For information on these publications click on the links. Guinea has few sandy beaches, but a great deal of cultural, historical, topographic and environmental diversity that can hold the attention of the visitor. Though its history is not particularly accessible at the moment, Guinea is integrally involved in the history of West Africa from the time of the grassland empires, through the Atlantic slave trade, colonialism, the fight for modern statehood and its course as an independent state. The motivated visitor can stay engaged tracing this history Routes Cycling to Mamou you will find a good paved road. From Mamou the pavement continues to the north to Dalaba, Pita and Labe. To the east there is pavement to Dabola, Bissikrima and Kouroussa. And to the southeast roads are paved to Faranah, Kissidougou and Guekedou. The road from Kissidougou to Kankan was once paved. And closer to Conakry the spurs to Forecariah and Boke are also tarmac. From the main system of paved truck roads there is an extended system of dirt (combinations of clay and gravel) primary and secondary roads. There is no correlation between the designation as primary or secondary and the quality of the dirt roads. If you had to define a relationship it might the inverse of what you would assume secondary dirt roads are often better than the primary dirt roads. This can be explained by the fact that secondary roads have less traffic and the vehicles are often lighter.

The Lesson Guinea Must Learn By M. Tarnue Mawolo The Perspective
March 1, 2001 Guinea, it seems, is now waking up to the reality of the danger Taylor poses. And this is good news. At least, for once, the reality is dawning that the monstrosity is real. With disaster stalking the country, and the West African sub-region facing the prospect of yet another catastrophic fallout from what is already the world's worst refugee crisis, the Republic of Guinea is now called upon to make critical choices for its own survival. Here, the choice is clear and unmistakable. It is a choice between life and death; between proactive action and suicidal inaction; between stubborn and determined defense of truth and the life of the innocent, and acquiescence to the unrepentant lunacy of the Taylor terror and refugee-producing machine. The choices Guinea makes will determine whether the country lives in peace or perish on the alter of slaughter on which Liberia died, and where Sierra Leone now lies surviving on life support, feeding solely on the humanity of Britain as the organ donor. In matters like these, confronting the menace is the only rewarding course of action. Under the circumstances, neither reticence nor stupidity can be an excuse for surrender. Commonsense will dictate that the people of Guinea take cue from hindsight. Like Liberia and Sierra Leone, Guinea will definitely dissipate into madness if, in the fuzzy name of sub-regional cooperation, she swallows the ECOWAS pill unexamined and allows other countries (many with questionable motives and long standing ties to Taylor) to make judgments and exercise veto power over what is best for Guinea's national security interest. This will be a costly mistake with far reaching consequences.

THE RISE OF THE LURD INSURGENCY

Since the first sketchy news reports in July 2000 and then spring 2001 of guerrilla fighting in Liberia’s north-western Lofa County, the LURD has been something of a mystery to the outside world. The group is essentially a loose coalition of anti-Taylor forces, drawing upon a variety of militia factions and refugee groups, increasingly backed by Guinea, with more indirect support from Sierra Leone, the U. S. and Great Britain. As Liberian dissidents collected in regional capitals and refugee camps during 2000, and groups such as the Justice Coalition of Liberia and the Organisation of Displaced Liberians (ODL) began to mount attacks within Liberia, an effort was undertaken to combine the various anti-Taylor groups into a single force. Against the backdrop of an unravelling peace process in Sierra Leone, meetings were held in Freetown in February 2000 among the Justice Coalition of Liberia, the Organisation of Displaced Liberians and the Union of Democratic Forces of Liberia (UDL). The latter was an umbrella group comprising the various factions of Liberian dissidents present in Sierra Leone, and brought together by Dr. Laveli Supuwood

A new set of exchanges, therefore, began to take place which had never been thought of before, and which naturally should have proved as advantageous to the new, as it certainly did to the old continent. The savage injustice of the Europeans rendered an event, which ought to have been beneficial to all, ruinous and destructive to several of those unfortunate countries. The abstraction of the Atlantic World is expanded by scholars who view it as a vital element in the social, economic and jurisdictional expansion of Europe from the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries.

History The introduction of the Groundnut to The Gambia
In the Western Sudan, the groundnut is one of the most important cash crops and food staple nowadays. Unlike the African bambara groundnut, it is not an indigenous species, but was brought by Portuguese traders from the Americas in the 16th century. It quickly spread through the Sudan due to its high nutrition values, draught resistance and later, as a product of long distance trade for its oils. Now it is one of the main agricultural products of landscapes that far apart as The Gambia and Northern Cameroon. Related items Pages

The History of a Cup of Coffee
There's more behind that morning cup than meets the eye ...
Research by Alan Thein Durning, text by Ed Ayers
Reprinted from World Watch, Sept/Oct 1994, with permission.
    1. The Conventional Story
n April 22, the local Sierra Club president, Paul Pizarro, began his day with a cup of coffee on the balcony of his home overlooking San Francisco Bay. He relaxed for a few minutes enjoying the warmth of the coffee against the chill of the morning mist while reviewing his notes for the Earth Day speech he was to give. Two hours later he joined a festive gathering at Altamont, where he outlined the main priorities for California's role in halting global environmental decline: protecting the Pacific rainforest and savanna ecosystems from continuing destruction by timber and development projects; halting degradation of the state's water resources by agricultural and industrial chemicals and the denuding of watersheds; and alleviation of the social inequities that create incentives to build new suburbs in pristine hillsides far from the crime and blight of cities.
That evening, Pizarro joined a few friends for dinner in Big Sur. They sat on a terrace high above the Pacific, drinking coffee and watching the sun set over the ocean. The air cooled quickly, and he had a chilling fantasy-of humanity falling off the edge of the world after all, as the detractors of Columbus had warned. Yet, he thought, if precipitous change has become a danger to our species, perhaps it could also be our salvation. In just three years, we've seen signs of hope almost unimaginable a decade ago: the end of the Cold War, the end of South African apartheid, the global Climate Treaty, the Biodiversity Treaty, the Law of the Sea, the return of large tracts of land to the Yanomami and Inuit peoples-even the election of a more environmentally conscious U.S. administration. He let go the tension in his face, watching the ocean grow dark and feeling the warmth of the coffee in his chest.

    2. Linguistic Strata
Examples of pidgins that were creolized (adopted as mother languages in their own right) include Solomon Pijin, which eventually had over 1,000 speakers aged five and over (1976) in the Solomon Islands. Bislama, a mixture of over 100 indigenous languages grafted upon a base of English and French, is now spoken by almost the entire population of Vanuatu (170,000 in 1996) and is partially creolized. Of particular interest is the fact that a group of more than 1,000 people who emigrated to New Caledonia have adopted Bislama as their primary language. The situation in Papua New Guinea, which has a population of 4,300,000 (1996), is even more dramatic. By 1982 the number of people using Tok Pisin as their primary language had reached 50,000, while another 2,000,000 used it as a second language (Grimes 1996). 3. Minority Languages and Common Languages in the Pacific Region The Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger of Disappearing published by UNESCO (Wurm 1996) provides merely a brief overview of the current situation in Papua New Guinea, Australia, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu. There is no mention of Micronesia, New Caledonia, or Polynesia, presumably because of a lack of information resulting from the large number of languages in these areas. The following report covers areas and languages that I have researched and endangered languages covered by field studies carried out by Japanese researchers.
