THE TRUE CULTURE OF AFRICA AND AFRICANS [A picture, with the caption:] Patrice Lumumba, martyred leader of the revolutionary struggle in the Congo was a victim of capitalist inspired violence and terrorism in an attempt to stem the tide of the African Revolution. Lumumba is seated here in a jeep, hands bound, just prior to his assassination. Today the revolutionary people of Congo (K), Mozambique, Angola, Guinea (Bissau), Zimbabwe and other places are carrying on life-and-death armed struggles against imperialism and its lackeys. Some of them have already established rural revolutionary base areas, while others are intensifying their armed activities and dealing powerful blows at the enemy. Since launching an armed uprising in September 1964, the people of Mozambique have set up active base areas in two northern provinces and launched a struggle in a province in the northwest. They make frequent attacks on isolated strongholds of the enemy while constantly ambushing enemy patrols. Since the beginning of this year, the freedom fighters have been consistently winning new victories. The Portuguese colonialist troops, badly beaten, are frightened to death. In Angola, the people have persisted in armed struggle for eight years. They have established some active base areas in the Cabinda area and in the eastern part of the country where they are now carrying on armed activities. In late February this year, guerrilla forces triumphantly smashed the Portuguese colonial army barracks at a certain place.

Water and Culture
by Jesse Thyne , Mamou, Guinea Conakry, Guinea In a far-off district of my village, there is a beautiful waterfall called Tai Thie that flows into a basin the size of a large swimming pool. I first found out about the existence of this spectacular place four months after my arrival in the village during Ramadan. After discovering it, I tried to go as often as possible to swim and sunbathe. I soon found out that I would have to go alone. In my village Taï Thie is for special events only. My site mate and I often joke that the waterfall is for our village what amusement parks are for Americans. Even if you live next door to Disneyland, you still only go on special days. In my village there are three Fêtes each year, and Taï Thie is always the most exciting part for the children. The boys all come ready to play. They come in shorts and they swim and cliff dive all day. The girls come dressed in their finest outfits and they sit by the water all day, talking, laughing, and looking their best for the boys and each other. Throughout the day, more than 1000 people (mostly kids) come to the water hole that is not much bigger than a backyard swimming pool. The villagers bring firewood and cookware on the long hike so everyone can stay all day and eat at the water’s edge. Women come to sell snacks to happy hungry kids. Many people bring small radios to have music to match the sound of cheer and water. At the end of the day everyone goes home thoroughly content. Although the water is always there, and would be perfect on a hot African day, most people leave Taï Thie alone until the next time when the fun starts all over.

Recreating Africa

Culture, Kinship, and Religion in the African-Portuguese World, 1441@-1770
by James H. Sweet
Introduction
In the past ten years or so, the African diaspora has received a great deal of attention in scholarly circles. As studies and programs on the so-called "Atlantic World" have come into vogue, the notion of a single African diaspora has become an attractive way for those studying peoples of African descent to situate themselves in the broader debate over the emergence of a "creolized" Atlantic world. Unfortunately, theoretical conceptualizations of the African diaspora have not kept pace with the books, conferences, scholars, and academic programs that label themselves as such. The African diaspora often has been uncritically superimposed on the Atlantic World, allowing anyone who studies peoples of African descent to claim that they are diaspora scholars. Indeed, there seems to be a general consensus that the so-called "Black Atlantic" is synonymous with the African diaspora. While it may appear overly ambitious to study Africans in the entire Portuguese world, or even all of Brazil, this is a study of the beliefs and practices of peoples; not a study of captaincies, colonies, or nation states. By using specific African peoples as the starting point for the study, geographic boundaries have far less meaning. The "flux and reflux" of African slaves, from Lisbon to Madeira to Bahia and back to Lisbon, was not at all unusual.[4] What concerns me are the social and cultural practices that these African slaves carried with them throughout the Portuguese world. Indeed, the tenacity of certain core beliefs actually can be measured more effectively across time and space. The pervasiveness of specific African beliefs and practices across the Portuguese world illustrates the shared cultural backgrounds of peoples, despite the geographic space that separated them.

JEWS IN CAPE VERDE AND ON THE

by Richard Lobban
Paper presented at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth
11 February 1996
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND IN PORTUGAL
In Iberia the Reconquista movement was growing in its mission to recover their lands from the Muslim Moors who had first arrived in the 8th century. Jews may have first arrived far earlier during the time of the Phonecians and Roman. Nevertheless, Maghrebi Jews were key allies of the Moors and centuries-long residents of Iberia. Probably as early as 1480 one may find the beginnings of the Spanish Inquisition and expulsion of Jews. It was however in 1492 the the Spanish Inquisition emerged in its fullest expression of intolerance, anti-Semitism. This social pathology quickly spread to neighboring Portugal where Portuguese Kings Joao II and especially Manuel I in 1496, determined to exile thousands of Jews to Sao Tome, Principe, and Cape Verde. The numbers expelled at this time were so great that the term Portuguese" almost implied those of Jewish origin. Those who were not expelled were converted by force or were even executed.
Despite the important role of Portuguese Jews in commerce, navigational sciences, and in the cartography of Africa, they faced riots, pogroms, and profound oppression during the

DANCE: 'Heritage' speaks of rich history, traditions through rhythm, mime By Trisha Kirk Daily Bruin Contributor With all the diversity on display in Los Angeles alone, it's hard to imagine that a group of just 35 people could represent an entire country, much less a whole continent. But that's exactly what dancers Les Ballets Africains promises to do. This weekend, UCLA's Schoenberg Hall will resonate with the primal sounds of African drums and the pounding feet of Les Ballets Africains, the National Dance Company of the Republic of Guinea. The dance troupe will perform "Heritage," a celebration of tradition and Guinea's unique culture, passed through generations. "Guinea is an area that people know very little about, a very small country with a culture that is ancient," said Gary Lindsey, the group's U.S. tour representative. "'Heritage' is about the interconnectedness of all peoples. We have to know about where those roots come from." The stomping, grinding, rhythmic dance and mime of Les Ballets Africains will make its way with a purpose to the stage. The company's mission is to encourage a greater understanding of Africa. In past performances they have promoted environmental protection, and virtues such as loyalty, trust and compassion. "Heritage" depicts the growth of a people through generations and is determined to make its homeland proud.

BACKGROUND lingua franca spoken by at least 80 percent of the populationis Kriolo, a creole language based on Portuguese and the various African languages of Guinea-Bissau. Guinea-Bissau is one of the poorest countries in Africa. The minimum wage is about $14 per month; female and male literacy rates are 15.7 percent and 20.5 respectively; and life expectancy is only 47 years. At independence, the victorious liberation movement of Guinea-Bissau, PAIGC, the (African Party for the Independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde) introduced a political and economic order based on Marxist-Leninist principles. Procedures and results were not unlike those reported for Angola and Mozambique, where similar highly-centralized systems replaced the equally centralized and authoritarian Portuguese colonial order. Attempts to implement a socialized economy resulted in an inflated and inefficient state apparatus, reduction in productivity and increasing dependence on foreign aid, which now finances over 90 percent of the national budget. The determination to build a one-party state resulted in a massive onslaught of violations of fundamental human rights and the perpetuation of a political culture based on mutual fearthe government of its rivals, the people of the security forces. After formal independence in 1974 (the PAIGC had unilaterally declared Guinea-Bissau independent in 1973), the security forces of Luis Cabral's government executed about a hundred individuals suspected of collaboration with the Portuguese regime. After a failed coup attempt in 1978, even more met a similar fate and were buried in mass graves in the Oio region. In 1980, a successful

BACKGROUND In 1958 Guinea voted in a referendum to be independent of Gaullist France. From 1958 until 1962 the country's President, Sekou Toure, tolerated multi-party politics. Thereafter, however, he started purging the country of its intellectuals and professional classes, and the government adopted a one-party state policy, an approach which was then very much in vogue in Africa. Under Sekou Toure Guinea suffered a repressive, personal rule, which did not allow for the development of any autonomous political or social institutions. The ruling party and the state became one, and all organs of the state were subordinated to the executive, which, in essence, was President Sekou Toure. High level corruption became the norm. The state also assumed the character of the President's ethnic group, the Malinke. The regime purged or forced into exile members of other ethnic groups, while others were killed, tortured, "disappeared" or imprisoned under the Preventive Detention laws. This period also saw the economic decay of the country. Economic entrepreneurship did not thrive in a climate where scholarship and political discourse were interpreted as political dissent and thus not encouraged. Throughout this period the official Guinean position on human rights held that people's collective rights took precedence over individual rightsan excuse that the government used to justify a lot of human rights violations. Guinea ratified the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights in 1982.
