This site is devoted to informing wine lovers, the wine trade and the wine media about the current revolution in the Greek wine industry (as well as the preservation of unique traditions that have evolved over thousands of years of continuous winemaking).
Sadly, during the 1960s, retsina came to dominate all associations with Greek wine. But retsina was only part of the story.
In ancient times, Greece played a crucial role in the development of the wine culture of Europe. Nearly two thousand years of foreign occupation took a toll on her fortunes, yet many of Greece's rich viticultural resources remain intact. During the last forty years the Greek wine industry has struggled to regain its name. Now, armed with an ocean of indigenous cultivars, a superior climate for grape growing, and an abundance of brainpower and technological resources, Greek wine now presents exciting newand ancientpossibilities for wine lovers around the world.
In the past two decades, Greece has undergone a revolution in which quality, individuality and history are the hallmarks of a new generation of Greek wine producers determined to make their mark abroad.

Back to Greece Geography The sea is the most consistent influence on the physical environment of Greece. The elaborately irregular Greek coastline, one of the longest in the world, includes about 15,000 kilometers of shore. No point on the mainland is farther than 100 kilometers from the water, and Greece includes more than 2,000 islandsof which about 170 are inhabited. Crete (Kriti), the largest of the islands, is the southernmost point of the nation with a significant population. The second major physical feature, mountains, cover more than three-quarters of Greece's surface area. Although their general pattern is from northeast to southwest, the mountains and the basins between them form irregular barriers to movement across the peninsula. In Greece's early history, the isolating effect of the mountains encouraged populations to develop lasting traditions of independence because of their lack of communication with the outside world. Beginning in ancient times, the sea endowed Greece with a seafaring tradition; the best-known work of classical Greek literature, Homer's

Introduction Greece is one of the few countries in the world where the folk dances are as alive today as they were in ancient times. Dance has always played an important role in the life of a Greek. It is an expression of human feelings and everyday life. The Greeks danced at religious festivals, ceremonies; they danced to ensure fertility; they danced to prepare for war and to celebrate victories; they danced at weddings; they danced to overcome depression and to cure physical illness. Almost every dance has a story to tell. Dance was regarded as one of the highest forms of art. Plato agreed with his mentor Socrates that every educated man should know how to dance gracefully by which he meant the manly exercises that kept the body strong and supple and ready to do its duty on the battlefield. The Pyrrhic, or weapon dance (a form of mock combat) taken from Crete and perfected in Sparta, was the ideal. The dance, of all the arts, is the one that most influences the soul. Dancing is divine in its nature and is the gift of the gods. Plato

Athens Berea Corinth Crete ... Vatican GREECE January 2004 Talbot Bible Lands Tour Itinerary and general information Common Koine Greek was widely spoken and with Pax Romana allowed for the spread of the Gospel easily over a vast area. Byzantium finally fell to the Turks in 1453, although the process of conquest was already well underway by the end of the 14th century. For the next 350 years, Greece was part of the Ottoman Empire. Many attempts were made to shake off the yoke of the Ottomans, such as the rising of 1770, which was supported by Catherine the Great. After a bitter War of Independence from 1821, a free state was declared in 1829.
The Acropolis* I had the wonderful privilege of traveling with the Talbot School of Theology to the Bible lands of Greece and Rome December 31, 2003 - January 22, 2004. Dr. Richard and Mrs. Donna Rigsby led the tour, Dr. Rigsby is a professor at Talbot and Golden Gate, then we were led on site by author, geographer, lecturer, and archeologist, Gordon Franz and several excellent tour guides, Caliope and Poppy.

Folk Instruments of the Greek Mainland
In each folkloric area of Greece the musicians play different folk instruments. Some instruments are found in many areas, while some are only found in a few regions. The typical folk orchestra of the mainland includes the klarino (Greek Albert system clarinet), the violi (violin), the lavouto (Greek lute), the defi (Greek hand drum like the tambourine), and sometimes the sandouri (a Greek hammered dulcimer). The typical island folk orchestra usually includes the violi and the lavouto, and sometimes the santouri. In Thrace and some of the Aegean islands they often include the toumbeleki, a hand drum.
In traditional Greek folk music the musicians do not play harmony but instead use heterophony. Each musician plays the melody in a different way (improvising decorations and embellishments). Sometimes at the end of a song, the lead musician will play improvisations (taximia) in the mode of the song, and this excites the dancers to new heights.
