INTRODUCTION Guatemala is known for its high and active volcanoes, for its impressive Mayan ruins and for its devastating earthquakes. A Spanish colony for almost 3 centuries, Guatemala became a republic in 1839, but has been plagued by civil wars since 1961. In 1996, the government signed a peace agreement formally ending the conflict. Location of Guatemala Guatemala lies below Mexico in Central America. It shares borders with El Salvador and Honduras to the east and with Mexico to the north and west. Belize borders it on the northeast. The Pacific Ocean lies to the south. Physical Map of Guatemala Guatemala's geography has frequently influenced its history. About two-thirds of the country's land area is mountainous. The rugged terrain has provided refuge to the indigenous people from Spanish conquest in the 16th century, while the fertile valleys produced fine coffees and other crops that dominated the nation's economy. Frequent volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and torrential rains have hampered the development of communication links.

GEOGRAPHIES OF
MAY 3-26, 2004 Wednesday, May 12 th , a group of 10 UNBC students and Dr. Catherine Nolin traveled to Guatemala City to begin a two-week human rights delegation-style tour of Guatemala. We visited various organizations, learning first hand of the oppression and resistance struggles that people in Guatemala face ... as a matter of course, as part of their daily fare. The first week was co-facilitated by Grahame Russell of Rights Action. The following summary of our first week is written by Grahame: It is increasingly obvious that a global and historical perspective is needed to understand the structural injustices against the majority population in a place like Guatemala—a "national" perspective is not sufficient. What is also needed is an activist vision and agenda aimed at building global alliances—people to people - to end local-to-global injustices ... One world, one solution.

Guatemala - Geography Guatemala is the northernmost country in Central America. It is bordered by the Pacific and the Caribbean, Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico and Belize. The 11 million people of Guatemala come from many diverse cultures, but the majority are descendents of the ancient Maya Culture and defiantly hold onto many of their traditions and native languages. The diverse landscape of towering mountains (over 33 volcanoes rising as high as 14,400feet), dense cloud forests, lowland jungles, expansive rainforests and crystal clear lakes and rivers are home to a bountiful array of flora and fauna. All of these factors make Guatemala a unique and interesting country to visit. Weather

I was twice in this city but I spent just a few hours each time (eating at a famous restaurant in the heart of the town). When I was a kid I went twice to a place named Safari Chapin where you can watch animals in a "free" enviroment and those where the times I visited Escuintla.

< BACK TO HISTORY CONTENTS The territorial dispute's origins lay in the eighteenth-century treaties in which Britain acceded to Spain's assertion of sovereignty while British settlers continued to occupy the sparsely settled and ill-defined area (see Colonial Rivalry Between Spain and Britain , this ch.). The 1786 Convention of London, which affirmed Spanish sovereignty was never renegotiated, but Spain never attempted to reclaim the area after 1798. Subsequent treaties between Britain and Spain failed to mention the British settlement. By the time Spain lost control of Mexico and Central America in 1821, Britain had extended its control over the area, albeit informally and unsystematically. By the 1830s, Britain regarded the entire territory between the Hondo River and Sarstoon River as British. The independent republics that emerged from the disintegrating Spanish Empire in the 1820s claimed that they had inherited Spain's sovereign rights in the area. Britain, however, never accepted such a doctrine. Based on this doctrine of inheritance, Mexico and Guatemala asserted claims to Belize. Mexico once claimed the portion of British Honduras north of the Sibun River but dropped the claim in a treaty with Britain in 1893. Since then, Mexico has stated that it would revive the claim only if Guatemala were successful in obtaining all or part of the nation. Still, Mexico was the first nation to recognize Belize as an independent country.

The Maya homeland, called Mesoamerica, spans five countries: Mexico Guatemala Belize Honduras , and El Salvador . There are now indications that the people we call the Maya had migrated from North America to the highlands of Guatemala perhaps as long ago as 2600 B.C., living an agricultural, village-based life. The culture of these Preclassic Maya owes much to the earlier civilization of the Olmec , which flourished ca. 1200 B.C.
By the time Maya civilization had reached its peak - the Classic period (A.D. 200-900) - the Maya were spread across an almost continuous territory of roughly 311,000 square kilometers (120,000 square miles), comprising three general areas:
    • The tropical rain forest of the lowlands, stretching from northwestern Honduras, through the region of Guatemala and into Belize and the Chiapas. This became the heart of Classic Maya civilization and included cities such as Palenque
    • The Guatemala highlands and the Pacific Coast, where Aztec influence in the early Classic period caused some differences in cultural development from the Central, or Lowlands, Maya.
