Guinea's Atlantic Coast and the Slave Route by Muguette Goufrani
The lay of the land: I will provide more details the Slave Route in the next edition of Africa Travel Magazine, and elaborate on other facets of our congress activities and travels in Guinea. We plan to organize tours from Canada and the USA to Guinea starting in 2003, and this Slave Route experience will be high on our agenda. For an overview of this fascinating country in terms of geography and scenic attractions, the following information has been provided by the Ministry of Tourism. There are 4 distinct areas designated by relief, climate, flora and fauna, which are reflected in Guinea's history and traditions. Low Guinea: Stretching along the Atlantic Ocean shoreline, and the mountains of Fouta Djalon, plus lush vegetation with mangrove swamps and coconut palms. Offshore Islands: Idyllic scenery with miles of pristine, silver sand beaches and rivers with broad estuaries. Central Guinea: Large mountains and high plateaus, plus a temperate climate has earned the area the title "Switzerland of Africa". The highest peaks are Mount Loura in Mali (1515 m) and Mount Tinka in Dalaba (1425m). They call it the Water Tower of Western Africa because many rivers take their origin (River Gambie, Senegal, Niger, etc.) from it. These rivers and churning rapids, hurtling down the mountains create beautiful waterfalls.

The Department Of Culture Of The Republic Of Guinee
WELCOME!
Founded in 1987 by the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism of the Republic of Guinea, this national ballet is the most accomplished and respected. The government of Guinea has supported and encouraged the artists of their nation since 1958, recognizing their rich cultural heritage and the natural predisposition of their peoples to the arts. The government has been largely responsible for the advancement of their visual and performing arts worldwide.
Les Percussions de Guinee is a government sponsored group of the finest percussionists, musicians, and dancers fro Guinea, West Africa. They are selected from the most distinguished masters in their field. They present a truly electrifying performance deeply enriched by the musical tradition of Guinea. Seven percussionists are chosen among the best soloists of Guinea's national companies.
Guinea percussionists are universally respected throughout Africa and the rest of the world. They present a performance inspired by traditional music resolutely modern in its scenic presentation. The group is naturally oriented toward the music of the Guinean highland and the coastal region known as the paradise of the djembe drum, but their influences are also drawn from the Guinea midland and the forest regions as well. Les Percussion de Guinee possess their own unique identity and personality, and have created an authentic musical experience.

These migrations lead to the diffusion of systems of belief and aesthetic motifs. Prospering from the trans-Saharan gold trade , the Akan kingdoms (in modern Ghana) compete for regional dominance. The kingdom of Asante , under ruler Osei Tutu, prevails and promotes the growth and dissemination of courtly arts. In what is now western Nigeria, the Yoruba state of Oyo employs its formidable cavalry to gain economic hegemony over its neighbors, including the nascent kingdom of Dahomey to the west. Finally, the kingdom of Benin suffers a nearly century-long period of political turmoil and economic depression, but reemerges in the eighteenth century as an important trading power and center of artistic production.
First-hand accounts by Dutch travelers to the court of Benin provide information about its urban architecture and royal sculpture at this time. The palace is composed of rectilinear wood buildings crowned with thatched roofs decorated with cast-brass pythons and birds. Inside, wooden pillars and beams are covered with cast-brass plaques depicting court ceremonies and battles.

of Guinea
Background:
Independent from France since 1958, Guinea did not hold democratic elections until 1993 when Gen. Lansana CONTE (head of the military government) was elected president of the civilian government. He was reelected in 1998. Unrest in Sierra Leone has spilled over into Guinea, threatening stability and creating a humanitarian emergency.
Guinea possesses major mineral, hydropower, and agricultural resources, yet remains an underdeveloped nation. The country possesses over 30% of the world's bauxite reserves and is the second largest bauxite producer. Long-run improvements in government fiscal arrangements, literacy, and the legal framework are needed if the country is to move out of poverty. .
