Grenada History and Culture
History The first people to inhabit what is now Grenada were the Arawaks. They were later wiped out by the Caribs, who occupied the island when Christopher Columbus landed there in 1498. The French built Grenada's first European settlement, initially appeasing and then slaughtering the Caribs, many of whom chose suicide over domination by the French. In 1651, the last of the Caribs leapt to their deaths from Morne de Sauteurs, a rocky promontory on the island's north coast.

Cultural representation
In order to determine the degree of representation of the Country's natural features, potential areas were identified and analyzed in the following ways: - Representation of the geological formation composition and history and their significance to geomorphic and physiographic features in the area. - Protection of native species of flora and fauna particularly those threatened with extinction. - Representation and protection of ecosystems, through protection of watersheds and water courses. Maintain high standards of water quality and quantity,/protection of sites and objects of cultural, historical and archeological heritage.
Geologic representation in the protected areas
The antilles volcanic arc dates back to the Eocene (50M. years ago). The products of the earliest phase are mainly underwater and are technically deformed. The phase of deformation ends with the Miocene (25 M. years ago). The vulcanism of the recent and active arc occurs after the new structural rearrangement of the area in the post Miocene times.

The Grenada Drum festival is organised by the Grenada Drum Festival Committee. The Committee comprise of the following members,
  • Livingston Krumah Nelson - President Kester Lyons - Chairman Bernard Alexander - PRO Shadel Peters - Secretary Johnson Booker Percival Courtney Edwin Charles
The 2004 Grenada Drum Festival was held over a three day period (May 7th, 8th and 9th) at the Seamoon Cultural Center in St. Andrew’s. There were seven overseas groups and eleven local groups participating in the 2004 event. For the first time the organisers were able to house most of the performing groups in one location at Sam’s Inn in St. Andrew’s creating a total cultural village. Rainbow Inn, a nearby facility was also utilized to host Dancin Africa, the group from Barbados which had a large contingent. Change of Venue. This year the festival was moved to the Seamoon Cultural Center. Moving the Drum Festival to the Seamoon Cultural Center was quite a challenge; however it was a step up from the previous site with lots of room for development of the event.

The Tivoli Drummers
The Tivoli Drummers are an Afro-Caribbean group based in the village of Tivoli, in the parish of St. Andrew, Grenada. The style of drumming in Tivoli comes from the traditional drumming brought to Grenada by African men and women during the slave era. Founded in 1995 by Livingston Krumah Nelson, the son of Lemo, a great traditional drummer, the mission of the Tivoli Drummers was to spread the Drum Culture. The group recruited young members and taught them the art of drum playing, dancing and singing in the traditional style. It was recognized early in the group formation that the number of persons needed to participate and the level of organization required to maintain the traditional style was quite difficult. Krumah, the Director of the Tivoli Drummers then introduced choreographed drumming. That style of drumming is unique to Tivoli drummers and is not seen on television, in the English speaking Caribbean or within the thirty-nine groups that performed in Guadeloupe at the 2001 Gwoka (Drum) Festival. It is this choreographed drumming which makes the Tivoli Drummers stand out and maps out for their niche market. To be successful the group embarked on several creative and experimental styles of drumming, facilitated by the manufacture of drums within the group and the introduction of other instruments. Today Tivoli Drummers can boast of its success and its impact on the Grenadian society.

A country in the Windward Islands of the West Indies comprising the island of Grenada and the southern Grenadines. Originally inhabited by Arawaks, who were later driven out by Caribs, the island of Grenada was discovered by Columbus in 1498 and settled by the French in the mid-17th century. It became a British colony in 1783 and achieved independence in 1974. A coup in 1979 brought a Marxist government to power, and concern over Cuban influence led to an invasion by primarily U.S. troops in Ocotober 1983, after which democratic rule was restored. St. George's, on Grenada, is the capital and the largest city. Population: 89,300 . Gre·na di·an -dē-ən var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt";

News-Cultural Event in NYC
New York City, NY, Dec. 20, 2004 A press conference was hosted on Thursday, December 16th in Manhattan by the Grenada Board of Tourism (GBT), in conjunction with MTV and VP Records. The event was a compact showcase of Grenada’s tourism product, Caribbean culture as expressed in music, and the promotion of a special Hurricane Ivan relief effort. The afternoon at the Park Central New York Hotel included an informative update on tourism-related, post-Hurricane Ivan reconstruction efforts in Grenada, from Mr. William B. Joseph, Director of the Grenada Board of Tourism. This was accompanied by a slide show that focused on the somewhat disfigured, but certainly unspoiled beauty of the tri-island state. In the words of the USA Director of the GBT, Christine Noel, "The event was a very successful one - our goal was to update the invited guests and the public at large of our rebounding efforts, especially in the area of tourism, and we were able to do so." "I was particularly encouraged by the support for our rebuilding efforts as expressed by the attending travel, media and entertainment representatives," she added. The speeches and slide show were followed by an impressive unplugged entertainment session featuring Machel Montano singing his reworded hit-song "We Will Carry On," with Lima Calbio as vocal backup, and Super P singing "Grenada Will Rise Again," accompanied by Machel Montano on guitar.

About the People Restaurant "Unspoiled, Undiscovered", are two words best suited for the description of this lovely little island. Only "586-acres", Petite Martinique is one of the smallest inhabited island in the Windward islands. Petite Martinique belongs to the tri-island state of Grenada, located at longitude 61° 40 West and latitude 12° 29 North. It is the perfect location for a get-away. The Tri-island state of Grenada includes; Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, the spice islands of the Caribbean. Three beautiful tropical islands, in a chain of islands, that forms a graceful curve between the continents of North and South America. Being the most Northern island in the tri-island state, it is the closest to the boundary that separates St.Vincent and the Grenadines from Grenada and it's islands. It's closest neighbour, "Petit St.Vincent", is less than half a mile to the north. The boundary separates the islands, cutting closer to Petite Martinique than Petit St.Vincent. Creating an international boundary, that seldom gets any notice. Petite Martinique is volcanic in origin, having a cone shape, with the highest hill, the "Piton", rising to 756 feet above sea level. The Caribbean Sea, laps the shores on the western side of the island and the dramatic Atlantic swells, break on the eastern coast. The main beach, located on the western side of the island, contains two docks. One privately own by the company B & C Fuel Enterprise and the other belongs to the Government of Grenada.

    Dubbed "Spice Island" because of the impressive amounts of nutmeg, cloves, mace, cinnamon, ginger and cocoa grown here, Grenada's dense forests and colorful markets have long attracted visitors to its fragrant shores. Covering this volcanic island are cascading rivers and lush rainforests, plus centuries-old spice plantations and rum distilleries still using traditional methods of production. All Types of Topography
    With a coastline indented by protected bays and beaches, and a rugged mountainous interior with waterfalls, Grenada appeals to adventure seekers whether they're armed with scuba gear or hiking boots. Because of Grenada's remarkable topography, the island experiences climate changes according to altitude. Horseshoe Shaped Harbor
    The pretty, pastel town St George's is often referred to as one of the most stunning Caribbean harbor cities. The yellow, pink, tangerine, lilac and white 18th-century French and Georgian English architecture of Grenada's capital presents as colorful a mix as the busy market street of Carenage. This center of activity where schooners unload their produce is packed with stalls selling exotic fruit, vegetables and of course, spices.
