Feeding The Adult Guinea Pig
Guinea pigs are well-developed at birth and within a few months are able to eat an adult diet. Guinea pigs are strict herbivores, and like rabbits are hind-gut fermentors that practice coprophagy (ingestion of ones own feces). You can provide this essential fiber by feeding your guinea pig free-choice grass hay. The doctors at Pet Care Veterinary Hospital recommed you feed your guinea pig unlimited quantities of timothy, brome, orchard, or oat hay. Hay also helps prevent boredom by satisfying the guinea pigs innate desire to chew, which is an important means of dental health maintenance. As well, Oxbow 's Cavy Cuisine is a high-fiber pelleted diet containing stabilized vitamin C and was designed to meet the specific nutritional needs of your guinea pig. Guinea pigs are becoming a more valued, loved, and cared for pet in the eyes of their owners and as a result veterinary care for guinea pigs has increased. Those veterinarians seeing guinea pigs are noticing several health problems attributed to nutrition: vitamin C deficiency, gastrointestinal ileus, obesity, enteritis, and urolithiasis. Signs of Vitamin C deficiency (scurvy) include hindleg weakness, gum inflammation, unkempt fur coat and sometimes bleeding in the joints or under the skin. Like humans, guinea pigs are unable to produce their own vitamin C and require a dietary source. Reported daily requirements of vitamin C range from 20-50 mg per kg of body weight per day. In order to prevent vitamin C deficiency and subsequent scurvy

Breeding Facts
Female guinea pigs can be sexually mature as early as 4 weeks old. Gestation is from 59 to 73 days and average litter size is 1-4 but can be as many as 7 or more.
Breeding guinea pigs is not recommended.
Not only is it risky, it is difficult to find homes for the young with responsible and caring people your candidates may "disappear" when the time comes to adopt out the babies.
Guinea pig sows are at risk of pregnancy complications because the babies are born large and ready to run. Breeding after 8 months of age can be fatal for a guinea pig who has not had a previous litter due to dystocia. The symphysis (a joint of tough fibrous cartilage which firmly joins the 2 pubic bones) can stiffen upon reaching adulthood and she may not be able to deliver her pups unaided. Sows with dystocia usually need a caesarian section. The survival rate is very poor.
Spaying or neutering guinea pigs also carries risks even when performed by an experienced guinea pig veterinarian. The safest choice is to keep the sexes separate or have only sows or boars.

Guinea Pigs Guinea Pig Care
Cages And Equipment Housing Preparing the Cage or Hutch Feeding ... Health and Illnesses
As with any pet, keeping a guinea pig requires a commitment to care for it during its life which could be 4-7 years or longer. The commitment required includes not only routine feeding, care and time spent with the guinea pig but also the provision of veterinary treatment if the guinea pig becomes ill which can be costly. Although proper care will go a long way to ensuring that any guinea pig remains happy and healthy there may still be times when prompt veterinary treatment is needed and once a rabbit is ill it can deteriorate quickly. However, some insurance companies do offer veterinary insurance cover for guinea pigs. Guinea Pigs can be kept outside or indoors and the decision as to where the guinea pig is to be kept will affect the type of Cage or Hutch required for the guinea pig.

Care of Guinea Pigs
This care sheets contains basic information for the care of guinea pigs. Please consult more detailed sources for additional information books, websites or your veterinarian. The guinea pig (or cavy) is a member of the rodent family with an average life span of 4 to 7 years. These sociable, somewhat skittish creatures are easy to care for, seldom bite and are exceptionally clean. Wild guinea pigs are a prey species and their domestic counterparts retain a desire to run for cover when startled or threatened and so it is necessary to provide a shelter in their cage where they can seek safety. Since they do not climb they are easy to contain in a habitat and are easily located should they run free. Guinea pigs must chew to wear down their constantly-growing front teeth, so you need to provide chew items such as apple, birch or willow branches, dried (whole grain) bread crusts, hay and/or firm vegetables such as carrots and broccoli stems. Guinea pigs are social animals, so it is best if they live in pairs. Usually sows (females) cohabit well as either siblings or mother-daughter pairs. Boars (males) will sometimes get along but they often do not unless raised together. Boars should not be placed with sows under any circumstances even for a short period. Please do not breed guinea pigs. It is more difficult than you might think to find good, long term homes for the offspring. It is possible to have guinea pigs neutered but there is some risk involved – consult a veterinarian specializing in small animals.

If you re thinking about getting a guinea pig, it s smart to start You may have the space, but have you got the time to properly care for guinea pigs?
http://www.animed.org/guinea_pigs_is_a_guinea_pig_right_for_you.htm
I. Guinea Pig: Is a Guinea Pig right for you? INDEX Guess who's the most docileand vocalof all companion rodents? She's not a pig and she's not from New Guinea, but she'll love to sit on your lap, and has been known to squeak with delight when her favorite human enters the room. Could there be room for this cuddlebug in your heart and home? South American natives, wild guinea pigs were first domesticated by the Indians of Peru, who raised them mainly for food. They've been bred for the pet trade, however, in a variety of colors, from brown spotted and black banded to pure golden and snowy white. As for hairstyles, there are shorthaired and fluffy tufted guinea pigs, as well as a breed with long, silky locks that flow to the ground. (The latter, by the way, is known as the Peruvian, and if you opt for this little piggy, he'll need to be groomed daily.) Guinea pigs can weigh a couple of pounds, and have an average lifespan of 5 to 7 years. If you're thinking about getting a guinea pig, it's smart to start thinking about getting more than one. These social animals love to be with their own kind, and if you keep two or more together, they'll become great friends. ASPCA experts recommend two females for first-time guinea pig caretakers, as adult males tend to fight. If you want to keep males and females together, please have a veterinarian neuter the male and spay the female. And while it's an excellent idea to keep more than one guinea pig, please make sure you have enough room for them! These critters require a large cage with a minimum of two square feet per pig.

I. Guinea Pigs: Understanding Your Guinea Pig INDEX If you're reading this, there's a good chance you're a first-time guinea pig caretaker. Congratulations, you've got some very special, very expressive new friends. Bet you can't wait to learn all about these cuddly charactersand if you give them the chance, they'll have no problem letting you know how they feel. Easily the most vocal of all companion rodents, these charming critters will have you speaking "guinea pig" in no time. Did you know that your pet's wild counterparts are highly social and live in large herds? That’s why it's very important that you keep at least a pair. Two or more guinea pigs housed together will become great friends, but they will also bond with you, too. You'll need to give each of your pigs some special attention every day. For the more mellow fellows, 30 minutes or so of quietly sitting on your lap may be pure heaven. While most piggies enjoy cuddling with their humans, a few individuals don't. If yours is in the latter group, take the time to figure out what he likes best. Maybe he'd prefer to tunnel through some of his favorite PVC pipes! There's something special about your pets' teeth, too. Your guinea pigs' front teeth, like that of all rodents, grow continuously throughout their lives. To help keep their choppers properly shaped and nicely filed, your pets will need to chewa lot! Check your pet supply store for a variety of safe, appropriate chew toys. Branches and twigs from untreated trees will also fit the billAND give your companions something fun to do. Do not give them wood from cedar, apricot, cherry and peach trees, as they are toxic.

FamilyCorner.com For as long as I can remember, I have had guinea pigs as pets. My first
"piggy" was known as Pixie. My Dad gave him to me when I was six years old. He was so lovable and friendly, I'll never forget him. Now my
children have guinea pigs as their family pets.
You may have never even heard of guinea pigs, or perhaps you've seen them in your child's classroom. If you've been considering a guinea pig as your next, or even first family pet, you'll be pleasantly surprised at how gentle and social these little creatures are.
Why a Guinea Pig?
These small animals, members of the rodent family, are docile and quite social. Their gentle and friendly nature make them a joy to hold and care for, especially for children. They rarely bite, making them great with kids. Because they are a bit nervous by nature, they should be handled with care until they are accustomed to you, so as not to frighten them.

GUINEA PIGS
The guinea pig is a docile rodent native to the Andes Mountains of South America. They were first domesticated by the Andean Indians of Peru and were used as a food source and as a sacrificial offering to the Incan gods. Dutch explorers introduced guinea pigs to Europe in the 16th century. Because of their docile nature, clean, quiet behavior, guinea pigs became popular pets. Selective breeding has given us the five varieties most commonly seen today. They are: American (or English) which has a uniformly short and smooth coat
Abyssinian which has whorls in a short rough coat
Silkie which as a long silky coat that falls into rear and side sweeps
Peruvian which as a long flowing coat but also has whorls that direct the hair
Teddy which has a short upright kinky coat that is very resilient when touched. DIET Quality food and fresh clean water must be available to the guinea pig at all times. Pelleted guinea pig chow is specifically formulated for guinea pigs and contains all of the essential nutrients required. DO NOT give guinea pigs rabbit food. They are not the same. Guinea pigs require high levels of folic acid and Vitamin C which they must receive from their food. Even when stored properly in a cool dry place, guinea pig food looses about 1/2 of its Vitamin C content within 6 weeks after manufacturing. Therefore, it is recommended add a Vitamin C supplement to the guinea pigs water. 50 milligrams of liquid Vitamin C added to 1 cup of drinking water is sufficient, but must be made up fresh every 12 hours. Alternately, a handful of fresh kale, cabbage or 1/4 orange offered daily will give enough vitamin C.
