One of the top ten rules of guinea pig housing: Get your pet a solid-bottom cageno wire floors, please, which will irritate her feet. As a rule of thumb, you'll need to provide FOUR square feet (that's 2 feet x 2 feet) of cage space per guinea pig. So if you're keeping more than one together, make sure there's enough room. The cage will need a sturdy cover to keep other family pets from bothering them. Plastic-bottom "tub cages" with wire tops, available at pet supply stores, also make great guinea pig homes. Line the cage with several sheets of paper and fill the bottom with bedding so your pet can make a comfy nest. Use aspen or hardwood shavings or grass hay. You can give her some shredded paper, too. Pass on cedar and pine shavings, which can make your pet sick. All guinea pigs need a cave for sleeping and resting. Use a medium-size flower pot, or you can buy a covered sleeping box from a pet supply store. Don't throw away those empty oatmeal containers and shoe boxes! They make great places for your guinea pigs to run through and play in. Plastic pipes and flower pots are good, too. Remember, you've got a new job as guinea pig housekeeper, so you'll have to clean the cage regularly. Every day you'll need to remove any old bedding, soiled paper lining the floor, droppings and stale food. Scrub the bottom of the cage with hot, soapy water once a week.

Guinea Pig Care Sheet
Physical Description Guinea pigs are not really pigs but belong to a group of rodents called cavies. They are small stocky animals with short legs and short necks. This design keeps their mouths close to the ground for eating grass. Guinea pigs come in a variety of colors and can have from one color to five or more. Their hair can be short and wavy to long and flowing. Adults weigh up to 3 pounds and live an average of 4-7 years. Behavior Guinea pigs are usually very quiet animals. When scared, threatened, or nervous they will hide in the closest safe place (i.e. an enclosed tube, box, etc.). Guinea pigs will communicate with squeaks or whistles, showing distress or contentment according to the volume. Their teeth are constantly growing and they will spend lots of time gnawing on things. If they cannot keep their teeth worn down, they will become overgrown and may need veterinary attention. Guinea pigs almost never bite unless mishandled, irritated or taste something on the handler.

Cats and dogs may be two of the most popular pets around, but small animals like hamsters are considered to be some of the best pets for first-time pet owners.
Small Pets - Rabbits
The domestic rabbit comes from the Oryctotagus cuniculus species, and is a descendant of wild rabbits from western Europe and northern Africa . Rabbits are herbivores (plant-eating), have a high reproductive rate and are most active at dawn and dusk. When threatened, rabbits won't stand their ground, but will use their lightning speed to run away from harm. This unaggressive behavior makes them popular pets. If you're a rabbit owner, you may have noticed that rabbits will eat their own poop directly from the anus . To help avoid this behavior, you should make rabbit pellet food available for your pet 24 hours a day (keep a small dish in the cage full at all times). These pellets are rich in protein, fiber vitamins and minerals and is the best way for them to obtain these nutrients. You should also feed your bunny lots of

Caring For Your Guinea Pig
Guinea pigs or Cavies are naturally clean animals that make ideal pets especially for children but they can be a little timid so be gentle ! Guinea pigs were originally discovered in South America and are closely related to the chinchilla which also comes from South America. They can be indoor or outdoor pets and there are many different types. They are usually distinguished by their hair and coat. They are commonly classified as Smooth Coats, Abyssinian or Peruvian. Guinea Pigs usually have a life-span of 4-7 years if looked after properly. Here are some handy tips to help you care for your guinea pig ! Where will your guinea pig live ? Your guinea pig needs a good well constructed hutch, if being kept inside. Alpine pet shop can help you choose a suitable one. Ensure the hutch has a water proof roof with an overhang and the floor should be treated with a suitable protective sealant. Ideally the hutch should have two rooms to allow the guinea pigs to have a separate bedroom. If being kept indoors then a cage large enough to allow the guinea pig to run around should be purchased. Do not place the cage in a draft or in direct sunlight.

They were first domesticated by the Andean Indians of Peru, who used them as a food source and as a sacrificial offering to Incan gods. During the 16th century, Dutch explorers introduced guinea pigs to Europe, where fanciers selectively bred them. The guinea pig entered the research laboratory in the 18th century and have since made significant contributions to the scientific community. To this day, the guinea pig remains a favorite pet among children due to their docile behavior, ease of handling and clean, quiet nature.
Through selective breeding efforts, guinea pigs are found in an array of colors and coat types from which to choose. Five primary varieties are encountered in the pet industry. The Shorthair or English is characterized by having a uniformly short hair coat. The Abyssinian has whorls or rosettes in their short, rough, wiry coat. The Peruvian is recognized by its very long, silky hair. These three types are most commonly kept as pets. The Silky and Teddy Bear varieties are encountered less frequently. The Silky is a large variety distinguished by its medium length silky hair. The Teddy Bear has medium length hair of normal consistency.
