2005 Programs in Guatemala
Global Youth Connect launched its Guatemala program in the fall of 2004 and is currently organizing a series of human rights delegations to Guatemala in an effort to explore the root causes of the country's violent conflict and how this legacy of violence is impacting Guatemala and its people. Through meetings with local human rights defenders, government representatives, youth and local communities, service projects and interactive cross-cultural workshops, we hope to identify the ways in which we can help raise awareness on the issues and provide collaborative support to Guatemalans who are already working to create change.
Partnership with Nuestros Derechos Global Youth Connect is working in close collaboration with Nuestros Derechos a Guatemalan organization dedicated to defending the rights of street children and helping them get off the street. As our local project coordinator, Nuestros Derechos assists Global Youth Connect in planning and managing the delegation activities. We are also providing other support to Nuestros Derechos as needed by connecting them with potential volunteers, helping them access funding sources, and making sure that the participants in our delegations have an opportunity to learn about and participate in their work with street kids. HOME: POPULATION ISSUES: Culture Overview ... Publications Lessons from the Field Guatemala Finding Common Ground—and Building on It The passage of a groundbreaking new law in Guatemala that promotes better health for women and their families was the product of a year and a half of negotiations and consensus-building among a wide range of stakeholders, facilitated by UNFPA. WHAT WORKS? Lessons from Guatemala
  • Knowing the opposition and understanding its views can be key to successful negotiations. Analyse the rationale on which it bases its arguments and develop a logical response. Developing a different advocacy strategy for each stakeholder is often the most effective way to achieve consensus. Mistrust can often be dispelled through a transparent process of consultation and negotiation in which all parties have full access to information. Confidence can be promoted by following through on every commitment. In culturally complex environments, evidence-based data on issues of common concern can help to bring stakeholders together. Follow up with advocacy on these issues. Ownership of programme objectives can be achieved by involving as many actors as possible in the process.

By Celina Zubieta, IPS, 10 March 1999. Nearly one-third of the 11.6 million people of Guatemala cannot read or write, mostly women and people living in rural areas. The peace accords signed with guerrillas in 1996 established goals for the reduction of illiteracy, a 50 percent increase in spending for education by the year 2000, established mandatory primary education for the first three grades, and bi-lingual education in rural areas.

Learn Spanish in Guatemala
The Main Square, Antigua
Why learn Spanish in Guatemala?
Guatemala is a beautiful country, with a rich culture heritage and friendly locals. Guatemala is also far cheaper to live in than most neighbouring countries, making it a very attractive location in which to learn Spanish. Over 5,000 foreign students per year choose to study Spanish in Guatemala. Most students who decide on learning Spanish in Guatemala choose to study in the historic city of Antigua, for its many attractions, several of which are explained below.

Antigua, Guatemala
Antigua is where most foreign students choose to learn Spanish in Guatemala. This is a beautiful small city, full of magnificent Spanish colonial architecture, much of it dating back over 500 years. The people of Antigua are famous for their warmth and hospitality, always a bonus to anyone learning a foreign language. Learning Spanish is easier here, because people are happy to stop and talk to you, the way of life is much more informal and welcoming.

Gay Pride 2000, Guatemala. Guatemala Making An Oasis
In A Culture of Violence by Ana Simo OCTOBER 23, 2000 The metaphorical punishment of the presumably genocidal general with anal sex translates into very real violence against anyone perceived as queer. This summer, in two separate incidents, two male "transvestite" sex workers, Astrid La Fontaine and Beverly Lineth, were murdered in front of witnesses. The Guatemalan police, which routinely terrorizes "transvestite" sex workers, is not interested in investigating the murders. In Guatemala, as elsewhere in Central America, male "transvestite" prostitution is huge, often a consequence of the prostitute's abject poverty and homo-shame, and the john's rabid homophobia. Males who foam at the mouth when asked if they're gay, nevertheless think it's okay to have sex with a male cross-dresser or a transgender woman: after all, only the "receiver" is a dirty homo.

Recommendations IV. Measures to foster a cultur e of mutual respect and observance of human rights IV.1. Culture of mutual respect As reflected in the previous chapters of the Report, a culture of violence has developed in Guatemala, which has resulted in mistrust and a lack of respect among its people. This clearly needs to be transformed into a culture of tolerance and mutual respect. The CEH believes that the Peace Accords are a basic foundation for the development of peaceful and tolerant relations between the various sectors of Guatemalan society. Consequently, the knowledge and assimilation of the past, the knowledge of the causes and the scope of the uncontrolled violence and, likewise, of the basic principles of respect for human rights, of the mechanisms for their defence and the peaceful solution of disputes are essential elements for the consolidation of a peaceful future. The CEH believes that to achieve national harmony and reconciliation, a concerted effort at cultural change is required and that this can only be contemplated through an active policy of education for peace.

OTHER AMERICAS
Adventures in Mexico: Photography, Language, and Culture.
Welcome to Other Americas - At first glance, it may appear that we offer photography workshops... or that we are an adventure tour company... or that we are an educational program on the language and culture of Mexico. In fact we are all of these things rolled into one unique kind of travel experience. ADVENTURE with us means off-the-road travel to parts of Mexico (and Texas this year) that you could not expect to find or explore on your own. PHOTOGRAPHY means hands-on photography instruction and critiques by internationally recognized photographers, who are also enthusiastic fellow travelers. LANGUAGE is an opportunity to study Spanish and/or Mexican history and culture. All this made even more enjoyable by the comfortable setting of first-rate inns, excellent meals and beautiful environments. From our home-base, the group explores surrounding areas by mini-van or jeep. Schedules for each day are flexible, with a choice of activities and/or unscheduled time for photographers and non-photographers alike. In 1979, I took a group of students to Mexico, made a lot of photographs myself, and just fell in love with the country and its people. MEXICO is such a contrast to our country, so profoundly different in its cultural values; its landscape is so varied, mysterious, and beautiful. There are many parts of Mexico that I know intimately now. Certain towns and villages, certain roads and routes that I have found in my 15 years of poking around.
