HOME Asbury Park Press Aug 29, 2003 Russian Media Mogul Out on Bail in Greece By THEODORA TONGAS Associated Press Writer ATHENS, Greece (AP) A former Russian media tycoon was released on bail from a Greek maximum security facility Friday pending an extradition request from Moscow, where he is accused of fraud and money laundering in connection with a $262 million loan. Casually dressed in slacks and a T-shirt, Vladimir Gusinsky, who is still barred from leaving Greece, made no comment as he got into a car headed for a luxury hotel. Gusinsky, one of Russia's so-called oligarchs who once counted the independent NTV television station as part of his media empire, was arrested Aug. 21 at the Athens airport after arriving from Tel Aviv, Israel, reportedly for a family vacation. Airport officials found Gusinsky's name on an Interpol wanted list for fraud in excess of $250 million. A prosecutor ordered him held pending an extradition request from Russia. Moscow, however, so far has not filed such a request, according to Greek officials and Gusinsky's lawyers. The Russian Prosecutor General's Office said Tuesday that it was preparing one.

Situated in the far south of the Balkan peninsula, Greece combines the towering mountains of the mainland with over 1400 islands, the largest of which is Crete. OVERVIEW FACTS LEADERS MEDIA Post-World War II Greece has seen rapid economic and social change. Major contributors to the economy are tourism and shipping. Greece has long been at odds with its close neighbour, Turkey, over territorial disputes in the Aegean and the divided island of Cyprus. Relations warmed after both countries suffered earthquakes in 1999 and offered each other practical help. Although the disputes remain unresolved, the Greek government gives strong backing to Turkey's EU bid. It sees dividends to be gained from the increased regional stability that it believes membership would bring. Greece has been in dispute since the early 1990s with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Greece contends that the use of the name Macedonia by the neighbouring country implies a territorial claim over Greece's own region of the same name. The UN is involved in continuing mediation efforts.

building learning abilities - State Provision A multi-media training pack (guide/BBC video/website) for learners, parents and teachers Ellas Educational system The Hellenic education system consists of the kindergarten (1-2 years), the Primary (6 years), the Gymnasium (3 years), the Lykeion (3 years) and the Institutes of Higher Education (Universities 4-6 years and Educational Institutes of Technology, 3 years). The Universities run post-graduate courses leading to a specialist Degree (after 1–2 years of study) and the Ph.D. Education is compulsory from the age of 6 to the age of 15. At the end of the 9-year obligatory period, all students who wish to continue studying at the ‘Integrated Lykeion’ may follow the first-level course at a Technical Professional Training Centre and, on completion of this stage, follow the second-level course at the same centre. Successful completion of these studies gives students the right to take the Pan-Hellenic Examinations in order to gain entry to the Hellenic Educational Institutes of Technology (T.E.I). Special education for dyslexic students In accordance with a recently-introduced law relating to special education, special treatment is given to dyslexic students, with supportive training programmes in ‘special courses for integration’. The 33 artefacts are a step closer to returning to their rightful home following the handover by Federal Minister for the Arts, Peter McGauran. The Greek Government, in requesting their return, stated a number of the artefacts were stolen from Greek Museums and several pots bear identification markings for the Byzantine Museum. The works are conservatively valued at over $4 million and include icons, urns, jugs and bowls ranging from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. The artefacts were today handed over to the Secretary General of the Greek Ministry for Culture, Dr Lina Parlami, Curator of Athenian Antiquities, Dr Liana Parlami, and His Excellency Ioannis Beveratos, Ambassador of Greece to Australia.
