THE GREEK MYTHS
Greek Mythology as Historical Tradition
William Harris, Prof. Em. Middlebury College
PREFACE
For the Romans the Greek myths were readily available, and since they reflected the values and status of the literary models of the Greek world, they were often used for largely illustrative and decorative purposes. We see a fascination with the Greek stories in Ovid's and Propertius' poetry, but sheer proliferation of mythologizing tends to become an end in itself. Mythological "references" in Propertius are often nothing more than literary "asides" for the recognition of an educated class of readers, while the poet's value lies more in his personal and subjective processes than in the mythological trimming. For earlier authors Aeschylos and especially Pindar, the myths were intertwined with the poet's meaning in an inextricable interplay of forces, but already in the Hellenistic period and especially in Alexandrian circles the Greek myths were either reference points for new treatments of traditional themes, or used for purely decorative effects. By the time Apollodoros' Library of Mythology was put together about l50 B.C. for literary readers' use, the myths had become a web of stories which had lost both religious and historical significance. When the Roman learned his mythology out of Julius Hyginus' strange little abridgment in Latin, he was familiarizing himself with materials which he would find useful in his Classical reading, much as the modern student of literature uses his pocket dictionary of mythology to decode Milton's Paradise Lost or the Greek Drama which is on his reading list.

Greek Mythology
From ancient times to today, Greek mythology has captivated the imagination of its audience in dramatic fashion. The oldest Greek myths are attributed to three sources; Homer, Hesiod, and the Homeric Hymns. While the exact dates that these myths first appeared is a subject of ongoing discussion, it is often assumed that they were written during the 8th century b.c. During the Classical Period in Ancient Greece, 5th century b.c., many more myths were written and many of have been preserved intact. In these pages you will find useful information regarding Greek Mythology, from the 12 Gods of Olympus to information on Greek Myths. This is the Internet after all, where words like "sex" and "mp3" continue to rank high on the list of most searched terms. But every month or so, a new word topples the rest as the one appearing in search boxes the most. The searched term can be representative of the times, popular trends, or simply the newest buzzword; whatever the case, each special feature examines why Internet users are in a frenzy to find this topic.

To be perfectly honest, learning the classics such as Greek mythology will not do anything to boost your career. It won't make you regional manager and that corner office on the 20th floor could remain out of your grasp. If anything, the time you spend reading this article could prove a valuable investment, as it is a recurring category on Jeopardy! Greek mythology might have been popular more than 3,000 years ago, but it still lives on as our language is peppered with expressions relating to these myths. Consider the words Herculean, Sisyphean, or the famed Midas touch. Stories from that era are often the basis for morality tales that still shape our culture today.

This Charming Man: The charismatic life and horrific death of Brandon Teena The tragic 'Brandon Teena Story' By Richard von Busack In one version of an ancient Greek myth, the clairvoyant Tiresias was transformed from male to female. Jupiter then struck him blind as punishment for answering the question whether men or women enjoy sex more. Those born between sexes, as Teena Brandon was in Nebraska in 1973, have a sort of secret knowledge that the rest of us can only guess at it, bounded as we are by the fact of our own gender. The envy that knowledge arouses can be fatal. The young Brandon, who switched his/her name to Brandon Teena when taking a male identity, is the subject of the harrowing documentary The Brandon Teena Story , playing at the Castro Feb. 19-25. The documentary is an obsessive, deeply researched study of the last year of Brandon's lifea life that ended with murder just weeks after his/her 21st birthday. Filmmakers Susan Muska and Greta Olafsdottir interview the dozen or so people who knew Brandon in the small town of Falls City, Neb. The scrupulous details make this story all the more sickening. The worst part of the film is an audiotape and transcription of Brandon's interview with the sheriff, shortly after Brandon was driven out to a field and raped twice on Christmas Eve 1993. On the tape, then-Sheriff Charles Laux of Richardson County makes it plain that he has no compassion for freaks and makes the experience as degrading as possible for Brandon.

The Muses from Greek Mythology
Athena visits Apollo and the Muses
Bartholomeus Spranger (XVI cent.) The Muses are the Greek goddesses who preside over the arts and sciences and inspire those who excel at these pursuits. Daughters of Zeus , king of the gods, and Mnemosyne ("memory"), they were born at Pieria at the foot of Mount Olympus. Their nurse, Eupheme, raised them along with her son, Crotus the hunter, who was transported into the sky as Sagittarius upon his death. Their name (akin to the Latin mens and English mind ) denotes 'memory' or 'a reminder', since in the earliet times poets, having no books to read from, relied on their memories. The Romans identified the Muses with certain obscure Italian water-goddesses, the Camenae.
The original number of muses and their names varies in earlier times as their evolution blossomed in Greek mythology. At first, three muses were worshipped on Mount Helicon in Boeotia: Melete ("meditation"), Mneme ("memory"), and Aoede ("song"). Another three were worshipped at Delphi and their names represented the names of the strings of a lyre: Nete, Mese, and Hypate. Several other versions were worshipped until the Greeks finally established the nine muses in mythology as:
