The young are born exact replicas of their parents with eyes open, full coat and able to run around. The young should be handled very gently and carefully from around 2 weeks old, to get them socialised and used to people. BACK TO TOP Guinea Pigs are really sociable animals and can be kept in large family groups, but be sure to have the males neutered to prevent fighting and any unwanted pregnancies. Make sure they have some safe wood to chew on. Fruitwood like apple or pear trees provides great knawing branches. This will help to keep their teeth short and stop them from overgrowing, causing your pet to stop feeding due to pain and discomfort. Hygiene is very important, the run and hutch should be thoroughly cleaned at least once a week. Droppings and old food should be removed every day, as well as checking the run and enclosure for damage. Guinea pigs are very susceptible to colds, draughts and damp, so they should be kept snug and dry at all times. Give them plenty of good quality, clean straw to snuggle down in. They also suffer from skin mites that will make them really itchy and very sore. If you notice them scratching, or if they have sore spots, you should ask your vet for advice.

The American Cavy comes in a wide range of colors and patterns, but their coats must remain smooth and short. Accepted colors include Beige, Black, Chocolate, Cream, Lilac, Red, Saffron, and White. Eye color will vary with coat color, but regardless of color they should possess large eyes. Ears are wide set, and rose petal shaped. The ears are droopy and the color depends largely on coat color. The American Cavy's coat should be silky to the touch and maintain a glossy sheen. There has been some debate, since a paper published in 1991, that centers on whether or not the Guinea Pig should be classified as a rodent. At this time they are still officially classified as rodents and will be treated as such until more information is revealed.

How to care for guinea pigs
Learn how to care for guinea pigs properly!
Guinea pigs are good pets. Learning how to choose a healthy guinea pig and setting up a good home for them is not as difficult as it seems. They are not hard animals to care for, but they are social little creatures. They like lots of attention and love. When choosing a guinea pig, consider the store from which you are shopping. Is it clean? Do the animals have fresh water, food, and clean cages? Do they have too many animals crowded together in one cage? The employees in the store should know about guinea pigs if they are selling them. Ask them any questions you may have about the care a guinea pig needs before you buy one. They will also know what supplies you will need to set up a good home. Choosing a healthy guinea pig is not difficult. Observing the guinea pig’s behavior is the first step. Look for an active guinea pig, not one that seems despondent. On the other hand, you don’t want a guinea pig that is biting all the others in the cage. Look for one with a temperament that you like. Some are more active than others. Ask to hold the guinea pig. The proper way to pick a guinea pig up is to put one hand under them, supporting their belly, and cup their hindquarters and rear legs and feet with your other hand. The guinea pig may be skittish when you first pick it up. Guinea pigs with a calm disposition will settle down quickly if you rest them on your arm or in your hand.

FERRET Guinea Pigs Guinea Pigs are not really pigs, and they don't come from Guinea . They are native to the Andes Mountains of South America . In all likelihood the name was derived because they were first introduced in Europe by early explorers who picked them up in South America and passed through Guinea on the return voyage. The Pig nomenclature refers to their squealing calls. Guinea Pigs have been domesticated for centuries. The Incas kept them as pets and as emergency food sources. Native South American people still maintain "herds" of them in their villages today. Guinea Pigs are not really pigs, and they don't come from Guinea . They are native to the Andes Mountains of South America! Diet Guinea Pigs are primarily fed a pelleted diet. They are unique in that they are the only mammal other than primates that do not metabolize Vitamin C from sunshine. Therefore their diet must be supplemented with this essential vitamin at a rate of 10 mg per day. Guinea Pig Pellets have stabilized Vitamin C added to them. It is safe to feed Guinea Pig pellets to rabbits in an emergency, but it is not safe to feed rabbit pellets to Guinea Pigs.

March is Adopt-a-Rescued-Guinea Pig Month and Pawprints and Purrs, Inc. wants to encourage you to make adoption your first option when thinking about adding a guinea pig companion to your family. These adorable little creatures make ideal family pets. The guinea pig is quiet, does not demand constant attention, has low-cost upkeep, yet is very affectionate. Learn more about guinea pigs and this March adopt a rescued guinea pig. Guinea Pig Care Responsibility involves providing proper housing, nutrition, grooming and veterinary care. Background Guinea pigs originally came from South America. They’re larger than hamsters, but smaller than rabbits. They generally live for five to seven years, and are very sociable animals. The various breeds of guinea pigs include Abyssinian, Abyssinian Satin, Peruvian, Peruvian Satin, Silkie (Sheltie), Silkie Satin, Teddy, Teddy Satin, Texal, American, American Satin, White Crested and Coronet. There are a wide variety of different hair types, colors and markings. Guinea pigs make wonderful companions. They bite only when very frightened, usually from such things as mishandling or fear of a threatening animal. Children caring for guinea pigs should always be supervised by an adult, since these animals need to be treated gently. They are not toys. Primary responsibility should be with the parents. One of a guinea pig’s most endearing traits is his tendency to whistle when excited by someone coming into the room or offering a special treat.

Why guinea pig as a young kids pet? what is the difference between a guinea pig and hamster? types of guinea pigs guinea pig care, food, cages. Intro One day I decided I wanted to know all about these little creatures, as I once saw my sisters son playing with the schools pet guinea pig, whom could be booked out for a week, so he would be able to look and take care of it and interact with it. I didn’t know why a guinea pig was better then hamster for a pet, or what food they liked or cages to buy, 'all things guinea pig'. So I began to research and noted down all the quick to know information about them in a word document and thought why not provide my months work available on the internet as a Guinea Pig Pet Care Guide, even if various bits of the information can be found freely all over the on the internet, this will save you time hunting around for information. I hope you enjoy reading it and learning from it as I did.

    Caring for rabbits,
    chinchillas and
    guinea pigs
By Hawaiian Humane Society When considering adopting a pet, most people think of cats and dogs. There are also a variety of smaller, quieter companions such as chinchillas, guinea pigs or rabbits available at the Hawaiian Humane Society and shelters on the other islands, too. Rabbits are classified as lagomorph mammals, while chinchillas and guinea pigs are rodents, but they are all similarly sized. Here are some tips for their care:
    Rabbits need attention
Potential owners often underestimate the amount of effort that is required to care for a rabbit. These creatures can live for 13 to 15 years and are relatively fragile. It is recommended that rabbits be spayed or neutered to prevent diseases and overpopulation. Un-spayed female rabbits might become temperamental or aggressive and could develop uterine cancer. "I think the closer you can come to their natural diets, the healthier they will be," said Dr. Tom Chlebecek, veterinarian at Makai Animal Clinic in Kailua. "Wild rabbits eat grass in the summer and hay in the winter. Pet rabbits should eat a limited amount of pelleted food and free choice timothy hay, plus fresh greens twice a day and a tiny amount of fruit as a treat."

Guinea Pig Care Handling and Restraint: Guinea pigs rarely violently struggle when they are being picked up but often make a "squeal of protest," which sounds pig-like to many people. Nevertheless, great care should be taken not to injure them when picking them up. The guinea pig should be approached with 2 hands. One is placed under the guinea pig's chest and abdomen, and the other supports its hindquarters. Adults and those that are pregnant should receive gentle, but firm, and total support. One of the most desirable features of guinea pigs as pets is that they rarely bite when being handled or restrained. One reference indicates that only 1 in 400 will bite under these circumstances. 1. To pick up the guinea pig, place your freehand hand palm under the hindquarters to support the animal’s weight. If it struggles, hold the hind legs to get a more secure grip. 2. To hold a guinea pig for injections, grasp and extend the hind limbs with your free hand. This will enable the veterinarian to inject the animal in the midsection. Housing: Guinea pigs can be housed on wire mesh (suitable for housing rats) but it is not recommended. Though wire mesh allows urine and most fecal pellets to drop through, thereby keeping the bedding and the residents cleaner, guinea pigs housed for long periods on wire tend to develop serious injuries to the bottoms of their feet (see section on Foot Pad Infections). Furthermore, a leg maybe broken if it becomes entangled in the mesh. This is most often a problem with guinea pigs that have not been reared on wire mesh, and occurs soon after they have been introduced onto it. Enclosures that provide solid flooring and an adequate supply of a preferred bedding are best for pet guinea pigs. They should be easy to clean, well lighted, and adequately ventilated (see Vital Statistics for preferred temperature and relative humidity ranges).

Learn how to care for a guinea pig! A guinea pig is a friendly little animal which makes a good pet for children and adults.
A guinea pig is a friendly little animal which makes a good pet for children and adults. You will notice that at first your guinea pig runs away from you and you may be concerned that your pet doesn't like you. Guinea pigs are shy animals but with alot of patience on your part, you will eventually gain his trust and he will want your attention when ever he can get it. Before you go to the pet store to pick out your new pet, there are a few things that you will need to prepare for your pet ahead of time. A Home For Your New Pet Your new pet will need a house. The house that you prepare for your guinea pig is very important. It will need to have a lot of ventilation due to the fact that the ammonia that is given off by urine can make your guinea pig sick. You should never allow him to become wet. The bedding must be kept dry at all times. An all glass aquarium is not a good home for a guinea pig because there is not enough ventilation. A wire cage with a solid bottom is a good home for a guinea pig. A large bird cage with a tray that pulls out is a good home for a guinea pig as the tray can be pulled out and cleaned daily. Food For Your New Pet The main part of your guinea pig's diet will be guinea pig pellets which you can buy in your local pet store. You should have a dish of pellets in the cage at all times so the guinea pig can eat whenever he is hungry. It is a good idea to also offer him fruit or vegtables each day.Since a guinea pig requires a lot of vitamin C, turnip greens are a good choice for a treat for the guinea pig. If you do not give him fruits or vegtables you will need to give him vitamin C drops in his water bottle. You can buy these drops in the pet store.
