Grenada Study Abroad Warm, gentle tradewinds rustle palm fronds above a sugary white sand beach lining a turquoise sea. Brightly colored sailboats splash across picture-perfect bays; the scent of tropical fruits fills the air along with the bouncing rhythms of reggae and calypso music. To most people, these cliche tourism industry advertising images are what the Caribbean is all about. Most visits made to the Caribbean by outsiders are spent either on cruise ships or in the artificial environments of all-inclusive hotels. This study abroad program is about learning how to see a different Caribbean, and gives HSU students an opportunity to live and study in a unique region of the world. The entire program will take place in the small Eastern Caribbean nation of Grenada (located 90 miles north of South America). Students on this program study monkeys in the rainforest, visit archaeological sites, participate in local events, and conduct their own anthropological research. This program is open to all qualified Humboldt State University students. The field of anthropology is a core scientific discipline in the study and understanding of human diversity. A central concept used by anthropologists attempting to study the world around them with an unbiased viewpoint is the ability to conduct field research while maintaining "cultural relativity." Immersion in another culture is one of the most effective ways to internalize this difficult concept. Students that have participated on this program in the past have said that it has forever changed the way they look at their world.

Island Research Prospectus A study of the arts on the island of Grenada The decision to study ad document the current status of the arts (visual art, music, dance and local skilled crafts) on Grenada, the island of my travel choice, was prompted by two factors. First, my own interest and activities in visual and performing arts guided me in my choice. The second factor was a result of my preparatory research of the island which failed to uncover more than minimal information on the state of the arts in Grenada. This piqued my interest, as this small island has the same general history and cultural heritage as such places as Dominica, Aruba, Jamaica nad other islands in the West Indies, yet in literature covering the history of Caribbean music, visual arts and literature there is very little mention of Grenada. I want to explore this small mystery. The question of the state of the arts in Grenada is important personally because of my own interests and curiosity. Whether it is of broader importance remains to be seen. It is my hypothesis that this aspect of culture on Grenada is worthy of exploration, and that for some reason has been largely by-passed by researchers and writers. As history shows that all forms of art have been imbedded in the cultures of peoples worldwide, I believe that the forms ad expressions of the arts extant in Grenada are important to the understanding of that country and worthy of acknowledgment.

He returned to parliament as an elected member of the House of Representatives in 1976 and was jailed by the People's Revolutionary Government in 1979 when they seized power in the Eastern Caribbean's first coup d'etat
It was while in solitary confinement that he found the inspiration and time to write on sheets of toilet paper this moving volume of poetry.

to send this page to a friend... It is almost 20 years ago that the tiny Caribbean nation of Grenada briefly occupied the world stage with images of invading marines and celebrating islanders. But as 6,000 US troops took possession of an island of fewer than 100,000 people in October 1983, there was confusion as to where the action was actually taking place. Viewers of Soviet television news bulletins were disconcerted to learn that American forces had invaded southern Spain and taken the Andalucian city of Granada. Grenada’s emergence from international obscurity was the culmination of four turbulent years of revolution and social experimentation. The New Jewel Movement, a group of young radicals, had ousted the dictatorial Eric Gairy in March 1979 and introduced long-overdue reforms for the island’s impoverished majority. The revolutionary government, and especially its charismatic leader Maurice Bishop, won support at home and abroad, but the US viewed developments, particularly an alignment with Cuba, with deep suspicion. In the end, the revolution imploded in factional in-fighting, Bishop and several supporters were murdered and a short-lived and hated military council was swept away by the marines.
