Ios island : Architecture
The site of the village is on the hill-top, first so as to make it possible to see the pirates approaching and take evasive action, and second to secure even the smallest piece of land where a crop might be planted The main residential area is Chora, with her narrow streets, wisely oriented, so as to -protect from the open sea winds, with covered spaces to shelter from the strong sunbeams of summer and the heavy rainfalls of winter. more
Ios History and Culture
The finds of the archeological excavation on the hill of Skarkos prove that the island has been inhabited since the early Cycladic period. Evidence of this lies in the very well preserved walls of buildings and the vessels demonstrating the flourishing of an important community. The remnants of the walls on the west and north entrances to Chora lead us to the conclusion that the castle's hill has been inhabited since the archaid period. There are elements that bear witness to the presence of Careans, Pelasgians, Achaeans and Phoenicians, who gave the island the name "Phoenicia". The Ionians came and settled to the island in 1050 B.C. A version about the origin of the island's name claims that it derives from the name of the Ionians, but

Greek Island Culture On the Greek Islands, like the rest of Greece, education is free. Children between the ages of 6 and 15 are required to go to school. Greece also has 10 universities. Greek culture is very old and has influenced the culture of many other countries in the western hemisphere. Some important kinds of Greek culture from the ancient days are drama, art, architecture, literature, music, philosophy, religion and sports. One of Greek Islanders favorite games is called Astragali , or Knucklebones. This game is similar to Jacks. Long ago, the pieces were made of anklejoints of small, cloven footed animals. Greek sports are both athletic and entertaining. Take the discus throw, for instance. It's always exciting to see how far the discus is thrown. Wrestling was quite popular. It was one of the most dangerous sports. Sports have always been an important part of life to the Greeks. The Olympics originated in Greece centuries ago. Greek Cruises and Greek Island Cruises
Greek cruises will take you to the historically rich Greek Islands and the surrounding Aegean Sea, revealing captivating natural beauty and astonishing architecture. Greek Island Cruises are cruises of passion, as you make your way through islands that hold the history of ancient civilizations. These civilizations of days gone by will captivate you with their ancient technology and building systems. And, Greek cruises not only reveal a country rich in history, but a country rich in culture and modern luxuries. Taking Greek cruises are cruises like no other on the planet.
Greek cruises have astounding and famous ports of call to visit and experience. Athens hosts the ruins of a culture that thrived in these islands 2,500 years ago. Propylaea is the home of several temples that were dedicated to the Greek gods. Bodrum will move those taking Greek cruises with its charm and tranquility. And, on Greek Island Cruises , and their interesting ports of call, you will find history plus all the conveniences that modern life has to offer. Restaurants, busy markets, and of course, museums can all be experienced during a Greek Island Cruise.
A most compelling aspect of most Greek cruises is of course, the ancient ruins. These historic ruins serve as historical markers of one of the greatest civilizations of all times. The historic Grecian culture had influence throughout the Mediterranean region, and guests aboard Greek Island Cruises will find themselves overwhelmed by the remains of a time, place, and culture that is hard imagine.

Leaving Paros
When you get to the dock you will see a big cage that looks like something they put cattle in. Each gate has a number and a chalkboard with the name and time of the departing boat written on it. Find your boat and go into the cage. When it is time to go they will open the cage at the other end and all the people will be herded to the correct ferry by the port policemen dressed in white. If you have any questions you can ask them. Leaving Paros, like leaving any island you become attached to is sad. You never know when you will return, or if you will have ever return. As the island recedes in the distance you think of the people you have met, the friends with whom you will hopefully remain in contact for the years to come. You think about the wild nights in the clubs, the wonderful meals, and maybe the romance that has made an unexpected return to your life. Unfortunately I was not in Paros long enough to develop any of these feelings. It was a jam-packed 36 hour crash course on an island that it would take a month on to make a really good website. I mean I learned a lot about the island and had some great fun with my friends, and it was certainly a place I will return to for a longer period of time, but my final thoughts upon leaving Paros had to do mostly with the fact that I had run out of film just as the ferry was leaving the harbor and there would be no dramatic fairwell picture to close this website.

Fresco from the Minoan Culture on Thera Circa 1700 BCE We are fortunate to have a moment frozen in time on the island of Santorini, which was covered by a volcanic eruption in approximately 1600 BCE. Ancient art frescoes illustrating the use of boats as part of the daily culture of the Greek Islands rival the art and iconography of Egypt in revealing the use of the boat in the Mycenaean civilization that occupied the ancient Greek islands and mainland. This ancient Greek art is an exact window in time into the 16th Century BCE. We can witness the culture of the ancient Greek Islands as if from a time machine. Like ancient Pompei several ancient Greek islands of the Agean were covered with volconic ash to create a time capsual that was only to be opened again in the twentieth century.

History
The island of Crete has been inhabited since prehistoric times. There is evidence of organized habitation which dates back to 8000 BCE, and the excavations of the 20th century have revealed a splendid civilization which ruled the island and much of the Aegean during the Bronze Age. The Minoan civilization, as it was named, is credited as the first civilization of Europe, it began around 2000 BCE and it lasted for about two millennia before it was replaced on the island by Mycenaean civilization circa 1375, and then by Classical and Hellenistic Greeks, which in turn were replaced by the Romans. The Byzantine empire and the Venetians controlled the island for a few hundred years before the Ottoman empire invaded the island.

Raise your travel dreams to their upright and locked positions. Join us now as we discover the ins and outs of Travels in Europe. Hi, I'm Rick Steves. For twenty summers I've traveled Europe with my travel writing and teaching in mind. Making lots of mistakes and taking careful notes, so you can learn from my mistakes rather than your own. In this series we're exploring the best of Europe. This time we're sailing the Aegean from Athens to the Greek Islands. We'll tour popular Santorini an island on the lip of a still active volcano, then get off the beaten path in lush and historic Samos. We'll find our own private island, a no name place with almost no tourism and a paradise beach. We'll follow locals to a Greek bed and breakfast, sample some great Greek food, and we'll learn the ferry system. It's by ship that people have island-hopped the Aegean for centuries. This overnight boat from Athens to Santorini offers tickets in several classes. Deck class is cheapest and can mean literally on the deck. For a few extra dollars an airplane-type seat can make life considerably more comfortable. And for even more comfort, try first class. Along with soft chairs and tables, you can be assured of some sleep in a stateroom. Our cabin has a window and a private shower. Cheaper cabins offer a shower down the hall. By the way, even passengers without a stateroom can go down to the cheap cabin deck and grab a free hot shower.
