The Faeroe Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean, almost midway between Norway, Iceland and Scotland and consist of 18 islands separated by narrow sounds and fjords. The nearest land is the Shetland Isles to the southeast at a distance of 162 nautical miles (300 km). The Faeroe Islands are part of the kingdom of Denmark. The islands were a Danish county until 1948, but have since then been self-governing as laid down in the Home Rule Act. Defence matters and foreign policy do not come under the Home Rule, but the Faeroese authorities do conduct negotiations regarding fishing rights with other countries, both with and without the participation of the Danish Foreign Office. The population of the Faeroe Islands tripled during the course of the 19th century, and again during the 20th century. At the end of 1989, the population had reached a high of 47,838. In the following 6 years, this figure fell by 4000 but since 1996 it has been increasing, reaching 47,000 inhabitants at the beginning of the 21st century. The limited information available from previous centuries indicates that the population previously stood at around 4000. The strong growth in the population over the last two centuries is mainly due to the fact that society has ceased to rely on one natural resource, the land, and begun to rely on another, namely the sea. This switch in resources led to new production methods, changes in the infrastructure, new patterns of settlement and new cultural features.

Greenland (Greenlandic: Kalaallit Nunaat , "The Land of the Greenlanders (Kalaallit)"; Danish: Gr¸nland ) is a self-governed Danish territory. An Arctic island nation located in North America by geography, Greenland is part of Europe politically. The Atlantic Ocean and Iceland lie to Greenland's southeast; the Greenland Sea to the east; the Arctic Ocean to the north; Baffin Bay and Canada to the west. Greenland is the world's largest island, and is the largest dependent territory by area in the world. About 81 percent of its surface is covered by ice. Greenland was one of the Norwegian Crown colonies until 1815, when it formally became a Danish colony, although Norway and Denmark had been in a personal union for centuries. Greenland became an integral part of the Kingdom of Denmark in 1953. It was granted home rule ( hjemmestyre ) by the Folketing (Danish parliament) on May 1, 1979. The law went into effect the following year. The Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II, remains Greenland's Head of state.

by John A. Tilley In 1940, most Americans who knew that Greenland existed thought of it as a nondescript white blob near the tops of their world maps. That the place might have any military significance to the great powers had occurred to scarcely anyone - least of all to the people who lived there. But in the next five years Greenland was to become a small but significant theater of war, and was to confront the U.S. Coast Guard with some of the most arduous duties it had ever been called upon to perform.
Greenland is a largely deserted island of about 827,000 square miles, most of which lies above the Arctic Circle. Scientists believe that the interior is covered by mountains and steep gorges, but since prehistoric times they have been buried under a mass of ice that covers 80 percent of the land area. (If the Greenland ice cap ever melted, the world's oceans would rise by about 20 feet.) In the winter, the arctic winds blow unimpeded for hundreds of miles over the ice cap, covering it with snow and driving the temperature as low as 90 degrees below zero.
The coastline is penetrated by hundreds of narrow fjords, some of them jutting 90 miles inland. For most of the year Greenland is virtually surrounded by a 20- to 30-mile-wide belt that the Eskimos call the storis, a mass of floating icebergs ranging from a few yards to several city blocks wide. During the winter Greenland is almost isolated from the rest of the world; only ships equipped for breaking ice can force their way into the fjords. Few have reason to try.

April 8, 2004 Greenland's massive ice sheet could begin to melt this century and may disappear completely within the next thousand years if global warming continues at its present rate. According to a new climate change study, the melting of Greenland's ice sheet would raise the oceans by seven meters (23 feet), threatening to submerge cities located at sea level, from London to Los Angeles. Even a partial melting of the ice sheet could have catastrophic consequences for low-lying countries like Bangladesh and the Maldives. "A one-meter [three-foot] sea level rise would submerge a substantial amount of Bangladesh," Jonathan Gregory, the study's lead author and a climate scientist at the University of Reading in England, said in a telephone interview. Many experts believe the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will have reached levels around the year 2100 that would cause the temperature to rise that much.

    Greenland
    Geography
Greenland is the largest island in the world. Its northerly location, at the point where the Atlantic meets the Arctic Ocean, means that Greenland is surrounded principally by cold ocean currents, so the coasts are constantly being cooled. This, combined with the radiation of cold from the inland ice, gives Greenland its arctic climate. The ice cap or inland ice covers 1,833,900 square km, equivalent to 85 percent of Greenland's total area, and extends 2,500 km (1,553 miles) from north to south and up to 1,000 km from east to west. At its center, the ice can be up to 3 km thick, representing 10 percent of the world's total fresh water reserves. If all the ice were to melt, the world's oceans would rise seven meters. Climate
Greenland is often associated with cold and darkness and it can, of course, get very cold. However, there is also plenty of light and, although the polar darkness often reigns (in Qaanaaq, the sun doesn't rise for a whole three months!), it is never totally dark. Greenland enjoys more hours of summer than anywhere down south, but the weather is nowhere near as warm, even though the light is much more intense. Greenland summers won't give you an all-over tan, but your face and neck will turn a beautiful shade of brown.

I worked for many years on Greenland problems, mainly dealing with the Greenland ice sheet, but I am now increasingly interested by problems of global glaciology.
