From the staff at ClassBrain
The tradition of Groundhog Day originates on Candlemas Day. On this day, clergy blessed and distributed candles for the long, cold winter. Germans added to this tradition by designating the hedgehog as the official means by which the weather was predicted. If it came out and saw it's shadow, then you could expect six more weeks of winter. If it didn't, you could expect an early spring.
When Germans came to America and settled in Pennsylvania, they brought this tradition with them. However, there were no hedgehogs in Pennsylvania, only groundhogs. So the groundhog became the official prognosticator of the winter season.

    Groundhog Day
Groundhog Day Old Groundhog stretched in his leafy bed.
He turned over slowly and then he said,
"I wonder if spring is on the way,
I'll go and check the weather today.
If I see my shadow between eleven and noon,
I then will know that I'm out too soon.
I'll crawl back in bed for six weeks more,
Pull up the warm covers and snore and snore.
But if no shadow gives me a scare,
I know that spring is in the air,
I'll wake my friends and wish them cheer, With glorious news that spring is here." The Second of February There's only the day the whole long year, That I hope and pray the sun won't appear. The second of February, you all know, The groundhog goes searching for his shadow. If he should find it, the story is told, We'll have six more weeks of winter's cold. But if it is cloudy, his shadow's not there, There'll soon be warm weather and days will be fair. So please, Mr. Sun, for just this one day. Find a big dark cloud - and stay away! http://www.socialstudiesforkids.com/articles/holidays/groundhogday.htm
Groundhog Day Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, is the home of Punxsutawney Phil, the most famous of the furry weather forecasters who amble forth from their holes every February 2 to predict just how much more winter is in store for the shivering folks of the United States. This tiny town is not so much hustle and bustle the rest of the year; but in early February and in the few months leading up to that time, Punxsutawney resembles a metropolis. And on February 2, affectionately named Groundhog Day, leaders of the community gather on Gobbler's Knob to consult with Phil, who crawls out of his hole (or sometimes has to be dragged out), who either sees his shadow or he doesn't, depending on what the community leaders "understand" Phil to say. As the tradition goes, if Phil sees his shadow, that means that winter is still hanging around, for another six weeks; if Phil doesn't see his shadow, the legend says, why then spring is just around the corner. No one is for sure just when this tradition began. It is first mentioned in the 18th Century by the Pennsylvania Dutch, possibly in conjunction with the celebration of Candlemas, which occurred halfway between the first day of winter and the first day of spring. And although the dates are not the same, the belief that the weather on Candlemas determined how soon spring would come was translated to the groundhog, or woodchuck, who was a hibernating animal who usually chose early February to end his hibernation, at least temporarily.Nowadays, it doesn't matter what Phil "says" or whether he is even right. It's all an excuse to get together and celebrate a "holiday" and exposure for the small, otherwise ordinary town of Punxsutawney.

    Groundhog Day 2002 Report
184 jugglers registered for the 24th annual Groundhog Day Jugglers Festival, topping last year's registration by over 50. Records show that folks came from New York, Florida, Kentucky, Mississipi, Alabama and Tennessee. The gym did not seem unusually crowded, which indicates that the large number of registrations probably reflects a larger proportion of attendees registering, rather than more jugglers at the festival.
The gym stayed open until 11 pm Friday night. The supplemental lighting system kept everyone seeing well during the evening, with many big passing patterns and exuberant greetings in evidence. The T-shirt emblem was picked from a field of 5 designs and featured a picture of a groundhog in a wizard's cap with the slogan "Lord of the clubs, balls, and Rings". Lee Downing gets credit for this sell-out design. Long-time AJA members Rick and L.J. Purtee surprised us by showing up for the festival from their new home in Seattle, Washington.

Groundhog Day The Movie, Buddhism and Me
Groundhog Day Blog Comments by Paul Schindler
Feb. 15, 1999 By the way, I'm an old-school guy, who believes you say a lot about yourself by the film you identify as your favorite. For years, I went with the trite (and Pauline Kael) and said Citizen Kane. Now, Citizen Kane is a very good film. But a few years back I sat down and asked myself, "What film has brought me more consistent entertainment than any other I have seen in recent years? If it's a comedy, is it chock-full of real laughs that last? If it is a drama, does it move me?" And the answer was: Groundhog Day with Bill Murray and Andie McDowell. If you haven't seen it, rent it (or buy it) and watch it. If you have seen it before, see it again. It is a comic masterpiece. I laugh out loud every time I see it. Feb. 14, 2000 My Favorite Movie, Redux With Groundhog Day just behind us and Valentine's Day just ahead, it is time to continue a Valentine's Day tradition of this column and remind everyone to go out and rent my personal favorite film of all time, the romantic comedy Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. I picked this film a few years back, when I got tired of aping Pauline Kael by always saying that Citizen Kane was the best movie of all time. I approached the process with trepidation and careful thought. I think the answer to the question "What is your favorite movie" says a lot about you, both obvious and unobvious.

    Groundhogs Day
Wednesday, February 2, 2000 Groundhogs Day is my favorite holiday. There's no pressure, you don't have to buy presents, send cards, pick out flowers, call people, get mass e-mails from the president of the University, overeat. Plus it represents a turning point. Winter isn't over, but it must be coming to an end. Even if he sees his shadow, it's only six more weeks! The days are markedly longer, the snow is starting to melt, the Cubs report to Spring Training in less than two weeks, and they're predicting that tomorrow the temperature will actually climb above freezing. A gripe: I don't see why Punxsutawney Phil affects the whole country. I have nothing against Mr. Phil personally, but each region of the country should have its own groundhog. (Later) I spoke too soon. The Mayor of Champaign is our groundhog. Training Experts again . People who go into teaching are extraordinary people. They devote their lives giving their gift of knowledge and love of learning. They are vastly underpaid and under appreciated in our country. At Big Universities, many of the people who teach are at the university because of their research talent. They may not care about teaching. (Lots do care, especially the younger people.) The may hate teaching. Yet they have something to offer. The training they need may not be the same that motivated teachers need.
