A Culture Unraveling: Matthew Looper On Guatemala’s Vanishing Textile Arts
Woman weaving on a backstrap loom in Concepción,
Chiquirichapa, Guatemala. (photo Matthew Looper) E.M. Forster once wrote that art makes us feel small in the right way, and anyone who has ever studied the dazzling hues and intricate patterns of a Guatemalan textile surely knows what he meant. Even the simplest zig-zag designs practically pulsate, the colors are so intensely rich, and the more complicated patterns featuring birds and animals truly thrill the eye. For Chico State art professor Matthew Looper, in 1993 a young graduate student newly arrived in Guatemala to document carved monuments, the textiles were a revelation. "I was totally amazed by them," he said, "and began collecting them immediately." Looper came to this passion by a rather circuitous route. "My dad and my brothers were all science people," he said during a recent interview, "and I assumed I'd be a science person too. At Duke, my specialty was molecular biology. But my sister was really interested in French and took art history classes, and to be able to talk to her I took some humanities and art classes." Once the art door opened for him, it never closed. Though he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in botany, course work in pre-Columbian art, begun at Duke, drew him to the University of Texas at Austin for graduate studies. There he came under the compelling influence of the famous Mayanist Linda Schele, one of the first researchers to launch a serious investigation of Mayan glyphs and what they revealed about the culture and history of the people who carved them. Looper earned a Fulbright as well as a National Science Foundation grant to travel to Quiriguá, Guatemala, to do "a comprehensive political history" of the site, but his attraction to indigenous textiles, kindled as soon as he arrived, meant that he began investigating their origins and history as well.

History
The earliest Maya civilizations began to emerge in the highlands of Guatemala by as early as 2000 BC. Bustling city-states grew, and trading networks covered large areas of what is now Central America and Mexico. By AD 250, the Early Classic Period, great temple cities of pyramids and plazas rose in the Guatemalan highlands. In addition to the notable architecture, the Maya also developed a complex calendar, a hieroglyphic writing system, and an impressive body of scientific knowledge. The Maya civilization was already somewhat fragmented when Europeans arrived in the early 1500's, and the weak and divided Maya were easily conquered by the Spaniards. By 1528 Pedro de Alvarado had established Spanish rule over the region, and those of native blood descended to the bottom of the new social hierarchy. The lands were carved up into large estates and the people ruthlessly exploited by the new landowners.

Canadian culture in the Bravissimo and Paiz Festivals in Guatemala
Once again, Canada shone in the two world-renown international Festivals in Guatemala: Bravissimo and Paiz, organized respectively by the Francisco Marroquín Centre of Arts and the Paiz Foundation. The long and excellent relation developed with these two prime promoters of culture in Guatemala has over many years allowed for the participation of some of Canada`s greatest talents and the year 2004-5 was not an exception. The Francisco Marroquin Centre of Arts had chosen for its 2004 season to honour the memory of the great Guatemalan musician and orchestra director Ricardo del Carmen, who died shortly after having participated in the final concert of the 2003 season, by taking up the greatest works of Del Carmen`s favourite classical composer, the great Beethoven. And Canada featured prominently in this important initiative. First came pianist Stephen Ham gave an outstanding concert in the Organization's main auditorium, playing Mozart, Liszt and other classical masters, to demonstrate yet again the international calibre of Canada`s artists. Stephen Ham had two very successful performances in Guatemala: one at the Official Residence on May 4 and one at the Organization's main auditorium on May 5. But in truth, the concert that was to present the greatest hommage to the maestro del Carmen would be the closing concert of the Beethovenian Cycle with the Concert for Piano and Orchestra No.1 , a piece that the maestro had always highlighted as Beethoven's masterpiece, at least in his view. And who else to give the special touch to this piece and commemorative act than the great Canadian violinist Laurence Kayaleh, she who had inspired the selection of the season`s theme when, upon completing the concert that had united her with the Maestro in 2003, played a few notes of the maestro`s favourite and the latter expressed the wish to play the piece with her before his Guatemalan compatriots.

WHERE THESE STORIES COME FROM These animal stories are from Tales and Legends of the Q'anjob'al Maya There may be as many as 10,000 Q'anjob'al Maya, descendants of those who built the greatest ancient civilization of Central America, scattered throughout the United States and Canada, especially in Southern California and Florida, refugees from the terror in Guatemala. who is a principal figure in Yax:Te' Press says: "I collected these tales from my friend don Pedro Miguel Say, a Q'anjob'al Maya from Guatemala, who presently resides in Los Angeles. You might say he's an elder, although we are the same age, 70. Young people simply do not know the stories, or at least are not able to tell them. I translated the tales from Q'anjob'al Maya into Spanish and English. A trilingual edition of the tales was first published by the Mayan self-help organization IXIM in Los Angeles, but this volume has long been out of print. I am now planning to get out a bilingual (Q'anjob'al-Spanish) edition for distribution primarily in Guatemala and in the refugee camps in Mexico, and have several other such collections in the works. The QUETZAL:
A male Quetzal at rest (see the tail) and in flight
The Quetzal is a bird which is found in the montane rain forests of Central America. The future of the Quetzal is certain extinction, unless something is done now to protect its habitat.
Worth mentioning is the description of a Quetzal by Roger Tory Peterson and Edward Chalif in their FIELD GUIDE TO THE BIRDS OF MEXICO. "The most spectacular bird in the New World." The male is "intense emerald and golden green with red belly and white undertail" The body measures about fifteen inches but the tail, rich in iridescent blues and greens above and subtle white below, can extend as much as thirty inches. "
To watch this bird fly with its tail undulating behind is to understand why it is called the Resplendent Quetzal. The Quetzal is also the most sacred symbol of the highly advanced Mesoamerican civilization, the Mayas, whose descendants are eighty percent of the present day inhabitants of Guatemala and the neighboring Mexican states of Yucatan, Quintano Roo, and Chiapas. To the ancient Mayas the Quetzal symbolized freedom and wealth. Freedom, because a Quetzal will die in captivity; wealth, because the Mayas were traders, and quetzal feathers along with jade were their most sought after treasures. These were traded by the Mayas as far north as the central valley of Mexico and as far south as the Empire of the Incas (over three thousand miles) an area that is about eight times the size of their home territory.

David hopes others will follow his example At the age of 47, David Mendez Castro, an evangelical pastor with three grown-up children, unexpectedly found himself father of a fourth.
Just over a year after his son's birth, he took a decision which for many in his position would be unthinkable. He had a vasectomy. "I had a vasectomy for various reasons. Children cost money and we didn't want that extra burden. Also, my wife is young, so it was convenient for me," he explained. Spreading the Gospel David's decision was a personal one, but he has decided to use his experiences to educate others in his community - and it hasn't been easy for him. "A lot of people have been critical of me. "Some think I am damaging the Church's reputation, but whatever people think, it's been worth it because I've seen lots of changes and families are thanking me".
