History

War fought between Iraq and allies of Kuwait , from January 16 to February 28, 1991, lasting 44 days altogether. The war had 3 main phases: 1) Iraq's occupation of Kuwait, 2) The diplomatic game and sanctions against Iraq, 3) The allied war against Iraq.
The war was more than any war before fought on two very different fronts: in addition to the war field, it was fought in the medias.
The media war was at first staged by Iraq and Kuwait. While Kuwait hired the best media advisors to present their case, in order to secure the support of the international audience, both the common man and the politicians, Iraq relied on its own outdated media personnel. Iraq's presentations of Saddam Hussein patting intimidated Iraqi infants, will forever remain among the more comic moments in the history of international politics. Economic causes of the Gulf War
The Prussian militarist Clausewitz declared that war was "nothing but the continuation of politics by other means" . He would have been nearer the truth if he had said that war was the continuation of economics by other means. Since the onset of capitalism five hundred years ago wars have been caused by conflicts of economic interest over sources of raw materials, trade routes, markets, investment outlets and strategic points and places to secure and protect these. The threatening war in the Middle East is no exception to this rule, and in fact strikingly confirms the socialist analysis of the cause of war.
Oil and Empire
British imperialism made Kuwait, which remained nominally part of the Ottoman Empire, a "protectorate" in 1899. This was done not for its oil resources, which nobody even suspected existed, but for its strategic position. At the time Imperial Germany, already squaring up to Britain in the inter-imperialist rivalry which eventually broke out as the First World War, was planning to build a railway that would extend from Europe through Turkey and Mesopotamia down to the Persian Gulf. This was the Berlin to Baghdad railway of history book fame and, if completed, would have represented an alternative and rival to the British-controlled Suez Canal as a trade route to and from the Indian Ocean and the Far East. Kuwait, a small port and pearl-fishing centre at the northern end of the Gulf ruled by a sheik called Al-Sabah, was the likely terminus for the German project. So it was "protected" by British imperialism, to thwart German imperialism.

A Note From Wild Bill: Titled “When Gaming Meets History," this column devotes itself to historical vignettes of the fighting of World War II and post World War II events and battles. It pertains to wargaming in that it offers you views of some of the details of just what really happened during those difficult times. The other purpose of these writings is to offer ideas for possible scenario design in the game of your choice. It is, therefore, wargaming and history in one package.
The Marine Presence
Poised and prepared, the United States Marine Corps along with the Tiger Brigade of the 2nd Armored Division were in the heel of the boot, the northeastern corner of Saudi Arabia. Fighting at their side were the Pan-Arab forces, including Egypt, Syria, Kuwaiti forces and the Saudis. Of the 90,000 Marines, 17,000 were a part of the huge Amphibious Task Group, lying off the shore of Kuwait. A total of 20 Marine Infantry, 11 artillery, four tank, two LAI and two amphibious assault battalions were making ready to plunge into Iraq and head straight to Kuwait City. This included 260 howitzers of various calibers, over 200 main battle tanks, and 700 armored transport vehicles of all types. Another Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) was on standby at bases throughout the Pacific if needed.

(August 2, 1990-April 6, 1991), conflict between an international coalition of forces led by the United States and the Iraqi army under Saddam Hussein. Iraq's August 1990 invasion and annexation of Kuwait led to speculation that Iraq intended to invade Saudi Arabia and take control of the region's oil supplies. The U.N. Security Council outlawed trade with Iraq and authorized the use of force if it did not withdraw from Kuwait by January 15, 1991. President George Bush ordered U.S. troops to protect Saudi Arabia, and the protective Operation Desert Shield began. The January deadline ignored, Bush secured authorization from Congress to take military action against Iraq. In Operation Desert Storm, Allied planes began an air assault on Iraq and Kuwait to oust Hussein's army from the country. A ground war began on February 24, and in only four days of combat the United States and coalition forces defeated Hussein's troops. Bush declared the war ended on February 27, and on April 6 a cease-fire was signed. The U.N. Security Council demanded Hussein's agreement to tough financial and military conditions, requiring a renouncement of terrorism, payment of billions of dollars in damages to Kuwait, the acceptance of borders negotiated with Kuwait in 1963, and Iraq's destruction of its chemical and biological weapons. In June the Pentagon estimated 100,000 Iraqi soldiers had died in combat. Allies killed totaled less than 200.

Gulf War Syndrome
Here is the chronology of events that lead to the current Gulf War Syndrome:
  • Iraq invades Kuwait , 'Desert Shield' begins.
  • U.S. warns of Iraq's military and chemical, biological and nuclear weapons capabilities.
  • 'Desert Storm' begins . Troops invade Iraq and Kuwait, and return Kuwait to it's former rulers, in one of the shortest wars on record.
  • Troops return home and begin to complain of unusual symptoms.
  • Gulf War Syndrome is discovered. This page is provided courtesy of:

    Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
    Iraq invades Kuwait
When Iraq invaded Kuwait, the United States government acted quickly. Ships were dispatched to the Persian Gulf and oil prices shot up as an oil embargo was placed against Iraq. The U.S. Government told us that Saddam Hussein was poised to invade the neighboring countries, including Saudi Arabia, and the worlds oil supply was threatened. George Bush launched operation "Desert Shield" in which a coalition of many nation's armies gathered in the deserts of Saudi Arabia bordering Iraq and Kuwait. We believed the threat to Iraq's other neighbors was real and demanded immediate action! Public support for "Desert Shield" was tremendous. George Bush enjoyed some of his highest popularity ratings. The threat of Iraq's army to the world's oil supply was rarely questioned, though Russian spy satellite photos contradicted the reported threat. The cover-up of Russia's satellite photos was determined to be one of the Most Censored News Stories of 1991 by Sonoma State University in it's annual report on censorship. This was just the beginning of U.S. deception surrounding the Gulf War.

Iraq, then, effectively ceased to exist as a sovereign nation with its surrender in 1991. This low level warfare lasted until 2002 when President George W. Bush, following in his father's twelve year old footsteps, began rebuilding American forces in the Gulf in preparation for a new all-out campaign the aims of which were to rid Iraq once and for all of weapons of mass destruction and depose Saddam Hussein.

Patrick Eddington, former CIA analyst , together with his wife, also a former CIA analyst, quit the CIA when they found that the veterans were not being given the full truth about what was known about the probabilities and effects of exposure to chemical and biological agents during the Gulf War. Quoting from an AP story that ran in Newsday, 10-31-1996, pp A18: Washington - Records of U.S. military units deployed in the Persian Gulf war contain abundant evidence of exposure to Iraqi chemical weapons, a former CIA analyst said yesterday. He accused the Pentagon and CIA of engaging in "a pattern of deception and denial." "There's no way you can even begin to get a complete picture of what happened over there unless and until they declassify every single unit log," said Patrick Eddington, who resigned from the CIA earlier this year. During the 1991 gulf war, Eddington analyzed satellite photos of Iraqi troop movements. Later, he and his wife, Robin, also a CIA analyst, began collecting information about the possible use of chemical weapons during that conflict.
