People of Guatemala Guatemala's population, the largest in any Central American country, is almost evenly divided between Native Americans and ladinos, but also includes small groups descended from African and European immigrants. Within the population are widely varied ways of life, differing between ladinos and indigenous people, between urban and rural residents, between the more affluent and the very poor. The predominant religion is Roman Catholicism, into which many indigenous Guatemalans have incorporated traditional forms of worship. An estimated 40% and 1% of the population practices Protestantism and traditional Mayan religions, respectively. Flag of Guatemala Guatemala's flag contains three equal vertical bands of light blue (hoist side), white, and light blue with the coat of arms centered in the white band; the coat of arms includes a green and red quetzal (the national bird) and a scroll bearing the inscription LIBERTAD 15 DE SEPTIEMBRE DE 1821 (the original date of independence from Spain) all superimposed on a pair of crossed rifles and a pair of crossed swords and framed by a wreath.
Please click here to view the Flag of Guatemala
Economy of Guatemala The Economy of Guatemala is agriculture based. Two-thirds of its exports are agricultural products and half of the labor force is involved in this sector. Coffee, sugar, and bananas are the main products.

Antigua - Culture M any people say that La Antigua is the most beautiful city in the world. Others call it the loveliest Spanish Colonial Town in the world. This city, miraculously restored, contains some of the finest examples of Spanish Colonial art and architecture in the Americas: cathedrals, convents, plazas and residences from the 16 th and 17 th centuries.
Antigua, included in UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1979, was one of the first planned colonial cities in the New World. Today there are beautiful restaurants, art galleries, lively bars, and a new theater and library. A multicultural, multilingual pueblo, it is also an authentic working Guatemalan town.
All of Guatemala is a naturalist's paradise. From Antigua, you can raft down unspoiled rivers and climb the volcanoes that shaded Maya Civilization. A day-trip will take you deeper into Maya life; you can fly to the stunning ruins of Tikal in the morning and be back in Antigua in time for cocktails.
From your base in Antigua you can play golf on a championship course or snag a sailfish or you can just relax and soak in the rich ambiance that has made Antigua famous.

Guatemala City - Culture
Guatemala City dominates the cultural life of the country. It is the seat of the principal faculties of the San Carlos University of Guatemala (established 1676); the major institutions for artistic, commercial, vocational, and military education; the Society of Geography and History; and several important museums. Public buildings of note include the National Palace, the post office, police headquarters, the National Archives, the National Archaeological Museum (with its rare collection of Mayan artifacts), the National Library, and the modern cluster of buildings around the new city hall. Among the major religious structures are the cathedral (1815) and the churches of San Francisco, Santo Domingo (famous throughout Central America for its Holy Week procession), and La Merced (colonial but rebuilt after 1917). Other points of interest include the remarkable concrete relief map of the nation in Minerva Park, the archaeological and historical museums, the colonial aqueduct, the central market, and Olympic City, built for the Central American Olympic Games of 1950. In the environs of Guatemala City are the villages of Chinautla, famous for hand-formed pottery, Mixco, which supplies the capital with fruits and vegetables, and the Indian towns of San Pedro and San Juan Sacatepequez, all of which suffered extensive damage in the earthquake of 1976.

49. GUATEMALAN MAYA CULTURE
guatemala is a showcase of natural history and dramatic landscapes, While Spanish and Indian cultures integrate into the country s mestizaje ,
http://www.quetzalnet.com/MayaCulture.html
Our Living Maya Culture The World of the Maya has many faces: some of them ancient as found carved on towering temples, other as modern as those of the people who live in Guatemala today. They are the descendants of a mighty Maya people whose customs and traditions are still part of the fabric of Guatemalan life.
While Spanish and Indian cultures integrate into the country's "mestizaje", the purest of the Maya influences can be found in both the performing and design arts. The handicraft of textiles, in particular, is purely Mayan and a wonderfully colorful, part of the everyday dress.
KAQCHIQUEL CULTURE
Panajachel
The main attraction of this village, located about two miles from Panajachel, is the colorful costumes worn by its inhabitants. The women's dress consists of three pieces, all woven on a backstrap loom. The "huipil" (the Indian lady's traditional blouse) has colorful embroidered geometric patterns which are repeated, in the design of the men's trousers.
Located five miles from Panajachel, the village of San Antonio Palopó can be reached by either boat or car. The inhabitants, of Cakchiquel origin, are mainly involved in agriculture and the production of "maguey" mats and fiber goods which are woven from reeds harvested directly from the lake.

50. GUATEMALAN MAYA ARCHEOLOGY
The development of the Maya culture covers three periods (1) The most complete collection of archeological objects of the guatemala Mayan culture.
http://www.quetzalnet.com/Archeology.html
MAYA ARCHEOLOGY Today, we still call this "El Mundo Maya" - the World of the Maya - who lived not only in Guatemala, but in Belize, Mexico, Honduras and El Salvador.
The development of the Maya culture covers three periods: (1) Pre-classic from 2000 BC to 300 AD, (2) Classic from 300 to 900 AD, and (3) Post-classic from 900 to 1500 AD.
The sciences of mathematics, astronomy, agriculture and architecture were astutely developed by the Maya who also made great strides in the complex areas of socio-politics and economics. The hieroglyphics they developed to convey their thoughts have not yet been totally deciphered and are found in their codex, stelae and monuments as well as in the evolution of their ethical, aesthetic and religious thinking.
Many of the Indian dialects, presently spoken by the different ethnic groups in Guatemala, have a common linguistic root: the Maya.
TIKAL NATIONAL PARK
Step Back In Time....visit Hotel Camino Real Tikal
The park covers 222 square miles amidst the thick, tropical jungle of El Petén. Created in 1958, UNESCO declared the park a "Monument of the World's Heritage" in 1979. It is regarded ad one of the most important cultural and natural reserves in the world. The easiest access to the park is by air. It is just a 20-minute flight from Guatemala City to the airport of Santa Elena. From there you can reach Tikal in 45 minutes over an excellent highway.
There are more than 4,000 structures or constructions in Tikal. The oldest date from the Pre-classic period (800 BC), and the most recent from the Post-classic period (900 AD). It was during this period that the Maya attained their artistic, architectural, mathematic, agricultural and commercial heights.

Guatemala is the northernmost country of Central America. It has borders to the north and west with Mexico, to the east with Belize, Honduras and El Salvador and benefits from beaches both on the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. At only 42,042 square miles, about the size of Tennessee, Guatemala is a relatively small country but it has a very diverse topography, which in turn contributes to many different microclimates, yet the country never suffers any extreme temperatures. Guatemala has about 11 million inhabitants, of whom 55% are descendants of the Mayas. The official language is Spanish, but 23 indigenous languages are spoken throughout the countryside. The Mayan Civilization The legacy of the Mayan civilization and the colonial period, as well as its living cultures (customs and traditions), represent the country's main attractions. The Mayas developed a very complex social, political, scientific and artistic organization. They invented a calendar as accurate as the Gregorian calendar, and their architecture featured huge pyramids with huge staircases. They were the creators of hieroglyphic writing, so that it is possible today to interpret their legacy despite the passing of the centuries.

The Maya civilization flourished in Guatemala and surrounding regions during the first millennium A.D. After almost three centuries as a Spanish colony, Guatemala won its independence in 1821. During the second half of the 20th century, it experienced a variety of military and civilian governments as well as a 36-year guerrilla war.
In 1996, the government signed a peace agreement formally ending the conflict, which had led to the death of more than 100 000 people and had created some 1 million refugees.

Guatemala is, culturally, one of the most diversified societies in Latin America. It is a multicultural, multilingual and multiethnic nation formed of Mayan, "Ladina", Spanish, European, Asian, Garifuna and Xinca Cultures. In this Era of Peace and Democracy, based on the "Guatemalan Accords of Long and Lasting Peace", it is recognized that our country is a merger of cultural values, philosophies, scientific and technological knowledge. Guatemala has a historical collective memory, of millenary cultures. The Mayan society was one of the most advanced Precolombine cultures in the World; the Garifuna culture, which is abundant in colorful expressions and very warm people; and the Xincas, who are highly spiritual. Each of these ways of seeing life and all its facets, combined with the influence of the Western World brought in by the Europeans, as well as the mystic ways of the Asians, make Guatemala a nation with a bright future towards prosperity and peace. Besides Spanish, which traditionally was considered the official language, there are 2

Following Casa Santa Domingo, we are off to another religious site: the Capuchinas Monastery. There, the students are able to get a feel for what life in a Guatemalan convent was like centuries ago. And there, too, they're able to continue to enjoy more of the Guatemalan sun.
