Especially for Students
Especially for Students
S tudents and youth groups throughout the United States have contributed significantly to the Veterans History Project.
Guidelines for Students/Youth Participation
Based on our experience with young adult volunteers, we share these observations:
  • Appropriate grade levels: grades 10-12 and higher. Lower grades require significantly more guidance and supervision.
  • We want oral histories that tell more than the dates and places of service: wartime veterans and civilians have extensive stories to share.
  • We also accept original letters, diaries and photographs with the recorded interview.
  • Familiarize students with interviewing:

Much of Iraq's export capability was lost during the Iran-Iraq War, either to war-related damage or due to political reasons. In 1982, for instance, Syria (allied with Iran at the time) closed the 500-mile, 650,000-bbl/d-capacity Banias pipeline, which had been a vital Iraqi access route to the Mediterranean Sea and European oil markets. By 1983, Iraq's export capabilities were only 700,000 bbl/d, or less than 30% of operable field production capacity at that time.
Iran's revenue share fell after the 1978/79 Iranian Revolution, followed soon thereafter by the Iran-Iraq War for much of the 1980s [and has not recovered since]. All Iranian onshore crude oil production and output from the Forozan field (which is blended with crude streams from the Abuzar and Doroud fields) is exported from the Kharg Island terminal located in the northern Gulf. The terminal's original capacity of 7 million bbl/d was nearly eliminated by more than 9,000 bombing raids during the Iran-Iraq War.
The tanker war seemed likely to precipitate a major international incident for two reasons. First, some 70 percent of Japanese, 50 percent of West European, and 7 percent of American oil imports came from the Persian Gulf in the early 1980s. Second, the assault on tankers involved neutral shipping as well as ships of the belligerent states.

    The Gulf War
During Canada's Operation in the Gulf War, about 4000 service personnel participated in the intervention, with a peak of 2,700 personnel in the Persian Gulf region. The Canadian Air Task Group was located in Doha, Quatar with the joint Headquarters, in Manamah, Bahrain. The air force provided combat air patrols, air transport and air-to-air refuelling missions. During the conflict Canadian, CF-18s completed 56 bombing sorties against Iraqi forces. Air force experience during the war and operational evaluations of the era highlighted the need to improve command and control and coordination of ground support personnel and equipment for deployed operations. Support capabilities were combined into ad hoc deployed elements. Coordination across multiple chains-of-command and lines of communication significantly complicated operations. The result of this realization was the development of an air force contingency capability structure. The mission of the contingency capability was to generate deployment forces capable of supporting worldwide air operations and other national commitments. The CC concept assemble modular components into a deployable force package tailored to the requirements of the specific operation.

Iraqi troops took control of the capital of Kuwait, Kuwait City and also took control of Kuwait's rich oil fields. The UN Security Council, over a period of five months, called for Sadaam Hussein to remove his troops. When he did not, a coalition of 32 nations which included the United States launched an attack upon Iraq. General Colin Powell points out areas on two maps of the Middle East. Also present is Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney. (Photo: Courtesy of George Bush Presidential Library.) For more than 10 years, the United States government and its allies , or friends, have wanted to overthrow President Saddam Hussein (sah-DAHM hoo-SANE), because they believe he is dangerous. He is a dictator , or a leader who rules by military force. Anyone who criticizes Hussein in public is either jailed or executed. regime [government] change would be in the best interests of the region, the best interests of the Iraqi people," says U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell. In early July, the public learned that the Pentagon had outlined a plan to attack Iraq from land, sea, and air. Thousands of soldiers would target airfields, roadways, and television and radio stations, according to the plan. They would destroy factories where government officials suspect Hussein makes nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons of mass destruction. History of Conflict Hussein's troops invaded neighboring Kuwait in 1990, hoping to control its immense oil wealth. The United Nations (UN) ordered Iraq out of Kuwait. When Hussein refused, President George H.W. Bush (the current President's father) and U.S. allies launched an attack called Operation Desert Storm in 1991. They drove Iraqi troops out of Kuwait in less than two months, but Saddam Hussein stayed in power.
