Editor's Note : This article is being posted here in connection with the recent visit of a TransAfrica Forum delegation to Venezuela. An interview with Jesús García, who is the director of the Afrio-Venezuelan Network, on the current situation of Venezuelans of African descent will follow soon. In 1985, I made my first trip to the Republic of the Congo in search of information about Venezuela's historical relationship with Central Africa. My purpose was to seek information to demystify the African, particularly the dominant Central African Bantu, presence in Venezuela in order to fill in the African absence in the construction of our national identity. negras, the Black "mammies" responsible for their socialization, "such that when they took power, they reproduced this magical concept of reality. My first step was to investigate seventeenth-, eighteenth-, and nineteenth-century documentary evidence in the national archives. I went to the same sources used by those who created and defended the official historical narratives. The data led me to classify cimarronaje/marooning Even Simón Bolivar, the "Liberator" of five South American nations—Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador—included abolition as part of his platform for national liberation in 1816.

Our community of graduate students brings together Ph.D. candidates from a variety of departments and programs. With the help and the funding of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Institute of African Studies supports a series of academic and intellectual happenings designed to strengthen the graduate African Studies community at Emory University. Each year, graduate students affiliated with the Institute coordinate book discussions, film screenings and lecture under the auspices of the Graduate Student Forum. In 2003-2004, the Graduate Student Forum organized a two week series of events entitled "Diamonds, Oil and Africa: the Violent Cost of Consumption" which featured a lecture by Ian Smilie on the question of "conflict diamonds". History
Guinea-Bissau was once the kingdom of Gab¹, part of the Mali Empire; parts of the kingdom subsisted until the 18th century. Though the rivers and coast of this area were among the first places colonized by the Portuguese, who began the slave trade in the 17th century, the interior was not explored until the 19th century. A rebellion beginning in 1956 by the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) consolidated its hold on the country by 1973. Independence was unilaterally declared on September 24, 1973 and was recognized by a 93-7 UN General Assembly vote in November

Reflecting on and recording culture is not just looking at the past. Reflection involves not uncritical acceptance of the past but real assessment of it. The challenge, as Amilcar Cabral saw it, is to make effective use of cultural strengths and remove weaknesses or transform them into strengths. In this way, study of crioulo and Capeverdean culture in general should be seen in the context of the evolution of Capeverdean national culture and, more generally, the evolving cultural identity of Capeverdean peoples everywhere.

Pedagogy in Process: The Letter to Guinea-Bissau is, among Freire's most recent books, the only one available in the English language. For purposes of analysis we can divide the book into two major sections: (1) reflections by Freire, intended for the reader of the book, and (2) the text of some letters written by Paulo Freire to Mario Cabral, State Commissioner of Education and Culture in Guinea-Bissau, and to the team that within Guinea-Bissau was trying to use Freire's ideas and procedures to develop a national literacy campaign. The letters themselves comprise approximately 45 percent of the book (certainly less than half of it, at least in its Spanish version, which is the one I have used). What is written directly for the reader is intended by Freire to be a "letter-report, a letter as informal as the rest of the letters which integrate the book." Freire does not seem to realize that the letter he addresses to the readers comprises the largest portion of the book itself. In truth, experiences are not transplanted; instead they are re-invented.

    Return to Guinea-Bissau
    by Matthew Bremen
I spent this past summer as a U.S. Department of State intern in Guinea-Bissau, where two years before I had finished a stint as a Peace Corps volunteer. Upon arrival, as soon as I left the aircraft, it felt like being home again. It was 2:00 a.m. on a hot and humid night. Familiar faces, smells, and sounds surrounded me. Although it had been two years, it felt like I had left Bissau only yesterday. During the usual hour spent waiting for my backpack, I realized that my experience this time around would be quite different. Not only was I whisked through customs by one of the U.S. Embassy drivers, but my apartment in the U.S. Embassy compound was more comfortable than the apartment I had just left in Washington DC. My work would be quite different too. Needless to say, my Peace Corps days were over. It was time to get used to being a part of the diplomatic community.
