Cultural Orientation Trainers Exchange Report, 2003
Shawn Webb, YMCA International Services, IRSA, Houston, Texas
I. Purpose and Overview
I feel particularly fortunate to have been involved on both parts of the exchange. In May, I coordinated the four-day visit to Houston for two overseas CO trainers from OPE-Accra and ICMC Turkey. A few weeks later, I was chosen to visit OPE-Accra. In many respects, visiting OPE-Accra was one of the most educational experiences of my career. I gained diverse knowledge regarding the operations of the Overseas Processing Entity (OPE), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the U.S. Department of State (DOS), and knowledge about refugee processing in general. Processing is very complex, and requires the cooperation of many organizations working together. For example, the logistical details involved in scheduling a circuit ride require close collaboration. Exposed to the operations first-hand, I was able to experience the reality and contingencies of processing, making my knowledge more real and tangible.

This drum originates with the Baga peoples, who occupy a narrow stretch of marshy lowland along the Atlantic coast of the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. The Baga, one of the smallest ethnic groups in Guinea, have lived relatively isolated from their inland neighbors and foreign visitors due to the vast swamps that surround them. Yet the Baga have created a significant artistic legacy that includes magnificent headdresses, figurative sculptures, masks, and functional objects as well as musical instruments. The Baga are known for their dynamic performances and ceremonies, both religious and secular, in which music and art play an integral role. a-ndef While such drums were carved by men, only women would have designed, commissioned and played them. This drum was carved from a single piece of wood and would have originally been painted, although little pigment remains from the time of its creation in the early 20th century. About the Iconography The form of this drum, a female figure supporting a globe-shaped drum on her head, was likely inspired by real practices of Baga women. Baga women and children often carry great clay water vessels and large rice-filled baskets on their heads. In traditional wedding ceremonies practiced before the mid-20th century, a bride was expected to perform a dance in which she carried on her head a basket, into which onlookers would throw gifts of money and rice grains.

Kusum Africa is an original work, inspired by historical events and fed by African tradition, religion and modern sensibilities. It is a passionate theatrical piece that by conception, explores the nature of Africa, and unexpectedly evolves into a highly integrated work of that spirit of Africa. Conceived by CK Ladzekpo, director of The African Music And Dance Ensemble , Kusum Africa, grew out of a three-year collaboration with Francis Nii Yartey (artistic director of the National Dance Company of Ghana), Kemoko Sano (artistic director of New York's Ballet Merveilles de Guinea) and Malonga Casquelourd (artistic director of Oakland's Fua Dia Congo). Kusum is the centerpiece of our African Choreographers Forum, an event designed to showcase and examine the state of the art in contemporary dance-drumming in Africa and abroad.

A Cultural Revolution in Africa: The Role of Literacy in the Republic of Guinea since Independence Dianne White Oyler, Ph.D. Fayetteville State University. Songs of Souleymane Kanté Ecriture Télé-Enseignement Intervention ... kafa lu serede “Culture is a better means of domination than the gun.” "Ahmed Sékou Touré" At the time of their independence most African nations attempted a process of decolonization in the three spheres of European imperialism, political, economic, and cultural. While this process in the political and economic arenas is apparent, decolonization of the cultural area is much harder to define and to illustrate because European cultural impositions had usurped the areas of language, socialization through education, and technology from simple writing to electronic media. However, in the Republic of Guinea the process can be clearly documented. Its approach to cultural decolonization can be analyzed in light of the more formal “Cultural Revolution” launched by its independence leader Sékou Touré in 1958 as a policy of the First Republic. Touré’s objective was to validate the indigenous cultures that had been denigrated by the Europeans while at the same time creating a Guinean national consciousness. In other words, Touré launched a country-wide campaign to recapture indigenous culture by formally focusing on language and education.
