  • Guinea Pig Care From " Ask DIY "
    episode ADI-702 advertisement
The gentle guinea pig makes a wonderful pet for a child. Pets are a good way for children to learn responsibility. But what type of animal makes a good first pet? Ask DIY 's Pet expert, Thane Maynard of the Cincinnati Zoo, thinks the guinea pig is ideal. Here are a few reasons why::
    • Guinea pigs are relatively easy to care for, easier than a larger animal such as a cat or a dog.
    • Their life expectancy is from three to seven years.
    • They can live in a small cage or a contained area in a child's bedroom, or on a kitchen counter (this will give them ample opportunity for socializing with the whole family).
There are just a few points you should keep in mind when caring for a guinea pig:
    • They need a constant source of water.
    • They require lots of vitamin C, so give them plenty of orange slices, broccoli and kale, as well as pelletized food available in pet shops.
    • Guinea pigs are rodents, so they will chew constantly. Be sure to provide them with alfalfa cubes or chewing blocks to help keep them from chewing what they shouldn't.

Eva's Home Page Eva's Cavy Page Eva's Rat Page Eva's Natal Rat Page Differing views on pet care:
I think it is very interesting that people have so many different views on the topic of pet care. I have been thinking about this a lot. Some people I know use the smallest cages they possibly can and they give their animals the cheapest and easiest-to-feed kind of food to the animals, in order to be able to keep as many animals as possible for breeding purposes. Some of these people, when asked, of course have totally other views on pet care than the person with just a few highly beloved pets. This is exactly as with dog owners. Some dog owners think it is totally ok to leave the dog alone all day, and take it out on a 5 minute pee walk once in a while. Other dog owners would feel that it is totally unthinkable to leave such a highly social animal as a dog alone all day, and would also take the dog out for long walks every day. Some dog owner's fool themselves by getting two dogs and think that two dogs may be happier together in the absence of their owner. But two lonely dogs are just two lonely dogs, waiting for their owner. It is better to pay somebody to walk the dog during the day, or even pay somebody (a human companion) to

Type Guinea pigs are in the rodent family (related to chinchillas and porcupines). Half of the mammals in the world are rodents. The order is so huge that it had to be divided into Suborders: Sciuromorpha - squirrel-like rodents, Myomorpha - mouse-like rodents and Caviomorpha - cavy-like rodents. Guinea pigs are cavy type rodents. They are warm blooded mammals. Like most cavies, the guinea pig has short legs, a short neck, a big head and no tail. Temperament Entertaining and gentle, the pet guinea pig is vocal and delightful. They have become very popular pets because of their docile temperaments, tendency not to bite or scratch when handled, relatively clean habits and availability. They are sociable animals and enjoy daily interaction. When their person walks into the room they let out a "bweeep - uueeeep". as if to say "Hello, got any tasty treats for me today?" A guinea pig tends to run when you try to pick them up, however a guinea pig who has been handled since it was weaned will be well-mannered and gentle once you catch them. Guinea pigs like to live in small, extended family groups, the male guinea defends a small territory. Two males housed together may get into aggressive fights. Guinea pigs who live alone should be placed in a room where they can watch their people and where you can talk to them

CARING FOR GUINEA PIGS HISTORY: Guinea Pigs (otherwise known as Cavies) are small rodents indigenous to South America where several different species may still be found. They are grazing animals who, in their natural habitat, live in extended family groups. GENERAL: Before you decide to obtain a guinea pig, remember it will rely on you for its every need and will require daily care and attention 365 days of the year, regardless of any other plans you have. Average life span is 4 to 7 years. PARENTS: Remember your children may well become bored with their pet after a few months. You will then become responsible for all its daily needs. CHOOSING YOUR PET: Guinea Pigs come in a number of varieties and colours, but those with the short, smooth coat are easiest to care for. The long-haired varieties require regular grooming. The ideal Temperature for the Guinea Pig is 75°. Higher temperatures can lead to heat stroke. Nutrition Guinea Pigs must have adequate amounts of Vitamin C in their diets since their bodies are not capable of synthesizing the vitamin internally (sort of like the way humans can’t absorb calcium without vitamin D – that’s why they add it to milk). Most commercial Guinea Pig food pellets satisfy this requirement, but make sure it’s fresh. The vitamin levels in this type of form begin to lose potency after just six weeks. Adding fruit and vegetables to you pet’s diet for good measure is recommend to insure proper nutrition and will make it more tastier too). Food and water should be kept off the floor for sanitary reasons. A water bottle and hanging food tray is recommended. Change daily. Housing Housing should be at least 18 inches high, with 2 square feet of space for each pet. A glass aquarium with a screen cover, lined with wood chips or commercial bedding, is fine. If you choose a wire cage, provide a smooth floor surface made of metal or plastic sheeting. The wire netting can be rough on his feet. A small amount of hay for him to burrow in will make him a happypet. I also recommend installing a ramp or ledge made of plastic or metal ( wood is difficult to clean) for him to climb on, and hide under. The cage should be thoroughly cleaned and bedding changed weekly.

MAIN MENU: About Us Help the Animals Information News ... Pets Online Animal Care Kids Stuff Legislation Links Information Animal Care Many children have a guinea pig, a rabbit, or a mouse as a first pet. These pets make excellent companions but they are quite dependent, on their owners to provide them with care and attention every day. It is best for people, especially the parents of pet-keeping children, to make a conscious effort to accept all the responsibilities of pet ownership before finally deciding to purchase one. RESPONSIBILITIES OF PURCHASING A PET. Buying a pet rabbit, guinea pig or mouse really means that you are prepared to take on a serious daily commitment for five to ten years depending on the type of pet you choose. Children purchasing pets Owning a pet provides a child with companionship and teaches the child responsibility and care for dependent creatures. Parents, however, must at all times guide children in their choice of a pet and the husbandry of the animal, and be prepared to supervise the day-to-day care so that the animal is not neglected through ignorance or loss of interest.

In books and web sites all over the internet, you will find “minimum cage size requirements” which would lead you to believe that these figures are indisputable facts or at least based on some authoritative source. What follows is a list of sources where so-called experts have published their versions of minimum cage standards. Included is as much information as possible about the source, the background of the author, the overall intent of the book, and whether the book is distributed to pet stores. This list is still under construction and not in any specific order. Cavies for Pleasure and Profit by Edwin F. Deicke "The greatest collection of information pertaining to Cavies ever published. An encyclopedia of valuable knowledge for the amateur as well as professional breeder of cavies." (all from the book's title page) (published his own book) 119 pgs. While I obtained a copy of this book over the internet via eBay, I feel it is very relevant as a source. Clearly, Mr. Deicke was/is recognized as a credible authority on cavies and it is likely that many subsequent positions and standards are based on his experiences, biases, and published works. “The first edition of this book was published in 1917, and was during the same year that the writer was instrumental with the co-operation of a number of breeders and fanciers in organizing what was then known as the United Cavy Breeders Association, and which association established definite standards for the breeders of Cavies and also appointed qualified judges to judge stock and place proper awards at the various exhibitions thruout the country. This work is now carried on in a commendable way by the American Cavy Breeders Association.” Mr. Deicke is a charter member of the ACBA.

The normal, healthy colon contains friendly bacteria (85% lactobacillus and 15% coliform bacteria). It is the friendly bacterial flora found in yogurt and is essential to the digestive system. When these bacteria are not in balance, flatulence, constipation, and malabsorption of nutrients may occur, all of which may lead to Candida. Acidophilus taken as a dietary supplement may help to detoxify and to rebuild a balanced intestinal flora. It is used for the prevention of Candida as well as for treatment. Acidophilus aids the digestion and helps to replace the friendly intestinal flora.
