The Cycladic islands are a group of 56 islands of varying sizes scattered over the azure waters of the Aegean Sea. The Cyclades lie to the east of Peloponnese and southeast of the coast of Attica. They stretch as far as Samos and Ikaria in the eastern part and extend to the south by the Cretan Sea. The islands have long stretches of sandy beaches, fragrant pine forests, and rocky capes with crystalline blue waters. The culture is rich and colorful giving birth to one of the most important civilizations, the Cycladic civilization (3000-1000 BC). The charming islands are embellished with little white houses, countless little churches, windmills, narrow alleyways, storm-lashed landscape, and scenic local architecture. Each island is unique.

BIRTH OF ZEUS According to mythology, Zeus, the God of gods, was born in Crete. Cronus, his father, trying to avoid his parents' curse that one of his children would take away from him the ruling of the sky, murdered his children one-by-one, by eating them. His wife, Rhea, terrified and chased by her husband, sought refuge in a cave in the ancient "Aegean Mountain", and, with the help of Uranus and Gaia, gave birth to her last child. Cronus was fooled with a rock in dipers and the loud singing and dancing of demons "Kourites", covering the noise of the newborn's cry. Zeus was rased by the Nymphs, drinking milk from goat Amalthia, the later became a star and her skin was Zeus' shield. When Zeus grew up, he defeated Cronus and became the ruler of the sky. The rock that had fooled his father was put in Delfphi, to remind mortals and gods of his glorious power.
MINOS' REIGN
Minos bewed Pasiphae, the daughter of Sun and nymph Crete and together had eight children, Androgeos, Katreas, Glafkos, Dafkalion, Ariadne, Xenodiki, Akalli and Phaedra. According to mythology, when Minos asked Neptune for a sign that would mean he would become the King of Crete, from the sea emerged a beautiful bull that Minos refused to sacrifice, thus irritating Neptune who punished Minos by making his wife Pasiphae fall in love with the white bull. Pasiphae, with the help of a wooden cow made by Daedalus, was united with the bull and gave birth to Minotaur, who had the body of a human and the head of a bull. According to myth, this creature lived in the Labyrinth, in the palace's underground and was fed with the blood of youngsters. The famous Athenean hero Theseus defeated Minotaur and releaved Athens from the harsh "blood tax" that paid to this supernatural creature.

The Aegean Sea (Greek Aigaion Pelagos ) is an arm of the Mediterranean Sea between Greece and Asia Minor. The name is variously explained in writings of antiquity as derived from Aegeus , king of Athens and father of Theseus , or from Aegea , a queen of the Amazons who drowned in the sea, or from an ancient Greek town named Aegae . The Aegean Sea is about 644km (400mi) long and about 290km (180mi) wide. It is connected with the Sea of Marmara in the northeast by the Strait of the Dardanelles . The Aegean Sea is irregular in outline with numerous gulfs, and is studded with islands, including the Sporades Cyclades , and Dodecanisa . It was the center of one of the earliest known European civilizations. With the rise of the ancient Greek and Middle Eastern culture, the lands surrounding the sea became the sites of widely differing civilizations, and the culture of the Aegean Islands became identified with that of all of Greece.
Limnos , is an eastern Greek island in the Aegean Sea , off the western coast of Asia Minor, near the Dardanelles , the strait connecting the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Marmara. The island, with an area of 482 square kilometers (186 square miles) is largely volcanic with a few fertile regions where livestock is raised and fruit and grain are grown.

Fall is the best time experience Crete. The tourists have left and Cretans stroll down the twisting, shop-lined streets of Heraklion, Crete's seaside capital, happily munching on bougatsa ( flaky pastry filled with vanilla-cinammon cream) hot from the oven. There may be a nip in the air, but the people who sit sipping aperitifs at the outdoor cafes don't seem to notice. Although Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, it is only about 160 miles long and 35 miles at its broadest. Despite its size, it is a powerful presence, with its snowcapped mountains rising to eight thousand feet. Cretans shop daily at markets filled with displays of perfectly ripe vegetables and fruits, wild greens, glistening sea bass just off the boat, arrays of feta and kasseri cheese and homemade yogurt; jars of Cretan honey, freshly baked crusty barley rusks, bins of nuts and raisins, and bowls of green and black olives. Throughout the market are the sweet smells of exquisite spices and herbs that flavor Greek cooking: cinnamon, garlic, cumin, oregano and rosemary. Once cooked, these foods are anointed with fruity olive oil from 1,000 year old trees and washed down with a glass or two of fragrant Grecian wine. Here in the United States, let go whatever images you have had of Greek food as served in Greek-American restaurants in the past - lamb presented on skewers, leaden moussaka, gyros , and baklava soaked in, rather than just flavored with syrup.

Just five miles from the coast of Asia Minor, Lesvos, or Lesbos, lies to the north of Chios and south of Limnos. The breathtaking landscape rolls through regions of pine-covered mountains to areas of barren, yet dramatic volcanic stone. There are numerous sand and pebble beaches and many sheltered and isolated coves dotted along the spectacular indented coastline. The temperate climate, inland rivers and natural springs all contribute to maintain the surprisingly lush vegetation of the island. Lesbos is world renowned for it's many varied species of flora and fauna. It is also host to a superb petrified forest located between Eressos and Sigri in the Southwest. This is a land steeped in tradition and rich in history and culture. The birthplace of musicians, poets, writers and artists who have been inspired through time and still in present day, by the natural charm and picturesque views allowing endless opportunity for exploration and discovery. Wherever you choose to stay on the island, the chances are you will begin your journey from Mytilini, the capital of Lesvos and host to the Airport and commercial Seaport.

Its ancient name was Peparethos and is mentioned by the pre-Hellenic people of Asia Minor who settled in the Aegean region in the period 2800 - 2000 BC. This name is mentioned likewise by Thoukydides. Around 1600 BC Cretans whose leader was the mythical king Staphylos, son of Theseus and Ariadne, settled the island. As tradition reminds us, Theseus, son of Aegeas king of Athens, was sent with 7 young boys and 7 young girls to the Cretan king Minos, as a duty demanded by Athens, intended to be offered as sacrifice to the Minotaur (a strange creation of mythology, half man, half bull) who lived in the labyrinth underneath the palace of Knosos in Crete. There, Theseus became acquainted with Ariadne, Minos' daughter. Ariadne fell in love with him and helped him, giving him a ball of wool, to escape from the labyrinth and to survive. Theseus found the exit, kidnapped Ariadne and left Crete. . But on the island of Naxos he abandoned Ariadne who in her loneliness discovered the God Dionisos who in his turn fell in love with the girl and took her to Lemnos. In Lemnos Ariadne and Dionisos had four sons, Thoantas, Oinopionas, Staphylos and Peparithos. Peparithos was the first to settle on the island of Skopelos. Until today his name survives in this place full of olive trees and pine forests.
