Adventures in Guatemala The colonial charm of Antigua is well-known to travelers, yet the true beauty of the country lies tucked away in the highlands. The Mayan communities have retained their traditions, languages, and culture. The vivid panoply of colors and designs in their clothing will leave you in awe. Our documentaries, photos, and travel tips are all you need to discover Guatemala by yourself. Photos of the Mayas From Tikal to the Altiplano: Ancient and Modern Mayan Cultures in Guatemala Guatemala has the richest ethnic diversity of all the countries of Central America. Eighty percent of the population is indigenous. Most groups are descendants of the Mayans and have preserved their traditional clothing, folklore and language. Mayan archeological sites are abundant. Some, like Tikal, are world famous, others still lay hidden in dense jungles waiting for explorers to discover their secrets.

Mayan Culture
The Maya civilization was one of the grandest in the history of the world and the reason for its collapse is still shrouded in mystery. The ancient Maya occupied a vast geographic area in Central and South America from around 2000 BC until 1500 AD. The Mayan culture extended to parts of what is now Mexico, Honduras, and El Salvador, and most of Guatemala and Belize. During the Classical Period which lasted from the third to the ninth century, Maya civilization built awe-inspiring temples, pyramids and cities and formed a complex social and political order. Many of the remnants in Tikal reveal the culture of this ancient civilization. The Mayan culture excelled in many different fields, and testaments of their achievements are found throughout the area. Today descendents of the old Maya, or the Indigenous as the are locally referred to, account for more than 50% of the Guatemalan population. Their present culture is vibrant and thriving, best shown by the many traditionally dressed woman and children seen along the streets in the entire country. Weaving is one of the outstanding Maya craft, an ancient art that has survived uninterrupted for centuries and is now becoming famous all over the world. The Maya also make baskets, pottery and wood carved of animals, saints and brightly-painted toys and chests. Chichicastenango hosts the traditional handicrafts market every Thursday and Sunday and a more typical Mayan market can be experienced every Saturday in Solola on the way to Lake Atitlan.

It is located in the tropical zone, and has a range of climates that vary according to the altitude. There are two seasons: the rainy months run from May to October, and the dry ones from November to April. The average temperature is 75 F, with small variations in the lowlands and in the highlands. North and Central America Luxury Vacation Packages Guatemala is a small country with a striking variety of topographic features. Nearly two-thirds of the country is mountainous and volcanic. Parallel to the Pacific lies the Sierra Madre mountain range, with peaks that rise to an elevation of up to 12,000 feet. 33 volcanoes dominate the landscape, and these, coupled with the lush tropical rain forests to the north, the fertile plains of the south and east, the beautiful lakes, and the wonderful rivers, make this a land of varied contrasts. To this rich array of contrasts, one must add a major contributing factor to Guatemala's unique brand of beauty: its wealth of traditions, and the strking colors and patterns of the weavings of the Mayans. Noted for its lush colors and intricate design, the cloth is made into blouses called "huipiles", sashes, skirts and headdresses. Every group or town has its own particular native costume. Woven by its women, usually on a stick loom, its patterns feature the traditional symbolism that identifies their history and ancient gods.

Newswatch LANGUAGES Last Updated: Friday, 16 September 2005, 11:08 GMT 12:08 UK E-mail this to a friend Printable version Country profile: Guatemala A country of striking features and a strong indigenous culture, Guatemala's natural beauty and powerful identity stand in stark contrast to its bloody past and troubled present.
Mountainous, heavily forested and dotted with Mayan ruins, lakes, volcanoes, orchids and exotic birds, Guatemala is one of the most beautiful countries in Central America. Its indigenous population, the Maya, make up about half of the population. Mayan languages are spoken alongside Spanish, the official tongue. Many Guatemalans are of mixed Amerindian-Hispanic origin. OVERVIEW
FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA Guatemala's beauty and strength of identity have not been accompanied by cohesion and prosperity. In 1996 the country emerged from a 36-year-long civil war which pitted leftist, mostly Mayan insurgents against the army, which - backed by the US - waged a vicious campaign to eliminate the guerrillas. More than 200,000 people - the vast majority of them civilians - were killed or disappeared.

I. U.S. Actions
  • On April 15, 1991, the U.S. took emergency action to impose import restrictions on pre-Columbian Maya archaeological artifacts from the Peten region of Guatemala. On September 29, 1997, the U.S. and Guatemala signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to impose import restrictions on pre-Columbian archaeological artifacts from throughout Guatemala. Protection for the Peten material continues without interruption. On September 29, 2002, the U.S. and Guatemala extended the U.S.-Guatemala MOU for five years.
II. Background
These U.S. actions are in response to requests from the Government of Guatemala under Article 9 of the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property. The import restrictions are intended to mitigate the results of extensive looting to meet the demands of U.S. and international trade in artifacts. The U.S. actions also further the aims of the 1994 Summit of the Americas action plan to enhance appreciation of indigenous cultures and cultural artifacts through the implementation of cultural property protection agreements.

THE ANCIENT MAYA Mysteries of a lost civilization The Maya of central America reached remarkable intellectual and artistic heights during the Classic period of their great civilization, between around AD 250 and 900. They built huge temples and pyramids, inscribed stone monuments, made major advances in mathematics and astronomy, and developed complex hieroglyphic scripts. But their great civilization was doomed to undergo a mysterious collapse that would leave their mighty temples and pyramids abandoned.... Tikal
During the Classic period of the Maya civilization, the great city of Tikal thrived in dense lowland jungle of what is now part of Guatemala. In the ceremonial heart of the city were palaces and lofty pyramids topped by temples. The Tikal pyramids include the highest known structure built in the Americas before the arrival of Europeans. Around AD 900, Tikal declined as Maya civilization in the region suffered the mysterious collapse that marked the end of their Classic period.
Temple I at Tikal - the Temple of the Great Jaguar - sits on a towering pyramid built over the tomb of King Hasaw Chan K'awil.
