Geography, both cultural and physical, is extremely important for understanding the ancient world. However, many students are uncomfortable with it. We plan to make available a set of maps particularly tailored to the collections in the museum, which will complement the other on-line materials in this resource.

105. Index
Details sights seen in an eightday trip through greece. Also provides commentary on a short stop-over in London.

WELCOME TO MY GREECE (AND LONDON) TRIP This travelogue details the sights that I saw during my stay in Greece from February 5 to February 13, 2001. It will also detail my quick stop in London on February 14, 2001. Long time readers will notice this trip was different from my previous trips. First off, I didn’t wait a year to let my fear of flying subside before I jumped on a plane. Second, it was the furthest distance I’ve ever traveled. Also, it was the first long distance trip that I had taken without the companionship of my long time travel partner, Tom Marihart. Finally, it was the first trip to someplace where I didn’t have an understanding of the language. So, what would cause me to make such a dramatic departure from my travel routine? Only something life changing like getting a new travel partner through marriage would make me deviate from my established routine. That’s exactly what happened. Dianne and I exchanged our vows on February 3, 2001. In order to relax after the hustle and bustle of wedding preparations/ceremony, we headed off to a place where we could REALLY get away from everyone and everything. Why Greece? Well, we both wanted to go to Europe for the honeymoon. When we looked over the countries that were options, we found that neither of us had been to Greece. That made the decision easy. Once we had decided on Greece, I told her “If we’re going to visit the Parthenon, we should see the best pieces of it in the British Museum in London.” That led to the stopover in London on Valentine’s Day. It also allowed us to indulge in a romantic evening at the theatre. But, I’m getting ahead of myself.

    112. Our Trip To Greece & Turkey
Two friends share memories and pictures of greece and Turkey.
    http://www.geocities.com/gaelenmag/
May-June 2001 Here's where we went on our trip... we spent two nights in Athens, then followed the route below (clockwise) around the Peloponnese penninsula for 8 days. Athens is just off this map to the right. From Athens we flew to Istanbul for three more nights. We went home from there. This is only a fraction of the 10 rolls of film I shot, but below are some of the highlights. And yes, I did learn Greek and some Turkish for the trip. Here's why. -GG The Parthenon- Athens. Unfortunately everything is roped off so you can't walk inside it anymore. Also note the extensive scaffolding due to reconstruction work. Typical back alley in Greece... huge bougenvillas grow everywhere, and everyone eats outside in the warm weather. Small port city of Ermioni on the Argolid Penninsula, from where we hopped to... ..the very cute island of Hydra, where no cars are allowed. Feels a lot like Catalina. Here we are enjoying Mythos, the national beer. The famous Lion's Gate in ancient Mycenae.

Greek History Although Temple University's Intellectual Heritage 51 is not a course in Greek History, it certainly helps to know a little about it - certainly about the events of the century leading up to the Golden Age of Athens, described so aptly by Pericles in his Funeral Oration (also see Dr. J's Illustrated Pericles' Funeral Oration). Greece is unique among classical cultures because the curious intersection of myth, literary genius, history and reality is reflected in the material culture they left behind. In other words, today in 1999 you can actually stand in the King's megaron at Mycenae and imagine you hear Clytemnestra's screams (Aeschylus' Oresteia ); you can see an excavated bathtub at Pylos, in the very palace that Homer told us Telemachos was bathed!
