of Guatemala Background:
The Maya civilization flourished in Guatemala and surrounding regions during the first millennium A.D. After almost three centuries as a Spanish colony, Guatemala won its independence in 1821. During the second half of the 20th century, it experienced a variety of military and civilian governments as well as a 36-year guerrilla war.
In 1996, the government signed a peace agreement formally ending the conflict, which had led to the death of more than 100 000 people and had created some 1 million refugees.

Guatemala is situated in Central America. There is a coast to the Pacific Ocean which is 240 km long as well as a smaller Caribic coast to the Atlantic Ocean. To the north Guatemala borders Mexico, to the east Belize and to the southeast Honduras and El Salvador.
Guatemala primarily consists of mountainous highlands. It extends from the Pacific coast and its narrow hot and humid lowlands over the warm temperate highlands to the tropical low-lying area of the Golf of Honduras. In the north there is a hilly region with tropical rainforests on the peninsula of Yucatán. With the Tajumulco, which has an altitude of 4,220 meters, Guatemala has the largest volcano of Central America. Altogether Guatemala has 33 volcanoes of which three of them are considered as active.

Geographically, Mesoamerica is located between the Sinaloa River valley in northern Mexico and the Gulf of Fonseca south of El Salvador; it encompasses most of present-day Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and western Honduras, where great differences in altitude and rainfall result in numerous distinct climatic and ecological zones. Mesoamerica is culturally divided into two parts: central Mexico roughly west and north of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and the Maya region to the east and south.

Although volcanic hazard maps are now available at many hazardous volcanoes, volcanic risk maps are very rare and may offer some special advantages in Volcanic Hazard Communications efforts. They can be used to forecast the cost of volcanic activity, which may be helpful in securing budgeting for mitigation efforts. They may be used for planning mitigation expenditures, because sensitivity analysis of uncertainties in hazard zonation or recurrence intervals of various types of activity can be tested against economic and population data for cost effectiveness.
