GREEK COSTUMES: Some Generalizations
The costumes of Greece are a beautiful part of a very rich cultural history. This is just a brief overview of the subject and will include only a few representative examples of some of the costumes that were worn traditionally by the Greek people. Some of the characteristics of Greek folk costumes can be traced back to elements in ancient Hellenic and Byzantine costumes. In fact, many of the elements of the liturgical clothing worn today by the Greek Orthodox priests are related to the modern Greek folk costumes and have their origin in the clothing of the Byzantine Empire.
Women's Costumes
One generalization about the Women's costumes concerns the main parts of their traditional dress. Most of the mainland costumes in particular feature a cotten chemise (poukamiso) as the basic garment. On the body, over the chemise, there is a sleeveless vest which is usually made of wool. These may be short or long. Sometimes they are of homespun wool, but in some areas they are made from finer factory woven wools. They are sometimes black, sometimes white. Sometimes in urban areas, they are made from velvet. Other important elements of the women's costumes are various types of aprons, sashes, and head coverings. The head coverings are usually large scarves of various materials and colors. They are often decorated with block printing or embroidery. Materials and colors often vary, as do the local names of all of these costume elements these parts:

Greek Weather The dominant condition of Greece's climate is the alternation between hot, dry summers and cold, damp winters typical of the Mediterranean. But considerable local variation results from elevation and distance from the sea. Generally, continental influences are felt farther north and in the center of the mainland. The main climatic regions of Greece are the mainland mountains, Attica (the southeasternmost part of the mainland) and the Aegean, the west including the Ionian Islands, and the continental northeast. In winter low-pressure systems reach Greece from the North Atlantic, bringing rain and moderating temperatures but also drawing cold winds from the eastern Balkans over Macedonia and Thrace as they pass into the Aegean Sea. The same low-pressure systems also draw warmer winds from the south, creating an average January temperature differential of 4° C between Thessaloniki (6° C) and Athens (10° C). Cyclonic depressions provide the lowlands of the west and the south with mild winters and little frost. Beginning in late fall and continuing through the winter, the Ionian Islands and the western mountains of the mainland receive abundant rain (snow at higher elevations) from the west, whereas the eastern mainland, shielded by the mountains, receives much less precipitation. Thus the average annual rainfall of Corfu off the west coast is 1,300 millimeters; that of Athens on the southeastern mainland is only 406 millimeters. In summer the influence of low-pressure systems is much less, allowing for hot, dry conditions and an average sea-level temperature of 27° C in July. Summer winds have a moderating effect along the coast, but very dry, hot winds have a parching effect that causes drought in the Aegean area. The Ionian and Aegean islands are especially warm in October and November. Elevation has an appreciable effect on temperature and precipitation at all latitudes, however. At higher elevations in the interior, some rainfall occurs year-round, and higher mountains in the southern Peloponnesus and on Crete are snowcapped for several months of the year. The mountains of Macedonia and Thrace have colder continental winters influenced by winds channeled through the river valleys from the north.

The Regions in Brief
Athens Central Greece Crete The Cyclades ... Western Greece Greece is a land of sea and mountains. Over a fifth of the Greek land mass is comprised of islands, numbering several thousand if you count every floating crag and nowhere in Greece will you find yourself more than 96km (60 miles) from the sea. It should come as no surprise that the sea molds the Greek imagination, as well as its history. Mainland Greece, meanwhile, is a great vertebrate, with the Pindos range reaching from north to south, and continuing, like a tail, through the Peloponnese. The highest of its peaks is Mount Olympus, the seat of the gods, nearly 3,000m (10,000 ft.) above sea level. Eighty percent of the Greek mainland is mountainous, which you will rapidly discover whether you make your way on foot or on wheels.

Volume 3 - Cameos of Greece by Graeme Dakin I have travelled to Greece many times for holidays in the last 20 years or so. I have visited a wide range of islands and mainland resorts and have never been disappointed. Friends and colleagues find this desire to return to the same country each year baffling and cannot understand why I have not been attracted to more exotic or fashionable destinations. Just what is it that draws me back like a magnet to Greece each year ? I recently spent a week on Crete in Almirida in the agricultural region of Apokoronas, close to Souda Bay, some 15 km east of Chania. This proved to be a wonderful holiday including so many small cameos which illustrate the charm (and frustrations) of Greece and its people and largely answer the above question. Chaos Works - Arriving at Chania along with several other flights to find a number of baggage carousels disgorging luggage but with no indication of which carousel related to which flight. This is not unusual but illustrates what appears to be Greece’s wholehearted devotion to their own version of ‘the chaos theory’. ... Shop ‘Til You Drop by Janet Ellis “Is that it? Only I can’t carry much more”, says Peter, who by now is carrying up to three bags in each hand, not to mention a full day-sac on his back.

This is the area round Athens and probably most cyclists will merely pass through it on their way to other regions. However, there is at least one impressive mountain area which is worth visiting; this is the Parnitha region north of Athens. (See my Greek pictures for a sample.) Mt Parnitha itself is at 1413m, but the actual summit is closed because of the radar station. However, there is a pass nearby which is at 1260 m. The approach through the outlying suburbs is dreary but once you start the climb traffic is light on weekdays and views are rewarding. The best way of going is via Varibobi (Varibombi) and Thrakomakedones; then there are numerous hairpins as the road goes up the mountainside. The gradient on the climb is about 8% most of the way. There is a hotel on top and a cafe but the general atmosphere is rural, and it is possible to make a pleasant circuit of the mountain top. Parnitha is part of a larger mountainous area and rough roads lead away down gorges from close to the summit. Another climb in the same mountain chain, a little to the west of Parnitha, goes via the village of Fili to Stefani and upwards to a quiet pass at about 500m. The road ends here despite what most maps say but it is possible to continue on roughstuff paths; eventually you reach quite reasonable unsurfaced roads and this affords an alternative route to Thebes cutting out some fairly dull country to the E. I have some
