient war in American History, at least when considering the cost in American lives. It proved that U.S. technology and U.S. military doctrine is a potent force when applied to the world stage. Years after the war's end there are disagreements about whether the U.S. was justified in waging war against Iraq and over whether the war was prosecuted far enough. Beyond answering these questions, this site is dedicated to recounting a brief history of the war. To navigate this site, you may either read straight through every page by following the "next page" links at the end of each section. Or you may link directly with a specific topic by using the index links provided below: A brief history of Iraq and some of the factors that lead Iraq to launch an attack on their neighbor to the south. Instances of Use of United States Forces Abroad, 1798 - 1993
by Ellen C. Collier, Specialist in U.S. Foreign Policy,
Foreign Affairs and National Defense Division
Washington DC: Congressional Research Service Library of Congress October 7, 1993 Summary
This report lists 234 instances in which the United States has used its armed forces abroad in situations of conflict or potential conflict or for other than normal peacetime purposes. It brings up to date a 1989 list that was compiled in part from various older lists and is intended primarily to provide a rough sketch survey of past U.S. military ventures abroad. A detailed description and analysis are not undertaken here.
The instances differ greatly in number of forces, purpose, extent of hostilities, and legal authorization. Five of the instances are declared wars: the War of 1812, the Mexican War of 1846, the Spanish American War of 1898, World War I declared in 1917, and World War II declared in 1941.

Gulf War Collection
The war with Iraq was one of the biggest media events in history, if not the biggest. As a result, it generated more jokes in a shorter time span than any other event I can recall. Many of the jokes were just recycled jokes from other wars; however a large number were original and germane to this particular war. Below I have collected much of the best material based on the war and the circumstances around it. Most of it is the new material, though you will find a few recycled bits. I don't believe any other collection of this sort exists outside this book. Be warned that some of the jokes here could be considered racist towards Arabs and Iraqis. Such was the culture bred by the war.

    Source of Exposure:
Uranium metal is autopyrophoric and can burn spontaneously at room temperature in the presence of air, oxygen and water. At temperatures of 200-400 degrees Centigrade, uranium powder may self-ignite in atmospheres of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Oxidation of uranium under certain conditions may generate sufficient energy to cause an explosion (Gindler 1973). Friction caused by bullet or missile entry into a tank or armored car, for example, can cause the uranium to ignite, forming a concentrated ceramic aerosol capable of killing most personnel in the vehicle. Depleted uranium was used extensively in place of tungsten for ordnance by the US and UK in the Gulf War. There is no dispute of the fact that at least 320 tons of depleted uranium (DU) was "lost" in the Gulf war, and that much of that was converted at high temperature into an aerosol, that is, minute insoluble particles of uranium oxide, UO or UO , in a mist or fog. It would have been impossible for ground troops to identify this exposure if or when it occurred in war, as this would require specialized detection equipment. However, veterans can identify situations in which they were likely to have been exposed to DU. Civilians working at military bases where live ammunition exercises are conducted may also have been exposed.

Administration and Defense Department sources said Wednesday a review of information gathered since 1996, including interviews with Iraqi defectors, prompted Navy Secretary Richard Danzig's decision to change the status of Navy Lt. Cmdr. Michael Scott Speicher. One administration official said the United States raised the issue of Speicher with the government of Iraq on Wednesday, but would not elaborate.

I wish to personally welcome you to this web site. It has been created, with love, for you. When we first get diagnosed (or wonder if we should be diagnosed), I know too well how difficult it is to find information about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (aka CFIDS, M.E.), Lyme, and/or Fibromyalgia Syndrome. There are a myriad of sites that bring you the basics, and I try to present you those basics as well as information slightly beyond. At the moment, there is no cause nor cure. There are no magic bullets. This disease is so complex, no one drug will work. This is not a disease of just your muscles, your immune system, your sleep dysfunction, your hormones, your nutritional deficiencies, your NMH, or your gut; it is a cluster of symptoms that involve every system of your body. Treating it, therefore, involves testing and treating those deficiencies. The controversies surrounding that and the differences in our health contribute to our stress. My new job is to help us sort that all out. Hugs, Marilyn K

    119. Contamination Of Persian Gulf War Veterans And Others By Depleted Uranium
A document compiled by the WISE Uranium Project.

Contamination of Persian Gulf War Veterans and Others by Depleted Uranium
    by Leonard A. Dietz
July 19, 1996 (last updated Feb. 21, 1999) (reproduced here with permission)
    Abstract
We develop background information about depleted uranium (DU) and use it to describe a physical model of how on the battlefields in Kuwait and Iraq a large number of unprotected Gulf War veterans could easily have acquired dangerous quantities of DU in their bodies.
    • We examine how U-238, which comprises more than 99% of DU, decays radioactively, producing two decay progeny that are always present with it and add significantly to its radioactivity. The pyrophoric nature of uranium metal causes it to burn (oxidize rapidly) when heated by impact or in fires to form invisible aerosol particles that become airborne.
    • We refer to scientific measurements that have been made of the atmospheric wind-borne transport of uranium aerosols over distances up to 26 miles (42 km) from their sources. Stokes' well-known physical law helps to explain how airborne transport of DU particles can occur over large distances.
    • We describe how gamma rays and energetic beta particles become absorbed in body tissue and can traverse large numbers of body cells, potentially causing damage to genetic material in the nuclei of living cells. We describe a biokinetic model developed by the International Commission on Radiation Protection that explains how uranium microparticles can enter the body and spread to vital organs. The model predicts that an acute intake of uranium particles can result in urinary excretions of uranium for years afterward.
