Indo-European Hellenic Greek The Greek language (both ancient and modern) is a member of the Indo-European family of languages; its closest relatives are Armenian, Indo-Iranian, and Italic. The historical evolution of Greek reveals a unity paralleled only in Chinese, and the major changes can be charted in an unbroken literary tradition.
Ancient Greek was spoken in Greece, on Crete and Cyprus, in parts of the eastern Mediterranean and western and northern Anatolia, on Sicily and in southern Italy, on the northern Black Sea coast, and sporadically along the African coast and the French Riviera. Modern Greek is the language of about 9,340,000 people in Greece and the Greek islands and about 480,000 on Cyprus; it is also spoken in isolated villages of Turkey, Sicily, and southern Italy, and in many areas throughout the world to which Greeks have immigrated, notably Australia and North America.
History
Byzantine Greek is notable mainly for its heterogeneity. The koine remained the basis of the language of the early church and of the spoken tongue. Learned writers, however, adhered to an obsolete form of Attic, revived in the aftermath of the Roman conquest in opposition to the koine. Their archaizing Greek replaced Latin as the official language of the Byzantine Empire in the 6th century.

Introduction
Print Preview of Section Greek Language , language of the people of Greece, embracing the early, Attic, Hellenistic, Byzantine, and modern periods. It is the only member of the Greek subfamily of the Indo-European languages . The language spoken by the people of ancient Greece differs in several respects from the language spoken by present-day Greeks, which is known as Modern Greek. Both Ancient and Modern Greek employ the same alphabet, derived from that of the Phoenicians comprising 24 letters. II
Ancient Greek
Print Preview of Section The Greek language was in use for centuries before the era of recorded history. Prehistoric peoples who migrated from Central and northern Asia to the more fertile lands to the south settled in various sections of Greece, in each of which a distinct dialect arose; the four main dialects were Arcado-Cyprian, Doric, Aeolic, and Ionic.

My own students and others often ask me about materials available for the study of ancient Greek on the web. There are a lot of difficulties involved in studying Greek, whether in a classroom setting or on one's own. Unfortunately right now the web has not lived up to its potential to ease those difficulties. Nonetheless students now are much better off than they were a decade ago, and one can only imagine (hope?) that within the next few years we will see further progress. Already Unicode promises to ease many of the problems associated with displaying ancient Greek on the web, for example. Here are a few of the things that I myself have prepared for use by students. Below them you will find some selected resources from around the web that I think are particularly appropriate for students just beginning the study of ancient Greek. If you are thinking of trying to learn ancient Greek on your own, you might want to check out my standard response to people who want to learn ancient Greek on their own.

Introduction Greek is spoken by the 10 million inhabitants of Greece and some 82% of the population of Cyprus, numbering a further half million. It is also spoken around the world in the diaspora of Greeks who have emigrated for political or, far more commonly, economic reasons to the USA, Australia, Britain and elsewhere. In terms of number of native speakers it ranks well down the list of world languages. However, culturally its importance is disproportionate. As the language of classical Greek philosophy and literature and, later, as the language of the Christian Gospels and the early Church it has profoundly shaped Western thought. Like any other language Greek has evolved over the ages, but Modern Greek can justifiably trace its pedigree back through the Athens of Pericles to the Trojan wars and indeed to some of European man’s first attempts at recording his ideas in writing. This very history has been a deep influence on the way Greeks of today view their language and, incidentally, makes it very difficult to precis the history of Greek in the compass of a short essay such as this. Indeed this is a very personal selection of topics related to Greek, largely chosen as having a bearing on aspects of translation of Modern Greek. It is not intended to be a set of working notes for translators of Greek; that would be a far more ambitious project. It is more a brief historical background and a pot-pourri of aspects of the Greek language which we hope may be of interest to the non specialist who occasionally has to deal with Greek, whether in a translation agency, an in-house translation department or as a business person dealing with Greece. We have tried to ensure our facts are correct but we do admit to being guilty of oversimplification at times - unavoidable when dealing with so complex and diverse a subject in such a short space.

Somebody who only reads newspapers and at best books of contemporary authors looks to me like an extremely near-sighted person who scorns eyeglasses. He is completely dependent on the prejudices and fashions of his times, since he never gets to see or hear anything else. And what a person thinks on his own without being stimulated by the thoughts and experiences of other people is even in the best case rather paltry and monotonous. There are only a few enlightened people with a lucid mind and style and with good taste within a century. What has been preserved of their work belongs among the most precious possessions of mankind. We owe it to a few writers of antiquity (Plato, Aristotle, etc.) that the people in the Middle Ages could slowly extricate themselves from the superstitions and ignorance that had darkened life for more than half a millennium. Nothing is more needed to overcome the modernist's snobbishness. Albert Einstein 1954 (Einstein was very optimistic because he assumed that there are some who read newspapers or books) Isocrates Athenian orator, 380 BC.

Thus, long marks and the like are not indicated, and so cited forms should be used with caution. Language Name: Ancient Greek, Classical Greek, Greek (without reference to time period, the ancient form of the language is usually taken as the unmarked value, and within Ancient Greek, the Attic dialect (see below on Dialects ) is the usual point of reference); autonym: hellenike (actually an adjective derived from Hellen , the word for a 'Greek' in general (as opposed to a member of one of the Greek dialect groups; as an adjective, it is modifying an understood noun 'language'). Location: Family: Ancient Greek is generally taken to be the only representative (though note the existence of different dialects) of the Greek or Hellenic branch of Indo-European. There is some dispute as to whether Ancient Macedonian (the native language of Philip and Alexander), if it has any special affinity to Greek at all, is a dialect within Greek (see below) or a sibling language to all of the known Ancient Greek dialects. If the latter view is correct, then Macedonian and Greek would be the two subbranches of a group within Indo-European which could more properly be called Hellenic.

A.T Robertson The Ancient Greek Language "It is not speculation to speak of the ancient Greek language as a world speech, for the inscriptions in the ancient Greek language testify to its spread over Asia, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Sicily and the isles of the sea, not to mention the papyri. Marseilles was a great centre of Greek civilization, and even Cyrene, though not Carthage, was Grecized. The ancient Greek language was in such general use that the Roman Senate and imperial governors had the decrees translated into the world-language and scattered over the empire. It is significant that the Greek speech becomes one instead of many dialects at the very time that the Roman rule sweeps over the world. The world persisted after the division of the kingdom and penetrated all parts of the Roman world, even Rome itself. Paul wrote to the church at Rome in Greek, and Marcus Aurelius, the Roman Emperor, wrote his Meditations in Greek. It was the language not only of letters, but of commerce and every-day life... It was really an epoch in the world's history when the babel of tongues was hushed in the wonderful language of Greece."

Introduction
Studying the long-lasting history of a particular people, could be helpful for understanding the functions of historical procedures in general. The greeks are one of the few study-cases of unbroken consciousness through the ages. But what is greekness after all? I would describe it as the co-existance of three typically greek elements: to question everything - to adhere to nothing - to create something. Some of the three, are shared by many people regardless of nationality. But most mediterranean inhabitants tend to develop all three characteristics through the ages. Probably it has to do with the climate's and place's diverseness: it is harsh enough to toughen, but not too harsh to crush you. It is mild enough to invite hopefull experimenting, but not too mild to loosen your alertness. So, please, let me share with you the fascinating story of how a small people tried, inquired, excelled, sometimes failed and finally survived through times.

It is the language of one of the major civilizations of the world and of one of the greatest literatures of all time. Many modern scientific and technical words in English and other Western languages are derived from Greek, and it has been estimated that 12% of the English vocabulary is of Greek origin. Ancient Greek By the 16th cent. B.C. , Greek-speaking people were established in Greece, probably having come as invaders from the north. In antiquity there were a number of dialects of the Greek language, the most important of which were Aeolic, Arcadian, Attic, Cyprian, Doric, and Ionic. Ancient Greek was prevalent in the Balkan peninsula, the Greek islands, W Asia Minor, S Italy, and Sicily. Because of the political and cultural importance of Athens in the classical period of Greek history, the Athenian dialect, Attic, became dominant. From Attic there developed an idiom called the koinē, which means “common” or “common to all the people” and which became a standard form of Ancient Greek. After Alexander the Great the koinē developed into an international language that remained current in the central and E Mediterranean regions and in parts of Asia Minor and Africa for many centuries. Most of the New Testament was written in the koinē, which helped to gain a wide audience for Christianity. Byzantine Greek, based on the koinē, was the language of the Byzantine or East Roman Empire, which lasted from

    Origins
Main article Proto-Greek language There are several theories about the origins of the Greek language. One theory suggests that it originated with a migration of proto-Greek speakers into the Greek peninsula , which is dated to any period between 2500 BC and 1700 BC . Another theory maintains that the migration into Greece occurred at a pre-proto-Greek (late PIE ) stage, and the characteristic Greek sound-changes occurred later.
    Linear B
The first known script for writing Greek was the Linear B syllabary , used for the archaic Mycenaean dialect. Linear B was not deciphered until . After the fall of the Mycenaean civilization , there was a period of about five hundred years when writing was either not used, or nothing has survived to the present day. Since early classical times, Greek has been written in the Greek alphabet , said to be derived from Phoenician . This happened about the time of Homer , and there is one obscure, fleeting reference in Homer's poetry suggesting that he might have been aware of writing in Linear B.
