There was a "cake" idea in Family Fun a few years back. Make a cake and
light a candle for each month of the year- have a little candle lighting ceremony
where each month is named while the candle is lit. Then together blow out
"the old year". NEW YEAR POEM
Distribute horns, bells, gongs, pot lids and spoons, noisemakers etc. Blow a horn, bang a gong (blow a horn, bang a gong)
The year is almost gone!
Bang a pan, shout horray (bang lids together, shout)
The brand-new year comes today!
Happy New Year, everyone (shout and make a racket)! NEW YEAR'S SONGS Ring The Bells (Sung to Row Row Row Your Boat) (Give each child a set of bells) Ring ring ring the bells Ring them loud and clear Let's tell everyone around That the New Year is here!! Groundhog Day
I feel like this tradition is getting a little stale. Doesn't everyone think it's time to update the principles of Groundhog Day for the Bush era ? Some brainstorms:
1. Rather than looking to see whether the groundhog has actually seen his shadow or not, just decide which outcome you prefer, and announce that.
2. Bless the groundhog, then bless it again by subjecting it to "the ultimate punishment."
3. Remove groundhog from its burrow in oak stump; check to determine groundhog's values; if groundhog is found to have been recruited into the gay lifestyle, bless, then execute.
4. If weather is foul or crowd is in a bad mood, call the groundhog a faggot, then blow it away with assault rifle.
5. Remove groundhog from stump, declaring that it, like all God's creatures, yearns for freedom. Bless, execute.
Any other ideas?

While outside, explain that we can measure the heights of tall trees and buildings, even each other, by measuring our shadows. First, have them measure the shadow of a yard-stick. It will be 9 feet long, or three times as long as the stick itself. It will be the same for everything they measure: the shadow will be three times as long as the object. For instance, if a flagpole's shadow is 60 feet long, then the flagpole itself is 20 feet long. They'll enjoy doing this with each other, as well. Teach the song, "Me and My Shadow" (lyrics: Billy Rose; music: Al Jolson and Dave Dryer), and Robert Louis Stevenson's poem, "My Shadow." Have the children put on a shadow play: tape cut-out shapes of people and animals onto barbecue sticks and have the children hold their sticks in front of a flashlight. (The closer the light, the larger the shadow.)

Dave Winer notes that Doc's solution works Now Dave's "experience" of getting audio from his portable device through his car stereo is much better. A little knowledge makes a difference. 10:23 PM War of the Worlds Excellent. Bravo, Mr. Spielberg! Bravo! I'd say H.G. Wells, Orson Welles and George Pal would all be pleased, for the most part, with what Steven Spielberg has done with the myth. There were a couple of polite tips of the hat to George Pal's version, perhaps for us boomers. And I'll defer to Dave Golding on this , but I think there might have even been a wink to Donnie Darko fans. I kind of think Spielberg may have wanted to show M. Night Shaymalan how it's done Excellent summer entertainment. Not great art, necessarily, but a good scare. Nice mob scene too. Maybe if their cell phones had all worked they'd have been, you know

If you were to combine a Frank Capra-esque feel-good tale with some sharp, sarcastic and at times cruel humour, it's hard to imagine the result being too far different from Harold Ramis' delightful 'Groundhog Day'.
Bill Murray, in probably the most memorable role of his career outwith the Ghostbusting arena, shines as Phil Connors, the super-cynical TV weatherman forced to repeat the same day time and time again. It's February 2nd which, to the people of the small town of Punxsutawney, means Groundhog Day - an annual opportunity to watch an over-sized squirrel predict the weather. For Phil, though, it means waking every morning to Sonny and Cher, endlessly trying to explain his situation to his bemused workmates (Andie MacDowell and Chris Elliott), generally living through the world's most critical case of déjà vu.
This movie contains some remarkably dark moments, most notably when Phil loses all hope and begins daily making his way through all number of fruitless suicide attempts. What shows through, however, is the transformation in his character whilst all around him remain exactly the same, and of course his eventual romance with the bubbly but distrusting Rita (MacDowell). Murray's never exactly been one for playing the most lovey-dovey of characters, but the relationship between him and McDowell works surprisingly well.

HERE's a line you'll either recognize or you won't: "This is one time where television really fails to capture the true excitement of a large squirrel predicting the weather." If you don't recognize this little gem, you've either never seen Groundhog Day or you're not a fan of what is, in my opinion, one of the best films of the last 40 years.
