Just a little bit smaller than the state of Tennessee, Guatemala is affectionately called the "Mystic Country of Eternal Spring" because of its enchanting natural wonders.
Most of the 11 million Guatemalans live in the valleys of the mountainous regions where they enjoy a temperate climate and beautiful lakes but face the challenge of living under the threatening red glow of more than 30 volcanoes! Guatemala's position on the fault line, combined with its incredibly varied climate and topography, creates an environment which boasts a unique and diverse mix of plants and animals. For instance, over 500 species of birds can be found in Guatemala, including its national bird, the brilliant emerald and gold colored quetzal. Like any country, Guatemala is both supported and challenged by its land. Take a minute to think about the impact of Guatemala's geography and environment on its people and their livelihoods. What are the pros and cons to this unusually diverse land and warm climate? In some ways, Guatemala is a particularly livable, attractive and self-sustaining country. Within its borders, Guatemala has exuberant vegetation, varied fauna, many ecosystems and a relatively large amount of coastline (about 400 kilometers!). Coastline is important because it provides people with access to water, increasing their ability to fight disease. Also, coastline supports a thriving fishing industry.

It is located in the tropical zone, and has a range of climates that vary according to the altitude. There are two seasons: the rainy months run from May to October, and the dry ones from November to April. The average temperature is 75 F, with small variations in the lowlands and in the highlands. North and Central America Luxury Vacation Packages Guatemala is a small country with a striking variety of topographic features. Nearly two-thirds of the country is mountainous and volcanic. Parallel to the Pacific lies the Sierra Madre mountain range, with peaks that rise to an elevation of up to 12,000 feet. 33 volcanoes dominate the landscape, and these, coupled with the lush tropical rain forests to the north, the fertile plains of the south and east, the beautiful lakes, and the wonderful rivers, make this a land of varied contrasts. To this rich array of contrasts, one must add a major contributing factor to Guatemala's unique brand of beauty: its wealth of traditions, and the strking colors and patterns of the weavings of the Mayans. Noted for its lush colors and intricate design, the cloth is made into blouses called "huipiles", sashes, skirts and headdresses. Every group or town has its own particular native costume. Woven by its women, usually on a stick loom, its patterns feature the traditional symbolism that identifies their history and ancient gods.

April 23, 2004 Archaeologists working deep in Guatemala's rain forest under the protection of armed guards say they have unearthed one of the greatest Maya art masterpieces ever found. The panel was excavated in perfect condition from a royal ball court. Exquisitely carved in precise high relief, the 80-centimeter-wide (31.5-inch) stone depicts the Maya king seated on an earth symbol and throne with a jaguar skin, installing subordinate rulers in the nearby city-state of Machaquila. "This panel is incredibly important," Arthur Demarest, a Vanderbilt University archaeologist and excavation co-leader, said in a satellite telephone interview from the dig site. "Every once in a while you have a beautiful, spectacular piece of art that is also profoundly historically important." Death Threats In a related development that sounds ripped from the pages of an Indiana Jones Demarest helped undercover agents from the Guatemalan S.I.C. May 6, 2004 Watch the National Geographic TV Special Dawn of the Maya Wednesday, May 12, at 8 p.m. ET on PBS. More than a millennium ago, fierce power struggles raged between Maya kings in the city of Waka, deep in the Guatemalan jungle. Today, the city is once again under assault, this time from drug smugglers, cattle ranchers, and the impoverished farmers they hire as arsonists. Last year, more than 2,000 forest fires were set in the region, burning more than 100,000 acres. On the front lines of this battle: archaeologist David Freidel, whose team is excavating the ancient site, nestled inside Laguna del Tigre National Park, Central America's largest nature preserve. As the forest disappears, he warns, the Maya history is being wiped out, too. Freidel believes Waka was once an important economic and political center of the Maya world, a stop on a royal road between major cities like Calakmul to the north and Tikal to the west. Among the most important discoveries his team has made in Waka is a royal tomb containing a female Maya ruler.
