A (very brief) Geographic Introduction to Grenada, West Indies
by C. D. Allen, Geographer To attempt to describe the entire geography of a place is, to say the least, a very broad and lofty goal. Geography as a discipline itself is broad in nature and scope, and due to that fact, this research must be a broad body of research. The term geography as we know it today was first coined by the Greek Librarian and Scholar, Eratosthenes, who in the second century BC, among other great accomplishments, measured the polar circumference of the earth with amazing accuracy. Thus, the etymology of the word geography comes from the Greek words, geo , meaning "earth" and graphein , meaning "to describe." Geography therefore is usually defined as a discipline that "describes the earth." As stated in the opening paragraph, this allows for the study of nearly anything on the earth, since that is what geographers do, "describe" things. But what do we describe? The attempt of this "introduction" is to describe, in brief, the Geography of Grenada: from the climate and weather to the topography and geology, and among other topics, to even encompass the study of economics, politics, and history. Bearing in mind that the earth constantly undergoes changes, describing a place can be even more of a rigorous task. Geography is one of the few truly malleable disciplines, and the geographer must constantly keep up with the changes. Certainly history, societies, and landforms change, but usually over decades, centuries, and millennia, respectively. In contrast, geography changes

Geography
Part of the volcanic chain in the Lesser Antilles arc, Grenada and its possessions generally vary in elevation from under 300 meters to over 600 meters above sea level. Grenada is more rugged and densely foliated than its outlying possessions, but other geographical conditions are more similar. Grenada's landmass rises from a narrow, coastal plain in a generally north-south trending axis of ridges and narrow valleys. Mount St. Catherine is the highest peak at 840 meters. Although many of the rocks and soils are of volcanic origin, the volcanic cones dotting Grenada are long dormant. Some of the drainage features on Grenada remain from its volcanic past. There are a few crater lakes, the largest of which is Grand Etang. The swift upper reaches of rivers, which occasionally overflow and cause flooding and landslides, generally cut deeply into the conic slopes. By contrast, many of the water courses in the lowlands tend to be sluggish and meandering. Data as of November 1987

A country in the Windward Islands of the West Indies comprising the island of Grenada and the southern Grenadines. Originally inhabited by Arawaks, who were later driven out by Caribs, the island of Grenada was discovered by Columbus in 1498 and settled by the French in the mid-17th century. It became a British colony in 1783 and achieved independence in 1974. A coup in 1979 brought a Marxist government to power, and concern over Cuban influence led to an invasion by primarily U.S. troops in Ocotober 1983, after which democratic rule was restored. St. George's, on Grenada, is the capital and the largest city. Population: 89,300 . Gre·na di·an -dē-ən var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt";
