  • University English majors 4 hours (two 2-hour lessons) Pre-viewing activities/ viewing/ after viewing
The repetition in this film makes it relatively easy to understand. Many jokes are physical. Students will laugh, which is always a good thing.
Pre-viewing activities For culture, ask about traditional methods of forecasting the weather in China. Talk about attitudes of city people toward those who live in countryside.
  • Groundhog Day is a folk belief (if the groundhog sees his shadow there will be 6 more weeks of winter) given new life in the television culture which dictates that the TV weatherman be a public relations agent and entertainer. Often required to appear at community events. He should be lovable. Phil means "love" in Greek, but this TV weatherman is anything but lovable.
Town and city: Urbanites consider small towns boring, unsophisticated, backward, etc. while rural residents consider city dwellers to be selfish, insincere, unfeeling

Names Roger Chrisman, 20 June 1999 Don't miss Leslie's Names and their meanings in the hand outs section below! Your students might enjoy using popular western names in English class (a) to learn their spelling and pronunciation, and (b) to have a well chosen English name for themselves when they want to let someone call them by a western name as an alternative to their Chinese name.
    Remembering names
It is difficult in large classes for students, not to mention us teachers, to remember all the classmates' English names. Name cards can help you both keep attendance records and *address students by name* whether they use western names or Chinese pinyin names. Bring plenty of 3x5 index cards with you from abroad. They are not a standard Chinese stationary item and are very hard to find here.
    Seating chart
If you students sit in the same place every time you meet (they are apt to do this), you can use a simple seating chart to help you take roll.
    Name tents
3x5 cards folded in half lengthwise with the student's name on each side. The student can take this with them when they move to another seat during rotating activities. The name tents are collected into a stack after class, tied with a rubber band, and kept in someone's safe hands so that none of them will get lost.

No matter how mediocre the film, time spent with him is always rewarding. That absurdist deadpan has served him since the Carter-era "Saturday Night Live." And in his latest, "Groundhog Day," the shtick is still funny. For a time, the movie's pretty good too. "Groundhog" will never be designated a national film treasure by the Library of Congress. But, in terms of vehicle selection, this is one of the better ones Murray has hitched himself to. In fact, its "Twilight Zone"-type premise (scripted by Danny Rubin and director Harold Ramis) is initially intriguing. A people-hating weatherman on a Pittsburgh TV station, Murray's waiting for his real ship to come in. "For your information, Hairdo," he asserts to a well-coiffed colleague at WPBH, "there's a news channel interested in me." Until that questionable possibility, however, he must content himself with such hated aspects of his job as the annual trip on Groundhog Day. For this inane (to his mind) festival, he must join the reporting flocks at Punxsutawney, Pa., to catch the yearly appearance of the spring-determining rodent. If the divining "Punxsutawney Phil" sees his furry shadow, six more weeks of winter are due. If he doesn't, the thaw is on. Now back for his fourth Groundhog Day, Murray with producer Andie MacDowell and cameraman Chris Elliott waits impatiently for the day to end.

Full Review Groundhog Day gave brief but much-needed boosts to the careers of both funny-but-undiscerning comedian Bill Murray and pretty-but-rubbish actress Andie MacDowell. Its plot is well-known, but mis-quoted. A jaded weather reporter is forced to re-live Groundhog Day over and over again. Most reviews will mention something about 'until he gets it right' - but interestingly that's not something that's ever actually mentioned in the film itself. A review of this film by a non-American is always going to be of particular importance, as I realised when I looked at the other Epinions entries. I knew nothing about the whole Groundhog ritual thing until I saw the film, and I had no idea that the tradition was actually genuine until I read the reviews. And this puts me in a better position to appreciate the film. So many reviews here compare the film's setting to the real Punksatawney (or wherever), and fail to truly come to terms with the material. Judging by the reviews

    Groundhog Day
    The History of Groundhog Day
On February 2nd, the groundhog comes out of his hole to take a look. If he sees his shadow, he will crawl back into his home for another six weeks of winter. If he does not see his shadow, then winter is over. At least that is how the legend goes. The basis of the tradition is thought to stem from rhymes about the religious observance of Candlemas, or the purification of the Virgin Mary. Despite the source of the rhyme, there is no religious connection to the ritual gathering about the holes of groundhogs to see if they observe a shadow. Here is one of these rhymes: If Candlemas Day be fair and bright,
    Winter will have another flight;
But if it be dark with clouds and rain,
Winter is gone and will not come again.
The reliance on an animal to determine the end of winter comes out of Germany, as well as England and Scotland. In Germany, the badger was the creature capable of predicting the weather and the end of the winter season. Finding no such animals in the new world, the groundhog was chosen as the substitute. Although groundhogs throughout the country are the subject of gatherings and news stories on February 2nd, prince of the day is Punxsutawney Phil, who resides in Puxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

This makes a nice keepsake for parents. Children love to see what they look like in profile!! Can also use this as a introduction to President's Day, since Lincoln and Washington are frequently seen in silhouette.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This piece appears in the February 14, 2005, issue of National Review H ere's a line you'll either recognize or you won't: "This is one time where television really fails to capture the true excitement of a large squirrel predicting the weather." If you don't recognize this little gem, you've either never seen Groundhog Day or you're not a fan of what is, in my opinion, one of the best films of the last 40 years. As the day of the groundhog again approaches, it seems only fitting to celebrate what will almost undoubtedly join It's a Wonderful Life in the pantheon of America's most uplifting, morally serious, enjoyable, and timeless movies.
Groundhog Day was the central metaphor. And dozens of committed Christians of all denominations related that it was one of their most cherished movies. When the Museum of Modern Art in New York debuted a film series on "The Hidden God: Film and Faith" two years ago, it opened with

National Groundhog Job Shadow Day You're invited to kick off February dental careers month by participating in the Annual National Groundhog Job Shadow Day beginning on February 2, 2006, and continuing throughout the spring of 2006. Job shadowing enables young people to "shadow" a workplace mentor as he or she goes through a normal day on the job, providing an up-close look at how the skills learned in school are put in action in the workplace. It is an excellent opportunity to expose students to dental careers, specifically, dentistry, dental assisting, dental hygiene and dental laboratory technology. Using Movies in the Classroom
    An Overview
    Steve Louw
There is no doubt that movies offer tired teachers and classrooms a nice big motivating push! Movies present language in a way that is often more natural than that found in course-books, the fantastic visual context aids understanding and boosts listening, and students just simply love them. The question is not whether we can use movies in the EFL classroom, but which ones to use and how to use them. Some of the older films have a better reputation for lower level learners. Try films like Stagecoach, Groundhog Day, Forrest Gump, and Witness . Films with physical, rather than verbal humour, are readily appreciated by lower learners: Groundhog Day, Freaky Friday and Nine to Five . Besides the fact that movies like these are funny and easy to follow, they have deeper underlying messages that make for good discussions. For the same reason, The Truman Show is good.
