    Geography and Geographical Features
Reportedly, the physical beauty of the region fascinated the first Europeans who traveled to the Caribbean. These Spaniards in Columbus' ships described the Caribbean as green and fertile, cooled by the trade winds, with a climate of `perpetual spring'. The lush vegetation, types of fruits and the flora and fauna were portrayed with great enthusiasm. The Caribbean region, located in the tropics, extends in a broad arc of over 4000 km from the Bahamas in the north to Guyana and Suriname in the south. The region also includes, based on historical factors, Belize which is in Central America bordering Mexico and Guatemala. The countries are widely different in physical and population size as well as landforms and geology. Three marine geographical features, often intermixed, are evident in the sweep of the Caribbean archipelago and in the mainland territories. There is first an outer ring of mainly coral islands with white sand beaches from The Bahamas, to the Turks and Caicos, the Cayman Islands and embracing parts of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the eastern parts of Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Lucia, the Grenadines, parts of Grenada, Tobago and Barbados. The second inner ring of more volcanic islands, with black sands, includes the islands of the Greater Antilles - Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. The inner ring also includes St. Kitts, the western parts of Guadeloupe, Dominica, parts of St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and parts of Grenada. The third distinct feature is the alluvial coast of Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana (Cayenne) on the South American mainland between the vast estuaries of the Orinoco and the Amazon.

    Geographical situation
In the years before slavery abolition, a great number of slaves were freed and in 1835 three sugar refineries, 18 cotton manufactures and 8 food processing manufactures were property of the liberated. At the end of 1837, the first municipal institutions were set up, nevertheless excluding the freed slaves from the electoral rolls. Neither the establishment of the Republic, nor the abolition of slavery in 1848 changed these facts and under the "Second Empire" the municipal council was nominated by the governor. Sugar cane farming became more and more important in the region, where cotton farming was almost abandonned. The biggest estate was Plantation Sainte Marthe, whose owners, the Pauvert family, also were of great political influence in the municipality.

Back to September Index Guadeloupe by Paul Dacher We visited Guadeloupe in March 1995. This was our second trip to the island, our first being in 1993. This is the first time we have made a return trip to a Caribbean island. We previously visited Barbados and St. Martin. So, why did we decide to return? There are three things which attract us to this island. First, it is somewhat off the American tourist track. Not too many Americans visit Guadeloupe; indeed, there are only two American Airlines flights per day out of San Juan, using ATR turboprop aircraft. Tourists come primarily from France, although we saw a few more Americans on our second trip. The island is not dedicated to tourism. Industry is small, with many sugar and banana plantations, and distilleries. The second "attraction" is Guadeloupe's geography. The island is actually two islands connected by a bridge. The western island, Basse Terre, is higher in altitude and has an active (though sort of dormant you can smell it) volcano. The relatively high elevation of the west makes for a very lush, tropical environment. However, Grande Terre, the eastern island, is in a rain shadow. It is much drier, with more desert-type vegetation. The east and north coasts are quite rugged, with the Atlantic Ocean crashing in. The geography of Guadeloupe encourages tourists to explore the island. Therefore, unless you are at the Club Med or similar establishment which run tours around the island, you must rent a car if you want to get around. The roads are good, reflecting the importance of commerce to the island (as well as the availability of aid money from the European Union). They contrast sharply with the roads on St. Martin, which were terrible when we visited in 1991.

    History
View from Guadeloupe Guadeloupe was populated from 300 BC by the Arawak Amerindians, who fished and developed agriculture on the island. It was next inhabited by the Caribs , who pushed out most of the Arawak in the 8th century , and who renamed the island "Karukera" or the "Island of beautiful waters". During his second trip to America Christopher Columbus became the first European to land on Guadeloupe on 14 November . He called it Santa Mara de Guadalupe de Extremadura , after the image of the Virgin Mary venerated at the Spanish monastery of Villuercas , in Guadalupe, Extremadura

D steeped in unparalleled natural beauty, a rich Creole culture, and the friendliest people in the World.
Because of its mountainous terrain, Dominica remained in the hands of the Caribs longer than any of the other Leeward and Windward islands; although Britain and France had agreed to this arrangement in 1748, France broke the treaty and claimed Dominica. In 1763 Britain won Dominica, but the French recaptured it in 1778 and again by the British in 1783. Finally, in 1805 France sold Dominica to England for 12,000 British pounds and handed it over after first burning down the capital Roseau. From its towering 5000 feet peaks to its gushing waterfalls, hundreds of flowing rivers, azure waters of the sea, and black and white sandy beaches, Dominica offers a unique and diverse experience to all who visits its shores.
