of Greece Background:
Greece has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era. In ancient times in Greece there have been three main civilizations, the Trojan civilization in Troy, the Cretan or Minoan civilization centered on Crete, and the Helladic or Mycenaean civilization of the Greek mainland. Greek's victory against the Persian invaders at the beginning of the 5th century strengthens Athens role as the leader of the Greek world and marks the beginning of an epoch that was called "The Golden Age of Pericles" in which Athens became the cradle of democracy itself. In the following Hellenistic Period Greek civilization has spread and Greek language became official in the eastern Mediterranean.
Followed by the Greco-Roman civilization and a long period of foreign occupation through Romans, French, Spanish and the Ottomans, Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1830.

Back to Greece Economy As the most internationalized subsector and one of the major industries of the Greek economy, tourism is a strong earner of foreign exchange. The warm climate, the long, scenic Mediterranean coastline, the many significant archaeological and historical sites, the traditional hospitality of Greeks, and improvements in the local infrastructure have increased the number of foreign travelers attracted to Greece. The tourist residence capacity has grown also. Between 1970 and 1990, the number of beds in tourist accommodations increased from 119,000 to 438,000. Of this residential capacity, 84 percent is located in hotels, of which Greece had 4,659 in 1992. However, the share of motels, furnished apartments, and guest houses has been increasing over the last decade. Tourist visits followed a moderate growth trend in the 1980s. In the last two decades, Greece's traditional competitors, Spain and Portugal, have been joined by Turkey and the other Balkan countries with beaches on the Adriatic and Black seas. Total nights spent by foreigners in Greece were 30.6 million in 1981 and rose to 34.5 million in 1989. Since the mid-1980s, tourist arrivals have generally fluctuated between 8 million and 9 million persons per year, but by 1994 this number exceeded 10 million. Despite long efforts by Greek governments to extend the tourist season throughout the year, Greek tourism remains concentrated in the summer months. In 1990-91, for example, three-quarters of tourist arrivals took place in the five-month period between May and September.

THE PLAKA
ATHENS' OLDEST SECTION BELOW THE ACROPOLIS
The Plaka was a carry over from an older an more sedate Athens, at one point they were going to tear it down as part of urban re-newal but came to their senses. Now its a tourist area and over priced. Adrianou (Hadrian) and Kidathineon Sts. are the two main drags of the Plaka. Hephestou St. is the beginning of the flea market open daily but busiest on Sundays. Recently there has been quite a bit of modernization, especially to store fronts, which make some of them resemble the mall back home. Not with standing its the place to go in Athens along with Anafiotika to get a feel for an older Athens. Also it Its loaded with tourist trinkets and knic-knacks from the kitch to some real bargains. Bargaining is the way to go. Even though I am half Greek, I still get treated like a tourist till I open my mouth and then I still get charged more. It's a sad fact, but true all over Greece:

For the purposes of clarity, information on Where to Go within Greece has been divided into mainland Greece, in the first part of the section (with five regional sections plus Athens), and the Greek islands, in the latter part of the section (with six island groups plus Crete). These do not necessarily reflect administrative boundaries.
Note: (a) Following an initiative by the Greek government, opening hours and fees for major museums and archaeological sites are now uniform throughout the country. Archaeological sites with adjoining museums charge a single admission fee, allowing entry to both at no extra cost. Visitors have access to these attractions Tues-Sun 0830-1500. (b) Tourist police in the main tourist destinations are trained to assist visitors with accommodation, maps, timetables, details of places to visit and special events. All wear flag badges denoting which language(s) they speak. English and German are fairly common. Do not hesitate to ask them for help.
Athens
International Athens Festival are held from June to September. The ruins of the civic, political and commercial center of the Ancient Agora can be visited, as can the reconstructed Hellenistic Stoa of Attalos, which houses the Agora Museum. Most artifacts are displayed in the National Archaeological Museum on Patission Street. The old quarter of the town, Plaka, which spreads around the Acropolis, is picturesque with its famed flea market, small tavernas, craft shops and narrow winding alleys. The excavations of the Library of Hadrian can be observed from Pandrossou Street. The center of modern Athens, most notably the chic area of Kolonaki, has many designer boutiques, smart restaurants and international-class hotels. The city has a thriving nightlife, with most bars and clubs staying open until at least 0300.

A beautiful and varied nature
with high mountains, lacework of coastline, blue and beguiling seas, thousands of islands, and a mild
and invigorating climate with a blazing sun and light, have enabled Man to make the first staggering steps
from the darkness of ignorance towards civilization. These elements together with an unknown factor, have helped Man/s spirit to give birth to human values; Philosophy, Art, Theater, Science, Democracy , have been born and perfected on this island. Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories with Greek-speaking populations. Following the defeat of communist rebels in 1949, Greece joined NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. Democratic elections in 1974 and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy; Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981

Athens, Greece tourism and central tourism
Athens Greece tourism: The marker place of Athens is a melting pot of people, colour, smells, noise, cosmopolitanism and fresh merchandise.
Athens’ local market is a melting pot of traders coming from the four corners of the world to sell their merchandise, to discuss prices or the weather. It is a meeting place of different nations, a crossroads of traditions. Its colourful and boisterous atmosphere ensures that no one leaves the place without feeling the warm sense of conviviality that only a Greek market can offer. The variety of merchandise on offer is wide. Various smells tickle the visitor’s nose as he walks along the central street. The streets are covered with leaves and dead flowers. The market is like a valley in spring. Green, yellow and red –the colours of nature- are those that dominate. As a visitor you will participate in this animated market with all your senses. The market life is buoyant and whoever happens to pass by feels alike. Colour, noise and people put a final touch to this picture of agricultural life. Merchants gather to sell their goods in the traditional way despite temperatures, which can reach 35 degrees C in the shade. Stalls are set up one next to the other and tents rise up to ensure that the sunrays do not damage the goods. Traders shout at the top of their voices, trying to sell their goods: fruits, vegetables, flowers, plants, clothes and pet animals. Customers, mostly women over 50, drive a hard bargain.
