Guam. CIA World Factbook Guam Guam is the largest and southernmost island in the Marianas Archipelago. The island is sharply divided into a northern coralline limestone plateau and a southern chain of volcanic hills. Today Guam is an unincorporated, organized territory of the United States. The people of Guam have been U.S. citizens since 1950. They have been represented in the U.S. Congress since 1973 by a nonvoting delegate, but do not participate in presidential elections. Guam was probably visited by the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan (sailing for Spain) in 1521. The island was formally claimed by Spain in 1565, and its people were forced into submission and conversion to Roman Catholicism, beginning in 1668. After the Spanish-American War of 1898, Spain ceded Guam to the United States. From 1899 to 1949, the U.S. Navy administered Guam, except during 1941–44, when Japanese forces seized and occupied the island. Guam was liberated by American military forces in the summer of 1944. Guam's economy is based on two main sources of revenue: tourism and U.S. military spending (U.S. naval and air force bases occupy one-third of the land on Guam).

The southern part of the island is mountainous, rising on Mt. Lamlam to 1,332 ft (406 m). Hag¥t±a (Aga±a), on the central W coast, is the seat of government, and Apra Harbor, a large U.S. naval base, is nearby. Andersen Air Force Base is in the north. The interior of the island is dense jungle; most of the villages are on the coast. Guamanians are U.S. citizens but cannot vote in U.S. elections. Guam's permanent inhabitants are predominantly of native Chamorro stock (37%) or Filipino descent (26%); the rest of the population mainly consists of roughly equal numbers of other Pacific Islanders, Caucasians, and other persons of Asian descent. The people are overwhelmingly Roman Catholic and speak English, Chamorro, and Japanese; English and Chamorro are official languages. Efforts to preserve the Chamorro language began in the 1990s. Some one fourth of the population consists of U.S. military personnel and their dependents.

    Geography
Guam's Place in the World People Culture Religion ... Community Service From the air, Guam looks like it was pushed up out of the sea. Geologists say the island was formed millions of years ago, when a pair of volcanoes sank beneath the ocean and left behind two separate chunks of land. The lava remains of the southern volcano, the younger of the two, eventually fused with the older, northern crater, whose limestone top had formed from an extensive coral polyp community during a long period underwater. Guam is shaped like a footprint and is 30 miles long, stretching from Ritidian Point in the north to the village of Merizo in the south. The widest point, between Orote Point and Ylig Point, is about 12 miles across; the island's narrowest point is about four miles. A close scientific examination of Guam reveals four main physical divisions - the northern limestone plateau, the dissected volcanic plateau in the south, the south-central basin area and the fringing reef areas of the coastal lowlands.
